    Fabulous band, all accomplished musicians, especially Lew Soloff. These guys broke a mould, barriers and got many younger people into jazz etc......... Mr Fielder was also superb on bass.

      Both bands brought out the great jazz-rock sound of the '60s. Danny was greatly influential to me as a drummer. Then Chicago went and started doing sappy ballads and he was left playing quarter notes on the high hat. What a waste.

      I love being able to watch these again, some I remember so well, I can remember who I watched with and what was going on at the time. Miriam Makebe was unforgettable. My mother was a very good singer, and we both fell in love with Miriam singing "Pata Pata" on Ed Sullivan.
      As a child, I expected that my mother would one day perform on Ed Sullivan because she sang better than many famous people. She thought that was cute. I was blessed to have her as my mom. I wish I could hear her sing today.

    Gone was the concept of a 4 player rock or pop group when these guys introduced a jazz element into popular music, leading the way for groups like Chicago. "Smiling Phases" was an LP cut from an album that had three top 5 singles, sold millions of units, and won the Grammy for Album Of The Year. Hearing this performance, you can understand why the album was a giant.

    • @77barrymac
      @77barrymac 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The second album was definitely slicker than its predecessor, though I like them both a lot. And it's interesting that the blueprint for that second album was set forth by Kooper ("Smiling Phases" being one of his song choices), while the production was overseen by Guercio. They kind of self-produced the next few albums, with varying results, and by '74, only the drummer remained.

    Don't forget Jim Fielder on electric bass. One of the best -- pre BS&T, he "sat in" briefly for Bruce Palmer when the latter was unable to record with Buffalo Springfield. That's his bass on "Pretty Girl Why" and he did a couple more songs with "The Herd" before Bruce returned.

      Absolutely. When I was a teen in the 1980s, I happened to pick-up the second BS&T album at a garage sale. At the time, I was just starting on the bass myself, and that album/Jim Fielder blew me away. I consider it a major influence. Jim is right up there with James Jamerson, for me.

    Is this the lineup from the 2nd album with Al Kooper still there? If so not sure they ever recorded with that lineup.

      No, Al K. left after the first album due to creative differences. That opened the door to David Clayton Thomas on lead vocals, and trombonist Dick Halligan moving to the Hammond B3 organ

      @@JoyneFreedom You're right! I never knew this. I had this confused with a different song done by the Temptations that is called "Smiling Faces" but was recorded a few years after BS&T. Thanks for the correction!
      There's another song that mentions "smiling faces" called "Backstabbers" (I think?)
      I often got lyrics wrong. When I was a kid, I didn't hear that there's a "bad moon on the rise", I heard that there was a "baboon on the right"! lol
