This is why you will be around long after the retro handheld hype tempers down over the next two years. You talk about things that actually concern gaming and having fun- not just about what custom firmware is so much better than stock, or thumb sticks. So happy to see more backpacking content! As soon as I touched the Miyoo A30 I knew it was going into my pack for my Yosemite hike last month. Featherweight and worth it for 30 minutes of wind down at night. You always need a luxury item or two!
Thanks for saying so. I agree, the devices and software is only a part of the fun, the other half is the games and the good times we can have with them.
It would be nice if you'd show people how to setup a survival backpack. Like: Don't buy toilet paper but canned food etc. How to setup your phone for the battery to last as long as it can, good powerbank, the last handheld you would take with you, all tech youd consider taking with you. You get the idea. I think people should know things like that. Maybe its a little too dark for a TD video but I'm sure you can make it fun.❤
We dont do ultra light camping, but my wife and I took our two kids (5 & 3) camping, twice this summer and it was a blast. Packing everything for the family filled our trunk but we have an air mattress and two dogs to fit in. I brought my steam deck, my wife had her laptop. We set up first, go on a walk with the kids to get energy out, set up our fire space, cook dinner over the fire, chicken kabobs and hot dogs. The kids watched the iron giant in the tent before bed, me and my wife had a couple drinks by the fire and listened to the music. Then in the morning before we left and had to pack up, i played jax and daxter on my steam deck by the lake and my wife played Wingspan on her laptop while we had a coffee. It was a ton of fun. Anyhow, more gaming & camping videos please!
Hey, so cool to see someone who's into hiking and gaming! On my previous backpacking trips I wasnt really gaming, but on the next trips I plan to take the RG28xx (I'm ways less ultralight than you, around 10lbs BW). Keep the videos coming. I'd interested to know your 3 seasons and winter setups.
LOL I am a park ranger and am literally sitting on the side of a trail, all decked out in my trail trimming gear, covered in sweat, and checking my phone like a loser when this video pops up. Love this vibe for you tech dweeb, maybe I ought to return to my roots and go back to playing my gameboy in the woods like I did as a kid! Funny how nature and video games can go together as forms of escapism. I’m pretty sure that learning how to memorize and categorize the first 150 Pokémon trained my brain into how to study zoology in college later on, and even helped me in my early zookeeping career! They even used to call me “snake boy”, now it’s “snake man”, lol.
Oh man I have been waiting for this since the V90 camping vid. I love ultralight! Great video, TD. We've started camping with our girls, and while most of our activities are as a family, I'm hoping to start backpacking with my oldest daughter and this is a great idea for camp relaxing.
It's amazing seeing someone talk in one video about two of my favorite things, camping and video games ❤ I like tent camping, and I'll bring my Switch because I can leave the screen in the mesh above my head, and play the joy cons while lying on my sleeping bag playing Ace Attorney. It's such a good way to wind down for the night, and so relaxing 😌
Great to hear I'm not the only mad man!! I've got into retro handhelds by looking for a console to bring to my mountaineering overnight trips. Since I normally go out in winter, nights are long and there is plenty of time to spend so I carry my RG280V most of the time, it also lets me listen to music without burning my phone battery (which I need for gps and communication). I was a Scout in my youth and in high school I started to bring my DS on camping to kill the extra time during the night, when I started mountaineering I got the idea to do the same trick again but eventually I run out of DS games. Most of the time i just bivouac so my setup is just a a silicon kettle, petrol stove (it will keep melting snow even below freezing), a down sleeping bag and an inflatable mat, besides all the metal equipment for the summit (that's why I want to cut as much weight as posible in my camping gear) instead of a water bottle I bring a thermos and make sure to drink a lot water in the camp before leaving. The handheld and the yerba mate are those quality of life items that allows me to enjoy even more the trips although they make "unnecesary weight", but playing Zelda in the night and drinking mate in the summit are the best rewards after some exhausting walks/climbs. I'll be glad to see another nature + gaming video.
Sounds like a nice setup! Great point about the phone battery. I've had lots of comments about 'just use your phone', but using your phone juice for retro games isn't thinking light! I'm planning on doing a winter ultralight video this year too. Stay tuned for that :D
All I can say is that what you're doing is unique and very creative. While I am not a nature boy, I am entertained by your camping style. I would like to see videos of the equipment you bring with you, etc.
I build trails for a living and really enjoyed you putting content out like this because i can relate to this. I do play with retro game systems while I'm out and about . I also invite others to play as well. Keep up the great work
More camping videos, please! I love the nature visuals and the supplies interest me. I know nothing about camping, so anything you show would be interesting to me. That is very useful information lol. Well, at least it's "engagement" - Thanks for the cool video TechDweeb!
Really enjoyed this. I was big into camping back in the seventies and eighties. Now I'm 58, but still have adventures ahead of me. This really inspires me to try the ultralight approach. Thanks.
This is like the exact opposite Tech Dweeb we saw a couple weeks ago when his mom went on vacation and he didn't know how to survive on his own. Today's Tech Dweeb could survive even the most apocalyptic beaver attack!
Hi Dweebie, you have plenty of friends. All your subscribers and your pals of the round table, we consider you one of our best friends, and you can count on us. 😄
Hey, love the camping video! I hike and camp a few times a year, though I lack the dedication of you ultralight folks. I do bring a handheld, sometimes, usually a Miyoo A30, these days. Small and light enough for me.
I love the FunKey S! I have one in atomic purple. It blows my mind how something so lightweight and so small outperforms the 150 pound Tandy 1000 with the 286 processor I played around with back in the day.
I've put 80+ hours into Digimon Wolrd 3 on the Playstation on mine 😁 and I'm a large man at 6'4" tall! I am happy to see someone give it some love, I got it back when it was still just a kickstarter concept! I even bought an extra as a backup worried I'd lose the original, but thankfully I still have that on reserve. I also love to backpack, but I don't know what it's like to do so with any less than 80-100 pounds on my back 😅! Either way, ever since the first time I was old enough to pack my own stuff for a backpacking trip, I have always either brought my GameBoy Advance, SP, Micro, DS, and 3DS with me. Nowadays, I always bring the Funkey S and either the Miyoo Mini Plus, Trimui Smart Pro, or the PowKiddy RGB30 with me into the wild, and I leave the Nintendo systems at home away from the dirt and moisture. I also play MTG...do you also disc golf?!
OMG! Young lad, you have great taste in little critters! I've three Funkey S critters to keep my three little Miyoo Mini handhelds company. Awesome!!!!!!
Your hiking setup is super impressive and interesting. I'd totally be up for more videos about it. The fact that you still retro game when you're exploring the great outdoors is super cool.
Absolutely loved this video! The retro vibe is so captivating, and the way you immerse yourself in outdoor activities really resonates with me. Your descriptions bring everything to life, and it's truly inspiring to see how passionately you share all these nostalgic elements with us. Your enthusiasm for the great outdoors is infectious! Since I live in Canada, where we experience almost six months of winter, I'm really curious about your gear for the colder months. Could you possibly share what's in your winter backpack in a future video? I’m sure it would be just as fascinating and helpful. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
I haven't done ultralight, but I went camping this summer and brought a journal, my phone for reading, and my Miyoo mini +. The phone and miyoo use the same charge cable and the batteries are good on both, so I didn't need to charge both at once. And yeah, enjoying nature is part of the point of camping, but it was nice to have some quiet time after hiking, playing in the water, and playing card games with everyone. I'd be happy to see more outdoor + gaming videos
You should collab with Quiet Nerd! His camping videos are similar to this but he builds huge contraptions to camp on like personal boats, ATV's, . I think he has one video of camping with steam deck
I take my miyoo mini plus when I’m base camping. I just got the powkiddy RGB30 but I feel like that’s the perfect handheld for laying around the house. Plus the great thing about the miyoo mini plus is onion os. That way if a bear comes I don’t have to worry about my save states! Would love to see more about your backpack and hiking shoes of choice.
I do not travel anywhere without my Miyoo Mini Plus, my iPad, and my Kobo! These camping videos inspired me to return to travel vlogging. However I left my FunKeyS in Calgary :( 6:32 whoaaaa you play MTG too?!
I have an ultralight setup myself, which I've never used. Are mosquitos not an issue in the Frozen North? Because they would carry you away down here in Orlando without a bug net or soaking yourself in repellent. Actually had one bite through the shell of my tent!
I like wild camping and retro games so more camping videos please :-) I have taken my Gameboy micro on a few trips :-) I will consider this new device now....would be interesting to see what kind of setup you have for winter and autumn camping...see ya :-)
Idk why I’m up this early. But I guess destiny had me here, now, at this place and time, to be here for this video release while it comes out. What a magical time to be alive.
I do backcountry camping (canoe) in Algonquin provincial park often. While I'm not as weight restricted as you are, I still try too keep my gear light due to the many portages I do! I bring my powkiddyy v90, its pretty light and it's a useable size. Also because it's a clamshell it protects itself when closed and it's bumping around in my backpack and if I does get damaged well it's really cheap too and easy to replace.
We went to a semi modern campground with our 6 and 9 year olds this summer. It was…not fun. The “out house” odor was present at our site probably 25 yards away. It would choke you inside with the door closed. Long story short, I don’t think we are going to a site without a proper bathroom/showers at the least. No idea how you can hike that long and not be desperate for a shower by the second day. My wife thought I was a bit of a baby 😂 I did bring my Odin 2 and got to play a little bit. My wife grew up trailer camping and playing card games so we played a number of card games, too.
In the summer this is quite cozy. In the fall too, as long as it stays above about 5°c. Otherwise I bring my quilt. I'm hoping to get a winter camp video out this year and I'll show off that stuff.
Looking forward to the camping stuff in the future! Please give us also some hints of we want to go camping with kids (6yo). What interesting / awesome thinks they can see and learn there?
If I was to do light backpacking, I would use a modified Game & Watch. They are extremely light at 68g, have a good screen and great controls. They can last up to 6-8 hours on a single charge depending on what you emulate. The only downside is modifying them which involves soldering a very tiny chip and connecting a probe to reprogram them. But even unmoded, the built in games are great for passing some time.
Very inspiring. I’ve been wanting to do something similar for a while. Having ADHD means that a small dopamine creator in the pocket will always be a thing for me regardless of where I am
Ohh i love tiny gadgets!!!!❤❤ ;u; there are no words how much i love the stuff you showed here, that rain poncho?? That sitting pad??? The cute battery charger????? Huoooooo im gonna dieee😍🔥🔥
After seeing this video, I went back and watched the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film. Now one of my eyebrows is raised and it won't come back down. Hmmmmm......
Cool. I always brought my Gameboy camping as a kid. It's the drive there and back that you really need some distraction, but the nights can also be kinda dull. There's nothing wrong with hitting a little Dr. Mario before you go to sleep.
I got a Nano after your camping video last year. I ended up using it way more than I thought (seriously, thank you for the idea) but ultimately decided I wanted a slightly larger screen. I ended up getting a GKD Pixel and it now lives in my messenger bag or backpack when hiking. The Nano now lives in the car, quick at hand if I'm out somewhere where I might have to wait a bit (restaurant, doctor's office, etc) and, by some odd twist of fate, I don't have my ever-present messenger bag. I do (day) hiking mostly, with some camping. I want to do more of the latter and am currently trying to decide on a water filtration setup. Not quite ultra-light just yet. I think most people tend to start out with too much gear and, over time, weed out the unused & poor choices, and get down to just the essentials. I'm slowly getting there. The extra weight of the Pixel is a compromise I'm happy to make. I also sometimes toss in my (Kobo) e-reader.
Ultralight for the win! Yeah, my back won’t let me haul what I could during my scoutmaster days either. Less is more. I saw this Emily blunt Western recently where she learned the hard lesson “The difference between what you need and what you want is what you can take on a horse.”
1. How long do you stay out for? 2. Do you bring anything to slow charge devices or is that too much added weight? Definitely not my thing, but fun video to see how you do it!
Oh nice, thanks for the suggestion. I run trail long distance and bag peaks with a running vest or custom fastpack. Base weight anywhere between 5-9 pounds depending on season and activity. I like mellowing out before sleep with a saved podcast or video and have wanted to game but don’t want to carry my original GameBoy Micro and cartridges. This mini handheld looks right up my alley, thanks again 🙌
As some used to say about blades in a gun fight, "never bring handhelds and tech toys to a nature quality time"... but if you'll do, don't be so modest: A PS5 with a 70" display and a full power generator running with about 8m³ of smoky fuel should be light enough for half an evening in the wild - and works as a portable heater too! But be assured that gaming in the outside really shouldn't be advised; Friday 13th's Jason, Predator, Werewolves, Godzilla, Yoggi Bear, ants, door to door sellers and all this kind of deadly manaces already are dangerous enough for the people that go camping and keep it's eyes and ears attentive to any falling leaf in the sorroundings. Things could be yet more dangerous with 7.1 HiFi surround sound and bright and high paced videogames distracting the campists.
I just picked up the miyoo mini plus and was blown away how small it is. The mini has to be tiny so that flipzizzle Jr has to be insanely small. I'm taking my miyoo anywhere I go but that flip is still very cool to have
This is cool. My future plan is to build a medium-sized bike-camper (basically a casket on wheels) with solar so I can take LONG trips and go to the beach in the efternoon, take a swim, game (without running out of juice) and fall asleep to the sound of ocean waves and then take a morning dip the next day before going home (normally ONLY go in the afternoon). Would not go for a handheld as small as this but I do like a camping/gaming video. 3/4 of the year (and sometimes the last 4th as well) here is CRAP so would like to get out more in the better months. Don't have any pointers but cool upload. 👍
Hi TD, thank you for making more camping content ☝️. I usually like to pack ultra heavy and cook gourmet meals in the woods. My gameboy color with a worm light was my retro handheld of choice. Hopefully I can win one of giveaways in the near future. Love from California brother 💪
This is the video which got me to subscribe. I was just as interested in checking out your Dutchware Gear sitpad and Mountain Laurel Designs pack and stuffs, as I was the FunKey S. Never thought I'd see a video which scratched both my guilty pleasures. Well done! Much respect.
I bought my FunKey for the novelty, but it really grew to be a favorite of mine. I've always felt it would be weird to take video games on a backpacking trip, but you've inspired me to give it a go. I would love to see a full gear deep dive video and/or a travelogue from a trip highlighting the real world sights alongside progress through a game.

You are truly hard core extra lite. At bare minimum I need a sleeping bag and quilt.
In the summer this is quite cozy. In the fall too, as long as it stays above about 5°c. Otherwise I bring my quilt. I'm hoping to get a winter camp video out this year and I'll show off that stuff.
@@TechDweebdude... You're tough. Looking forward to the winter camping video.
Taking my PSP camping baxk in the day was awesome. I looked forward to sitting by the fire until 3 am playing games ...so freaking relaxing.
TechDweeb: International Man of Adventure.
Next time I stay out in the mountains for a week I’m bringing my flipzizzle 💯
Very inspiring. I’ve been wanting to do something similar for a while. Having ADHD means that a small dopamine creator in the pocket will always be a thing for me regardless of where I am
Well said
TechDweeb thank you for this alternative viewpoint. BMO is for sure essential to the ultralight kit.
I'd be interested in seeing more of your ultralight setup. Awesome video man.
Ohh i love tiny gadgets!!!!❤❤ ;u; there are no words how much i love the stuff you showed here, that rain poncho?? That sitting pad??? The cute battery charger????? Huoooooo im gonna dieee😍🔥🔥
i need more of this as im in the same boat nerdy and outdoorsy
After seeing this video, I went back and watched the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film. Now one of my eyebrows is raised and it won't come back down. Hmmmmm......
Great video! More of this content pleaaase
Chefs kiss to the hounds tooth scarf
I would totally watch NatureDweeb or CampingDweeb videos.
Hell yeah you're ultralight for sure NatureDweeb. The rg280v is as small as my eyes and hands will allow. How was the hike?
I love backpacking, this is a great video, thanks for sharing your stuff
Cool. I always brought my Gameboy camping as a kid. It's the drive there and back that you really need some distraction, but the nights can also be kinda dull. There's nothing wrong with hitting a little Dr. Mario before you go to sleep.
Absolutely love this, please keep em coming!
I go camping all the time with the Scouts. I bring a small handheld for exactly the same reasons you do. Every trip.
This was a cool video. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Love the camping videos, and good morning.
1. How long do you stay out for? 2. Do you bring anything to slow charge devices or is that too much added weight?
Definitely not my thing, but fun video to see how you do it!
Nice video. I would watch more nature/video game style video. Could be like 4x4 camping videos.
This was a really interesting use case to learn about! I'm pretty sure that thing would murder my eyes though, haha
Was waiting for the next outdoor/camping video! 😊
My OG Miyoo Mini is my choice for long distance hiking. I always thought, I was the only person 🤣
Love this camping gaming video. Awesome video dude
I love it when my weird, niche interests overlap!
I would like to see your winter setup in the future.
Yeah, finaly! Thank you! :D
YES. Been waiting for more campin'n'gamin' videos.
