Amazing song! Good call, Stephanie. It was a staple at our high-school dances. Kids loved it cause it was a banger but we could still dance close. Lol.

This song has been a regular Friday morning radio song for decades. Often stations would mix in movie and cartoon sound bites to customize this song. Like they would drop a Fred Flintstone Yabba Dabba Doo in there and movie quotes about hating work. Its an awesome song.

    • @sixstanger00
      @sixstanger00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

My local radio station would usually play it at 5 PM on Fridays, but would mix in sound bites.
At the top of the hour, the DJ would say, "It's 5 o'clock, and guess what day it is?" Then, a sound bite of several people saying "It's FRIIIDDDAYYY!!!" would kick off the song playing.

I'm another one who would fall into that "Georgia" category that Beth commented on in this reply thread! Although I'm originally from, & am back in the Piedment of NC now, I went to college in Columbus, GA. in the mid '80s. I haven't thought of these call letters in a long time, but yes Beth, both major Columbus radio stations, 102.9 KISS FM & 107.3 WCGQ, played this along with a Mashup of several other songs & movie/TV/cartoon clips including Weekend by Wet Willie & Shout by Otis Day and the Kinghts every Friday at 17:00. The memories this brings back!

Jay and Amber, these guys were definitely big in the 80’s and when MTV actually played music videos. Other songs to check out by them are “Hot Girls in Love” and “Lovin’ Every Minute of It”. They also had a number of ballads that I know Amber would probably love with “Heaven in Your Eyes” being their most popular.

As the drummer in a bar band for over 35 yrs, I always loved playing this song. It's uptempo, catchy and OF COURSE, the crescendo drum fill (even though my kit was not as big as Matt's) was MY TIME to shine!! Any excuse to let loose.

Loverboy was one of my favorite bands of the 80's. I really miss the 80"s... A lot of the music back in the day just had this feel good quality. I miss that sense of joy, the "let's just have some fun" quality of the music in the 80's. I also miss the real talent that the performers had. Now, with auto tune and studio musicians, you can have zero talent and still have a band or be a music star. It's crap. Which is why people are blown away by real talent. They're not used to seeing it.

Came out in the early 80"s. This song was written by the guitarist Paul Dean, but his version was "Waiting For The Weekend". When he brought it to the band, Mike Reno, the singer, was the one who said they HAD to change Waiting to Working, and 40+ years later, it's still one of the most played songs at 5pm on Friday afternoons.

That headband, LOL! He started wearing it to keep sweat out of his eyes (apparently the lights got _really_ hot), and it became a bona fide fashion trend in some circles. I saw a reunion show LB did a while back, and on stage he paused and made a big production of putting on a headband before striking a pose. Must have been reading the room right, because everyone was laughing so hard they had to play an opening bridge to give people time to calm down enough to hear the song. Awesome energy.

Lovin' Every Minute of It is a good one to do next.

I have this on original vinyl LP and saw them in concert outdoors at Poplar Creek Music Theater in Hoffman Estates, IL back in '86. This song had everyone from the seats all the way up into the lawn seats jumping and dancing! Another neat thing was new band opener, Quiet Riot, made their debut tour and were great too!

Do the entire album, it's a keeper all the way thru!
Also do Carole King's Tapestry album. Released in 1971, Carole King's Tapestry was one of the most influential albums of its era, topping the chart 15 weeks in a row. She wrote and sang many songs with her husband during the sixties. Listen and enjoy music with meaning!

One of the best songs to crank up on Fridays! Glad you finally got back to Loverboy (who are Canadian, continuing your theme from Canada Day yesterday ;) ). They had some true bangers in the 80s, and this was definitely one of them. You can also check out "The Kid Is Hot Tonite", "Queen of the Broken Hearts" and "Hot Girls in Love". Or, if you want a great power ballad (Amber, I'm looking at you), try "When It's Over". If you guys have "Footloose" on your movie list, you may notice that there's a song called "Almost Paradise", where Loverboy's lead singer Mike Reno duetted with Ann Wilson (from Heart). Loverboy also had a song "Heaven In Your Eyes" that was on the Top Gun soundtrack. I would also like to recommend The Tubes "She's a Beauty", as it's been a while since you've reacted to them.

Another classic from another great Canadian band. Check out the Tragically Hip. They have a boat load of good music. New Orleans is Sinking, 50 Mission Cap, Wheat Kings(about a native gentleman convicted for rape and murder and later found innocent 25 years later) Blow at High Dough, Grace Too. Ahead by a century and more. Their final concert, viewed by 11.7 million people came about after the lead singer was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Mike Reno can turn out an amazing power ballad as well. Check out This Could be the Night - or Almost Paradise (duet with Anne Wilson from Heart) - from the Footloose movie. ETA - I forget about Heaven in You Eyes (from Top Gun) and When It's Over.

If you want to hear Mike Reno's (lead singer) softer side, check out his duet with Anne Wilson of Heart, "Almost Paradise", from the soundtrack of "Top Gun".

This song I fell in love with while a teen, entering high school, it's the "national anthem for every working person", since everyone is working for the weekend...the started in Canada in late 70, then hit mainstream on MTV in the 80's.....Matt Frenette is the drummer

You should check out another Canadian band (Loverboy is Canadian) doing a song that also has a working for the weekend vibe. The band is called The Kings and the song is called This Beat Goes On/Switchin To Glide. You might get a shout out by the band members if you react to them, because they messaged me a couple years ago when I commented that i remembered a radio station in Cleveland playing their song every Friday at 5pm. Matter of fact my icon is that radio station's old logo!

I was in a lot of bands growing up and this was one song I always loved playing live. Crowd loved it! Has that synth 80s sound. Our lead singer nailed this on too. As much fun as it is listening to it was just as fun playing it and the crowd reaction. Our city has a Heritage Days every year and they had John Waite and Loverboy as the two bands that year and they both looked good and absolutely played their songs perfect. Hasn't lost a beat. Another great Canadian band. Peace, Love, Courage from David in Detroit.

Growing up in the lower Florida Keys I got my first job at a little mom and pop store/butcher shop and one of my jobs was cleaning up the meat room at the end of every day (l loved it) and the local radio station at 530 pm on fridays would play “The Weekend Song” and working for the weekend was it! I had a boom box in there and I would crank it up and jam while I’m spraying down the room!!.. good memories and this always takes me back to those great times in the 80’s
