Woodchat Shrike (Lanius Senator)

The Woodchat Shrike is a dramatically coloured bird, especially the male. The female is paler as seen in the video, and the juvenile, also shown, is paler still. The audio presents some of its calls and chatter, and several close ups of its behaviour in the wild are shown.
The Woodchat Shrike is a hunter, feeding on insects, smaller birds, lizards, and amphibians.You can often see it watching for prey from lookout perches high in the trees. It lives around the Mediterranean Sea and migrates in wintertime to central Africa.
The Woodchat Shrike has an imperious call, but also chatters softly when alone with its family or companions, and sings when springtime comes. In fact, shrikes are famous for singing together and have been known to sing in groups of up to five--neighbours and family members together--observing split second timing in their harmonies. Their abilities are considered to show that they are sentient, conscious animals.
