There's a great book about Oldsmobiles racing and performance efforts and one small section they talk about this car. It actually had a 455 that was stroked and bored to over 500 cubic inches, and the fwd transaxle was changed around so the final drive was above 4.80, I forget the exact numbers but this car was apparently an absolute monster. The boom is called "racing to the past Oldsmobile and it's demise" by D. Dale smith, I highly recommend it. It's a short but very informative read
Glad you posted this, nice bit of racing history! 66 Olds Toronado 425 CI engine, 10.5:1 comp ratio, all forged internals Factory(civilian) rated at 385HP(gross) Front wheel drive. Driven with a chain drive. I imagine the version in the hill climb cars was tweaked from the factory, open exhaust probably a cam and more/better fuel and timing. Otherwise it is important to note that the car is an actual factory car, back when people raced cars available to the public and it meant something and was a lot more fun(IMO) to both do and watch.
It was hugely tweaked! It had a one off big block that was over 500 cubic inches, and the final drive ratio was modified to a ratio somewhere above 4.80. It was a monster of a car. There's a short portion about it in the book "racing to the past, Oldsmobile and it's demise" by D. Dale smith who was in charge of the "skunk works" of Oldsmobile for years
@Pete shea I wasn't going to respond to this at first but I decided to. You are probably close to the factory spec HP number, given the 385 was gross, meaning no accesories on the engine(water pump, fan, alternator, etc) no exhaust, no transmission etc. Adding all of those things, and then having the transmission hooked to a transfer case instead of the driveshaft, and the transfer case hooked to a giant chain drive.... yeah, 220 is probably a good guess to the wheels. As for forged vs non.... I am just going to guess you have never seen them side by side because that part of your comment is just silly.

Have a 1970 toronado 455 (non GT) also forged internals?

That was done when it was dirt like to see how much faster it would do today
Ehhh.... what would REALLY be impressive is showing it flying down the Peak & coming to a stop with those drum brakes....
