A lot of luxury brands are just living off the reputation they built on their illustrious past.
I agree, I bought my 2011 and purchased the extended warranty, and as soon as that expired, I started having problems. It’s not just the quality of the car that’s living off the past, but it’s also the customer service. I had a recall issue so I took my vehicle in to fix it. Mercedes refused saying that the recall was finished and my 2011 was didn’t qualify because the recall only went up to 2010...supposedly, the issue that I had didn’t exist anymore🤪🤪🤪
Sometimes those brands are built on reliability that's solid (Toyota, Honda, etc) and sometimes not so much (almost everything else - Tesla, BMW, GM, etc)

I have family in Austria, and several years ago they had the thing for BMW, my uncle had one, my aunt had one, and my cousin had one. Let's just say you won't find a BMW in their driveway any more lol, heck if you mention BMW, my uncle's blood pressure starts going up 😂

I owned 2, and now i own toyota. I have to say, that are much better cars that scotty is trying to portray. Extremely fun to drive, lightest in the class, rwd, perfect car enthusiast guy car. Not the best car if you need something from a to b.
BMWs are overbuilt for a reason, to keep you coming back to the dealer for service and repairs. Some cars and trucks cost so much money in repair and replacement costs, you wind up paying twice for them.
Why is BMW still in business? Who keeps buying those expensive lemons? The wealthy secret lizard people?
If I were in the market for a high-end luxury vehicle, I'd look at Lexus and Acura. I wouldn't even consider anything else.

No not the Lexus shop. I’ll pass. I’ll go to the Porsche, Volvo , Cadillac ( Lyriq) , Acura, Genesis before I go to Lexus. What vehicle would u get? ES is Camry, IS is outdated as is the RX and GX, NX gets out featured and engined by its RAV4 Prime and Venza family, maybe a new LX, LS, LC? Just don’t see it. I understand the prestige they built thru marketing but I rather save a few dollars and get a Toyota with more tech and better hybrid

@@rahimi4762 The highest trim Camry is not a bad pick but certainly not what someone who buys a $150 grand Mercedes would buy and that's actually pretty sad because that Toyota would be stylish and reliable and comfortable.
The entire Lexus line might be very well made but a blind crack addict is designing the front ends of all their cars.
And every year Lexus SUV's have gotten progressively more hideous.
I also checked Acura and they no longer sell a large luxury model,they are mostly sport models.
Everyone sells a SUV ,but a SUV is not a four door luxury car.
The Genesis line has built itself into a very odd time in the car market.They do sell relatively stylish sedan cars at great relative prices.But they do not have the social standing of a Mercedes,BMW or Porsche.
BMW's 8 series is more like a sports sedan then a luxury car.
The same can be said of the Cadillac CT5 Blackwing sedan.
I had not realized that the luxury sedan market had so completely given up on sedans and style.
Alot of these cars are simply ugly.
The Genesis cars have a sadly generic very appealing beauty to them like they are trying to hide who made them.
Porsche makes a great looking Panamerica 4s model but there again,it's a race car four door.
Other then the Genesis line of four dorr luxury cars and the Mercedes,who makes a real ( not a sports car ) luxury four door car anymore?
In a market like this,I think I would buy a business license with my name on it for cheap and have my business lease me out a $150000 luxury car for two years and just accept the bite,writing the expense off on my taxes.
Or,just buy the best Toyota four door sedan I could buy.
Because Dear Lord those Lexus's are all hideous looking.

I have seen a 2021 Acura ILX four door that was absolutely beautiful in deep red but that's not a four door luxury car.
That's a sports sedan.
But that was a gorgeous car unlike every other Lexus made today.
So this is way tougher then I thought it would be.

I spoke to a mobile recovery mechanic about 5 years ago, he said he was called out to more BMW’s than any other marque. That says it all to me.
I think Lexus must be watching this and laught a lot with him xD
25 years ago I worked in the Parts Department at a dealer that sold Mercedes, Audi, Porsche and Land Rover. After seeing the prices for their parts, I knew I'd never own one myself unless I was very wealthy. 25 years later, I'm still broke, but I own a Honda so I can at least afford to fix most things on it when it breaks, which doesn't happen often.
Modern BMWs from late 2006 and up are ten times more complex then before because of the overuse of plastic engine parts, turbo chargers and the amount of modern high tech electronics. Those N54 Twin Turbo inline 6 engines had so many problems.
Yeah they were trash but the b58 is a great engine.
2001 were that way too, absolute pos
The N54 is one of BMW's worst engine... Toyota has also missed the mark on some engines (More rare though)

However..
The automanufacturers have to feed their greed somehow.
And that's how just about all of them do it these days is by making vehicles that are throw away or at least semi-throw away.
They make you think it's a great vehicle in looks but then after you buy it you find out later on what a junk heap it can be.
Endless money pit many vehicles are.
Many years ago the chap who used to service my cars, talked about the use of plastic on German cars.
He also said that he would prefer any Japanese made car against any German made car.

My nephew bough a Land Rover a couple of years back and I quit talking to him.
We talk now because he sold that biatch fast when he found out how crappy it was.
This is my favorite channel on TH-cam! Scotty is a straight shooter and that in itself is rare today.
I recently drove a new BMW for a week in Hawaii. It reminded me of my ex-wife. On the outside, it was good looking, it handled well, but the more I was inside of it the more I disliked it. It would nag at me about lane departure without even leaving a lane. Sometimes it would shut off at a light and sometimes it would stay on. When it did turn itself on it was so jerky and rough it was annoying. Granted, it was new but it was a rental, so I might have been the 40th guy to test it out. Kind of like my ex.

hi Scotty .Just bought a 2013 Lexus ES350 56 K miles and everything works as when it was new. It was the cheapest
used Lexus car in the Lexus dealership and they treated me like I was but their top end car. To top it off ,the dealership has a no haggle price (cheapest I could find)
and there is no dealers fees at all. just car price and sales tax. No pressure to buy anything. I was out in 1 1/2 hours driving away.

The funny thing is that BMW actually makes diesel engines that are under the hood of Scotty's beloved Toyotas.

Scotty doesnt have many ideas of how modern cars can work :) he just likes Lada and Dacia - and it is fine ... but the whole video is stupid - because he compares Lada thoughts with a Mercedes Interior

Scotty love your mind, your attitude and experience. I did I.T. for 30 years and I was just as critical with the technology. You're doing a great job my friend.
Technology is about sales and marketing, differentiating from other brands and maximizing sales volume. The repairs are taken care of under the OEM warranty. Get outside the warranty, then you're in trouble. This is the current business philosophy and other industries do the same.
Hell, you can still be under warranty and dealers will do everything not to do the repair. Happened to me with Jeep. Took 5 months and being pissed off at the service department to make them repair it.

German cars are very nice and impressive but the more durable and reliable Japanese cars are hands down better for overall satisfaction

Yeah nissan is no good these days. JatCo cvt transmissions they use are complete junk.
I have owned 4 preowned BMWs. Never had a big issue except an unscheduled repair on a 1989 325ix. The all wheel drive system broke and the dealer helped pay part of the $1200 repair. You can really appreciate these cars after you spend a couple of weeks in any rental car. There is active safety and passive safety. BMW has both cornered. I can have a track experience on low traffic roads and get 37 mpg at the end of the day. I will keep buying them thank you.
I got a buddy that only buys BMW's & used Volkswagen's here near Houston. He's gone thru 4 while my 02' Chevy Blazer ZR2 is still running like a top w/ almost 300k miles on her 🤣

Stop saying 335i n54 turbos cost $3k each lol they cost $1600 for the pair with lifetime warranty and $1500 for labor. OFHG like you mentioned is super easy to fix.

Yep, I'd never consider any tesla because of that giant iPad thingy which you have to look at and mess around with to do anything. There are other reasons like the unnecessarily recessed door handles which _will_ break eventually and cost a bunch to fix.
True, their maintenance is quite expensive. $832 per year with their reliability being the worse. An example would be like you say, bad quality control, things will fall off, be imperfection. Plus when you get into an accident, it will cost a whole lot of money to repair for just a vehicle that has a lot of technology.

Question- Got a 70k mile 09' Escape Non Hybrid i4 engine. My grandparents bought it new & it's always had a strong vibration when idling.. Especially when AC is on & powering down that little engine. I've changed everything to do with the ignition system, MAS, etc. I can't idle it up a tad because it's all electronic. It smooths out if you apply a tad pressure to gas pedal, getting the RPM's up just a tad. The dealership said, they all do it because the engine is so small! I drove others & asked around & they don't have this issue. Scanner shows nothing wrong- $5k scanner tool at my local shop.

Can confirm. My grandfather has a 1994 316i e36 sedan, he's paid the car's value multiple times to the mechanic, it was in bad shape when he bought it, and it hasn't gotten much better.
Happy Easter Scotty!! Love your channel so please keep up the good work. I would never purchase a Mercedes, BMW, or Tesla. I have a 2007 Dodge Charger SXT with the 3.5L V6 and I have 340,000 miles on it and it is still running strong while giving me 20 miles per gallon. I'd rather stick with simple cars than luxury cars...luxury cars will make you poor once they start breaking down.

Dodge doesn't have a great reputation either... I guess it's hit or miss, no matter what car...
@@MartinJones123 I agree. One of my old buddies had a 2006 Dodge Magnum and it gave him problems all the time since he first bought it. My Charger however, has never given me one problem ever in 340,000 miles. My auto mechanics have never seen a Dodge Charger with so many miles and running as quiet as it does. My dad was a mechanic and always told me to take care of my car, so that is what I do. I treat my Charger as if it was my kid.

@@NocThunder I’ve owned quite a few Chrysler products over the past 50 yrs. It’s ALL about how you take care of them. Same with most vehicles. IF you don’t service them then how can you expect them to last.
I agree with Scotty but I think these cars can be a lot of fun and not as headache inducing as long as it's not your daily driver. If you have a lexus for your daily or just something reliable in general, why not buy a cheap small bmw that you don't care if it breaks down and just drive it sometimes or an older Mercedes convertible for the summer? In my opinion, these brands make every newer model less and less reliable because they've already built the name for themselves so they'll get clients regardless & the more it breaks = the more money they make.

Land Rover: requires premium gasoline, the engine is fragile, part replacement is unnecessarily complicated, the security system is as tenacious as the Terminator and as tough to defeat without dealer.

Agreed, most expensive cars are just rebranded cheaper models. No additional engineering or mechanical structure, just added features. However, I understand why people buy them, its a status symbol and statement. Basically the person is saying "hey, I got so much money I can afford to drive a crappy car. Because if it breaks, I can replace it."

Question I have a 2010 Hyundai genesis 4.6 the AC & temperature gauge not working I replaced coolant temperature sensor and thermostat the water pump is working fine ...at one point before I replaced everything once in awhile the AC would sometimes work then stop ...also after replacing everything the electric fan seems to run all the time ...I have googled this for days and no results have any Idea? PS your the MAN!

I am a halfway decent mechanic I do not view my skill anywhere near as high as Scotty's but I've been doing this a fair amount of my life and I 100% agree with Scotty on the plastics thing I utterly refuse to work on BMWs or any German cars for that matter I don't lose any money because I don't work on them cuz I've got plenty of work with all the other car brands... But German cars are just such a f****** headache they're really not worth it... And as a matter of fact everybody that brings a German car by my shop I tell them I don't work on German cars and I recommend that they just sell it and get something reliable like a lexis
Most of these cars are just overengineerd. The example of the unsolved recall action on the Mercedes shows that they can even be a problem for the brand dealers.
I wouldn't advise anyone to do any repairs to them in a general garage, apart from the standard service to the car.
The cars are overengineerd because they want as many USP as possible to justify their huge price tags.
My cousin had a 8 yo 1 and the engine had a blown headgasket, get the head iff and the cylinder liner was damaged, friggin pos bmw, mercedes, audi are.
Are volkswagens as bad ??

Scotty, check this out, I bought a 2000 E39 520i BMW here in Ireland, for 1,600eur, kept it outside the house for a year, put it in for the national car test yesterday, and it passed straight off. All I did to it was stick the rear view mirror back up, tighten the handbrake, and buff the foggy headlight covers. It passed the emissions test with flying colours. The only advisory was the tyres were over 6 years old (still have tons of thread left on them)
Oh, I also fixed those little plastic adjusters in the headlights (all four of them, and then aligned the lights). There is always some plastic issue with them, you're not wrong

Speaking of breaking plastic parts, I remember a recall on (I think it was) the 2000-2001 Ford Focus that had the issue with these plastic flaps in the intake system that could break off and get ingested into the engine. Talk about a bad design. Luckily I never owned one of them (until 2008 at laest, when the pretty much worked out the kinks in the 2.0L 4 cylinder engine, although I think in 2005 they redesigned the engine so it was still a 2.0L but the engine was updated, and I believe that same engine held through until 2011 when they redesigned the focus again for 2012).

Even if car repairs were FREE, I wouldn't want to own a European luxury vehicle. The hassle and inconvenience of dealing with the breakdowns and the downtime are enough reason to sprint away from any opportunity to buy one.
European luxury vehicles are for wealthy people. If you're not part of "the 1%", you have no business owning one.

That’s why I only lease, 2017 X3, 2019 X5, 2022 X5. The inline 6 with 8 speed auto is some sweet power train. And yes, it has the highest depreciation around, however that occurs big time as the warranty ends. I would never buy one new or used. But you can buy extended warranties when new. Once the CANbus design took over in the 90s, forget it. When I started out young in my college days, all I could afford was a $500 car and learned how to fix it.
The 14yo Beamer was unsurprising, the Tesla was somewhat surprising (particularly how the a/c wasn't working)... but the brand new *$150k+* Mercedes, with that many problems - built in *Alabama????* 🤣 Engineered like no other car is right!

hi scotty I have a problem with the steering on my 2016 Toyota Venza limited V6 (sold in Canada made in Kentucky) when changing lanes or making a left or right turn the steering doesn't return to center I have to pull it back to center. I bought the car new have never had any problems with the car (went in last month for the airbag recall and they change a harness) the steering problem happened about 4 days ago. I'm taking the car in tomorrow to put on four new summer tires and get a 4 wheel alignment appointment made weeks ago. Don't trust the dealer or any garage in my area what do think is wrong with my Venza. please help
