I'm so happy to see this collab. Nate Bower's channel has really pushed me to the next level of cardio and combinations power/speed. I was doing JTVanV's home workout 2 combined with Nate Bower's home workout 2 before doing heavybag work, believe me not with the same intensity as either but pushing myself there. Now I've been creating a beginners boxerobics routine using the basic concept of both. Both channels inspire and educate this old-man. Two of the top 3 boxing channels on You-tube.
Thank you coach .I teach Muay Thai & your work helps us all with the Science of striking.Great ,clear & to the point no fluff just clean good science. Respect from Michigan.
Nice demo. I was taught this technique a long time ago but my timing never seemed to work for me under pressure. Lately, under a different coach, it's been working for me. I am nowhere near what you just showed but I'm starting to own the principle. Like you I am short and always need to close with taller opponents. So getting inside close this is one of a few indispensable key techniques. Thx for a great demo.
Thank you. That was very interesting to me. I trained martial arts for 50 plus years with many greats including Bruce Lee and Shaolin Master Joe Chu. None of them provided any better break down of techniques than you do.
Great tip! I play a lot with a south paw guy these days ..will see how this works on his jab :P Second thig is, I thought you were going for taht Mayweather pivit with a left overhand hook. It's pretty much the same but executed while going backwards, runing away from the agressor Cheers!
I train Thai boxing, but i started out my martial arts journey with BJJ. Did it for a year under a certain gracie. That after I got proficient, I wanted to learn how to strike, and began Muay thai. I find muay thai much funner, and I now have much more experience in it than I did in BJJ, and I still do Muay thai, but I find the skills I learned in BJJ invaluable. Im comfortable grappling, and that helps in the clinch even in muay thai. You can position someone to deliver a harder knee strike if you know how to grapple. As for cross blocking, I wanna add it to my arsenal. But like I said I do muay thai. It will need to be situationally used, otherwise Ill just block normally with my guard, or use my right hand to stop his left and my left to stop his right, because its not good to leave your face/head open when headkicks are in the equation.
thanks for the video you gave me a heads up on this to make sure to always keep that right hand up whenever jabbing because i attempt to forget at times but good video bro
really nice stuff man. you can also duck that left hook if ur timing isnt that great and u somehow arent ready to throw that overhand left hook and sometimes beginners like my self and dudes i spar with mostly they throw themselves out of balance after throwing left hook and kinda spining to much or keeping that hand low, thats a nice way to counter for me. P.s hope u understood what i meant.
This is amazing content thank you i never liked countering the cross with a left hook after because its too slow to land on a decent puncher you have to get him in the half beat
This was awesome, you should train a less experienced boxer in these videos so that there's no need for the advertisement at the end . Cool if you pointed the camera on him then pointed out the mistake and corrected it. you could work with new people every time or what ever. thanks for the video's great content . Learning heaps today :)
Hello Jason great breakdown of this video especially the cross blocking. The first time I saw the cross blocking was Holyfield vs Foreman. You could see Holyfield use that from time to time and the fight. Jason also another great video on how to use the left hook very cool jacket by the way! Did the link that I sent you of me walking did that ever work? Jason also want you to know that I meant what I said if you told me to go through a brick wall I would do it in a heartbeat! Thank you so much for your encouraging words. I also have you on Facebook now! I have one of your pictures on my computer I looked at it every time I workout and it looks like you're right there with me tell me to keep on keep it going I will never give up I would rather die than quit!
Ah... I've been doing this and always wondered why I get hit with the left hooks a lot. I don't bring my hand back fast enough.. Once again, these videos are tremendous.
Hey JT love your videos man great insight, dedication and heart in them.especially your instructionals videos (i purchased your footwork instructional.)anyways i was wondering if you could do a detailed video on shift punching possibly include it with something like skipping to an angle to fire from a blind side.shift punching seems to be an art not used as nearly as much as it used to be back with guys like bob fitzsimmons or guys who would shift like Willie Pep and i think its a VERY valuable tool.Thank you for everything you do for the arts and may youre training and journey be blessed.
Thank you for the support. I think I know what you mean, in this video I have a shift but without the punch, I"m not sure if this is what you mean - Boxing - Side Step Drill to Create Angles
thanks for your comment, those are all basics which I cover in my beginner boxing book and video that I sell here - www.precisionstriking.ca/product/beginner-boxing-a-roadmap-to-your-first-fight/
JT please keep this up this is valuable information for teaching purposes. My question for you is I had a trainer tell me not to train with a mouth guard he says that it'll conflict with breathing while working the heavy bag, I took his advice but I really didn't see a difference is he right about his perspective?
I've trained both with a mouthguard and without. I don't find much difference, the real key is to train hard and focus on exhaling air when you punch. That's most important in my opinion, as for the rest I don't know.
Kick ass video man! Question, how would a south paw counter an orthodox's straight right. Slip the straight right to the outside and come back with a left cross? Do you have a video that talks about southpaw defenses + counters? Thanks Ivan
Gerardo Morales yes, that's one solid way. Another is to simply twist and block it, similar to the blocks in this video - th-cam.com/video/plua4JJxwMo/w-d-xo.html&lc=z13lhtbontadhrevd22bhxbowtipi3ztn I don't have a complete video on Southpaw counters but here is one on jab counters - th-cam.com/video/ZltFWze7Cok/w-d-xo.html
i'm sure he has at least one video to help you out with that. in fact i know he does. go searching on his channel, there's a ridiculous amount of information, just gotta look.
keithmb33 there is one for speed but none for power :( i know they are sorta related but i was hoping for some exercises that he can show us or instruct us on certain rest to work ratios when working power on the heavy bag
myron snow power is overrated. its about hitting and not get hit. a strong punch WILL follow you when you are skilled after thousands of hours of boxing
Hello, can i ask, how do you train the right hand defense? im pretty bad at blocking his hand, sometimes i extend it not on purpose and i dont react on time, how do i train that without a partner? i dont have a partner every day..
JT coincidentally I just watched the Holmes Norton 78 fight, and Norton is in crossblock stance all the time. I feel bad criticizing a champion but I feel like he gets hit way too much straight in the face. By jabs and crosses but also vulnerable to left hook. Thoughts? great video this one thanks
sometimes a good technique won't work in all cases, Holmes was fast with one of the best jabs in boxing, can make you look really bad. That being said, you are right that cross blocking is not for everyone. Holyfield and Hagler used it well too
First its important to know that it's not the Philly Shell that's important but the person using it. Any block that is properly timed and properly done is hard to counter and penetrate. A great example is to see how Maidana broke apart Broner's shell but had a much harder time against Mayweather. That being said, a lot of guys have success with the fake jab and left hook and the overhand right. Also watch Mayorga vs. Forrest and watch how Mayorga comes over top with a double right hand to knockdown Forrest.
Excellent advice, when I spar my cousin whose got a few amateur fights he uses the cross block fairly well and thats the only thing I can catch him with is the fake jab lead hook and overhand. I'll have to watch Mayorga/Forrest. Thanks for the advice JT. BTW any good footwork drills specific to Muay Thai.
KING MMA/Roufusport Morgantown Solid bro. I'm not sure about muay thai, what a lot of guys with muay thai do is add boxing to their muay thai. On my channel I have a footwork playlist, and I also sell a footwork instructional video here - www.precisionstriking.ca/product/boxing-footwork-instructional-video/
+JT Van V Don't even read it. I don't want to be smartass but i admit I trained boxing for 6 years and i think your partner makes too big step with his front leg and very short with back leg that makes him much easier target to hit with this technique and it will be very hard to make a step back and get smaller punishment/not get hit. Maybe its just in this movie. Im both handed right now ( i know its weird but its only because when i was younger i fought in most cases with my left hand front [ i was left handed ] and when i get to my first boxing class my trainer sad i do all wrong and i had to start fighting with right hand in front of me. ) My fav technique vs orthodox person that is much higher than me is (im in philly shell guard [ i still have to learn to block better with my shoulder much better ] ) when the guy goes with his left hand jab i switch up stance ( i step up with my left leg while bringing down under his right straight and I go with not very hard straight right and i end with left hook. You have to be rly fast ( In most cases you can get very small damage from the guy you are "getting" in cause only thing he can do is very fast jump back and maybe throw very short left hand jab ) but you have to be very quick with step that switch your stance and with left hook ( straight right is only to get his hands in front of his face ( and you dont want to hit him very hard cause this could make him to far from the left hook - the left hook is for finishing the guy ). I just wanted to share. Maybe you will breakdown someday this weird technique when you will be bored :D Anyway love your movies, i watch them often. You can always learn something or find ways to get better with things you can already. Thanks for your knowledge.
I'm a little guy. Defended myself yesterday by using crossed arm deflections so that that I redirected my opponent's energy to the side. Big guy got in my face. Couldn't connect with that face. I didn't counterattack because I didn't want trouble. It happened in the store...I just wanted some ground beef
how would the basic rear hand and cross blocking parry work in a barefist situation. I do it so often now, so i need to make sure i can make adjustments for real life situations when i am not wearing gloves.
Great video. I've been boxing for a while, every time I see one of you videos I either learn something new or it reminds me to work on an aspect that I've gotten sloppy with. One question, my son is 5 years old and he loves to watch me train and watch your videos with me. He really wants to learn and I have shown him some stuff, but my wife insists he is too young to actually begin real training. How old is the right age to start them training?
***** thanks again. I also have a 6 year old son, and I think you have to guage the mindset of your boy. Some kids have more of a soldier like mindset, you can teach them and they love to work and do drills, other kids (like my boy) like to play, have fun and do a bunch of different things. So I would say that you need to go by that old Cus D'Amato saying, "to fan the spark until it becomes a flame, and fan the flame until it becomes a burning blaze" but your boy has to have that desire first. I think 5-6 is good for learning and punching and hitting the bag, but I wouldn't put my boy in any amateur fights until he was about 11-12 and he told me he really wanted to do it. A mom is never gonna want her boy to box lol.
great vid jason! could you do a video about crossblocking the left with a righthand counter. i've tried it a bit during sparring but i noticed i'm just a beat to slow because i still have to force myself to do the technique
to be honest I've never tried that so I don't know how well it would work. In that case I would be afraid of eating a right hand because with my left leg forward I couldn't step outside unless you step forward into southpaw. Not sure if this is what you mean.
yes you got the idea right. i also find it a risky manouvre but the man who explained it to me told me that you parry his left very quickly with your right while landing your own right. and stepping in with you left foot. so i guess that means if he does a fast 1 , 2 you would slip the right hand. though i don't use this often because of the fear of the right hand and because it doesn't come naturally to me. i have in a few occasions done it and it really suprised my opponent. but i'm not on a high level of boxing so maybe it only works with people who don't react as quickly to openings.
thank you. there may be but I can't say I've tried it. in this case you probably know that if you use that right hand to block the southpaw jab you are wide open for a left hand.
I'm having problems with an aggressive inside fighting brawler kinda boxer,he throws punches and is always trying to come forward with loaded shots, how do I effectively stop his aggression,i'm 15,6ft2,and 233 pounds. He's 21,6ft2,and 240 pounds,I love defensive outboxing and counter punching, but it's really hard,I started three weeks ago,got any ideas.
Great video, a real return to form, thanks J. Love the more in depth vids that drill down into a technique. How do you mentally prepare for a fight? In my last fight I had put in the training hours, got my focus and had enough ability but got in the ring and took 2 rounds to get going - my head wasn't right and my confidence wasn't there. I didn't feel overly nervous but it just didn't seem to come together on the night. Any advice for next time?
Thank you bud. Well it would be good to see exactly west happened, but I usually take a round to get going. Part of it is having combos and moves ready in advance that you can call upon, another part is turning the switch in your mind that says "f**k it" but this is up to the individual
Big fan of all your work! Watched many of your vids and apply many of your techniques. Question, when slipping outside of the right hand, why not step with the left foot AND fire a blind right hand inside the bigger man's punch (simultaneously)? Especially if you feel the bigger man give up height and coming forward. Sort of how Marquez knocked out Pac. I'm taller than most and when sparring, the left hook is easy for me to spot because my opponent has to slip downward and then come up with the hook (2 beats as you teach ). When I have someone that gives me head movement while firing inside my punches I tend to get jammed up more. Just my humble opinion. Thank you again for all your work.
Albert Russo Thank you Albert. This is only one of my videos bro lol. In this video I'm demonstrating this particular technique. I cover what you are talking about in another video somewhere. I've covered every option practically. its not a matter of "why not" or one option over the other, its a matter of knowing all your options.
I'm assuming you mean an overhand left out of the orthodox stance, so I will answer based on that. I experimented with this punch a lot and found that I was getting caught with straight counter right hands, it doesn't seem to be as stealth as the left hook. However, what I started to do was drop down or slip right a bit and throw almost something like and overhand jab, almost an overhand left. In other words if I dropped down and threw the punch like a corkscrew it was more effective than trying to slightly loop it over. That is just my experience, you should give it a try for yourself, that's best way to learn (in sparring of course)
What are your thoughts on sparring with a beginner and all he does is throwing unclean techniques and wild punches? Sometimes my trainer ask me to spar with a beginner just to allow him to improve but all he does is throwing wild punches and clinching me. What should i do ? Should i just spar with people of same level or better than me ?
This kind of sparring once in awhile is good for you. Lots of 'good' boxers throw wild and unclean punches, you can work on seeing them coming and on Defense. I usually let these guys work for a couple rounds and then I'll hit them with a body shot to slow them down
neck size can come down to genetics generally, look at Golovkins neck, tiny, but he works that pencil neck hard and has one of the best chins in boxing.
Hi jt, love your vids. Got a question, as a southpaw when I throw my right hook I'm always caught with a shot and can't seem to stop it which Kind of puts me of balance. How can I stop this? Also, as a short guy I'm finding it hard to come in against taller guys as I'm not so fast or light on my feet. Any drills for this? Many thanks
Which shot are you caught with? it could mean the time between your straight left and right hook is too slow. I have a number of videos on head movement here is a playlist link below, I also sell an instructional video on how to get inside, check out the link for that too. th-cam.com/play/PL4Mb5fp5ywgLLWtiBEeCvR_AiA6Farnyz.html www.precisionstriking.ca/product/video-head-movement-and-getting-inside/
perryrodriguez I've done a few different seminars in the US and a couple in Canada. Feel free to contact me at precisionstriking@yahoo.ca to talk details. thx
B0sn3r it does but you would be open for a big left hand shot. dont do it against a southpaw. against orthodox the guy is making a full commitment with that right hand which gives you time
+Michael O'Sullivan Hey Michael, I would definitely consider that. It would depend on a few factors, total cost and if I can really add value to your group. Feel free to email me here - precisionstriking@gmail.com
+JT Van V Hey I just sent you an email there. I had previously sent one in February but I must of has the wrong address as I sent it to precisionstriking@yahoo.com. I look forward to your reply, Thanks, Michael
I hope there's is no offense but you did amateur fights and you have many techniques. Did something stop you from going pro? Or was it just one of your decisions?
I don't take offense. It was just time for me to move on in my life, make some money and start a family. I went back to school and starting working on my career. There are a few other factors but it was a well thought out decision.
Excellent video. Thanks JVT
Thx for giving us this free information, appreciated

I'm glad you did a video on this. I've done this block before instinctively in sparring but was afraid it wasn't the best block to do.
That’s great coach, even demonstrated vs taller longer opponent, Great tips appreciate your teaching

I personally wouldn't use that in a street fight, I think you would be much better off with an MMA style block, elbow fairly high.
I love the shirt! Where did you get it? My coach preaches it everyday!
George Garcia look up Infamous Team Reed on TH-cam or FB and ask the guy if you can buy one
Thank you!
Thanks. You're right, Mom is not going to want him to box. I'll just keep it casual and like you said, see if he has long term interest.
great vid jason! could you do a video about crossblocking the left with a righthand counter. i've tried it a bit during sparring but i noticed i'm just a beat to slow because i still have to force myself to do the technique
to be honest I've never tried that so I don't know how well it would work. In that case I would be afraid of eating a right hand because with my left leg forward I couldn't step outside unless you step forward into southpaw. Not sure if this is what you mean.
yes you got the idea right. i also find it a risky manouvre but the man who explained it to me told me that you parry his left very quickly with your right while landing your own right. and stepping in with you left foot. so i guess that means if he does a fast 1 , 2 you would slip the right hand. though i don't use this often because of the fear of the right hand and because it doesn't come naturally to me. i have in a few occasions done it and it really suprised my opponent. but i'm not on a high level of boxing so maybe it only works with people who don't react as quickly to openings.
florisjanpietster yes that is also a great technique! thank you!
Nice! I like this technique.
Is there a version of this against a southpaw?
thank you. there may be but I can't say I've tried it. in this case you probably know that if you use that right hand to block the southpaw jab you are wide open for a left hand.
Cool sorry must have missed that video. Thanks again for your work and fast response.
I've got a question that's been bugging me, could you do a overhand left instead of a overhand right and what would be the pros and cons of it?
I'm assuming you mean an overhand left out of the orthodox stance, so I will answer based on that. I experimented with this punch a lot and found that I was getting caught with straight counter right hands, it doesn't seem to be as stealth as the left hook. However, what I started to do was drop down or slip right a bit and throw almost something like and overhand jab, almost an overhand left. In other words if I dropped down and threw the punch like a corkscrew it was more effective than trying to slightly loop it over. That is just my experience, you should give it a try for yourself, that's best way to learn (in sparring of course)
To accept the request. And then I can't put a link on your page pretty cool stuff on your page too by the way. !
I usually let these guys work for a couple rounds and then I'll hit them with a body shot to slow them down
thanks!
I've been watching these vids for a while and I would like to learn how to make my neck bigger
neck size can come down to genetics generally, look at Golovkins neck, tiny, but he works that pencil neck hard and has one of the best chins in boxing.

Do you hold seminars? I would like to bring you out to our gym.
perryrodriguez I've done a few different seminars in the US and a couple in Canada. Feel free to contact me at precisionstriking@yahoo.ca to talk details. thx
good👌👍
Does this work in orthodox vs southpaw? if so would you block with your lead hand just like in orthodox v orthodox?
B0sn3r it does but you would be open for a big left hand shot. dont do it against a southpaw. against orthodox the guy is making a full commitment with that right hand which gives you time
Hey coach, thanks for another great video! Can I ask you where can I buy that T-shirt? Lungs No Guns, thank you :)
Adam88Marz Yes, send Terrance a message on FB. He is the designer - facebook.com/terrance.reed.982?fref=ts
Would you travel to ireland for seminar?
+Michael O'Sullivan Hey Michael, I would definitely consider that. It would depend on a few factors, total cost and if I can really add value to your group. Feel free to email me here - precisionstriking@gmail.com
+JT Van V Hey I just sent you an email there. I had previously sent one in February but I must of has the wrong address as I sent it to precisionstriking@yahoo.com.
I look forward to your reply,
Thanks,

+jduncanm3golf philly shell
jduncanm3golf no,,mayweather is running and hugging not blocking
I hope there's is no offense but you did amateur fights and you have many techniques. Did something stop you from going pro? Or was it just one of your decisions?
I don't take offense. It was just time for me to move on in my life, make some money and start a family. I went back to school and starting working on my career. There are a few other factors but it was a well thought out decision.
Is it just me who feels like weaving/rolling under the right hand to the left is safer than slipping it to the left? 😂
JT VAN are you a pro boxer before.. ?
Money
Ok Jason I sent you a friend request on Facebook. under Kenny J Nabors just waiting for you the request. The
