Talking Woodchat Shrikes

  • I was lucky to be able to get several sequences of the local woodchat shrikes (Lanius senator) talking and calling to each other this spring. These all live in a wide region of open forest and each day I try to find them by listening for their calls. One has begun alighting near me to pronounce a few sentences, so I have been able to get some of their talk close up, good quality. I hope you enjoy watching the remarkable creatures! The best sequence is slowed by four times for your interest.
    Shrikes are mentioned in my book about bird behaviour: "Birds are Impossible: The Supernatural Ways of the Fliers" because of their singing abilities. They are distinguished by their ability to duet and sing in groups, each bird singing with split second timing.
