  • Here's something a little bit different for you all. This past Saturday, we made the trip down to Philly to check out the grand opening of the newly expanded Queen & Rook Game Cafe on South Street! Just about a block or two away from their old location, this new three-story gaming nirvana has been in business for several years and operates on a table-rental model; with a library of around 2,000 different board games available to play, a modest $7 fee gives you two and a half hours to try out new releases that seem interesting, play old favorites, or learn the obscurities of a random European board game with help from the on-site game masters! They also have bars on both the ground and second floors, as well as a full kitchen featuring both meals and lighter snacks.
Meanwhile, down in the basement, you'll find a brand new addition to the Queen & Rook lineup, a modestly-sized retro arcade. This space offers several dozen games at a rate of $15 for the first hour, and $10 for each additional hour. It's got a good mix of fighting game classics such as Street Fighter II, Tekken, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2, some 80's games in Ms. Pac-Man and Jungle Hunt, 90's beat-em-ups like X-Men and Final Fight, a mixture of pinball machines ranging in eras from the 70's through today, and even a converted Dance Dance Revolution Extreme cabinet for some rhythm gaming fun!
Although it quickly got crowded over here due to the grand opening festivities, we had nothing but great interactions with all of the employees, the food was fresh, hot and tasty, we learned how to play a new spinoff of an old favorite board game of ours, and we got to spend an hour in the arcade. Overall, a fantastic experience, and we definitely look forward to returning the next time we're in town!

Hey (halldoc1 here). Checking out the channel. Love the footage of the arcades. You have to come out and check out Past Times, if you ever come out to Ohio. I am not sure if you were a member of Pinside, so I posted this place on it. I have a friend who is crazy into board games. I am going to have to tell her about this place if she is ever in the Philly area.

They offer retail sales as well as timed table rentals, so if there's a game you absolutely fall in love with, chances are you can take it home with you!
