I mean, that’s he point. Though neither of them accepts it, or even realizes it, the very fact that they know how the other one thinks despite them butting heads is proof of their friendship. Just because you’re friends doesn’t mean you have to perfectly harmonize with the other person. As long as they can walk next to each other on relatively equal terms and toss a dumpling for the other person to eat, then that’s a friend! But of course, while Dragons have things like beliefs and ideals just like ones that any human can have, they really only see those beliefs and ideals in another person. “Agree with the ones who share the same belief, accept that you’ll always disagree with everybody else.” is essentially how Dragons think. This is also why the various Dragon factions come into conflict and see it as “the way things are” rather than even considering to sit down and talk since they are so deeply rooted into their ideals. The entire point of Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is that it’s about Dragons visiting our own world and (slowly but surely) coming to learn things, both about themselves and humanity via living life in a way that a human being would, which sometimes works sometimes doesn’t as Dragons can’t exactly acclimate to their new environment when they are so used to firing laser beams of death and performing inhuman physical feats whenever they deem necessary… ahaha~ And of course, this entire premise starts with Kobayashi and Tohru and spreads to different Dragons and people with different kinds of relationships (Tohru being (or at least attempting to be) Kobayashi’s maid being the main focus/selling point, hence the name of the anime).
So yeah, what Elma and Tohru don’t realize about their own relationship, Kobayashi can see clear as day, because they are Dragons, she is not.
That’s my interpretation anyways

Even many of the conversation scenes in this show have better animation than most shounens. That's the magic of KyoAni.
The lore in this story is surprisingly well established.

@@extremealucard2708 well to be fair I would say Kyoto animation didn't really specialize in action anime like Ufotable so it's more than admirable that they are able to achieve this kind of quality.

I love how in this scene, we see both the benefits and issues of both factions due to the character's personalities-
The Harmony faction sounds great and noble, but because of Elma's weakness for food, her role as a distant observer and guide for the sake of peace was being warped into that of a being of worship. While her intentions were noble, her weakness being exploited would have resulted in the human suffering there going back to square 1 or worse, just by her presence. We see how a desire for peace can be manipulated.
The Chaos faction appear to be murderous anarchists, but because of Tohru's strong regard of principles, while her acts of chaos were certainly violent and likely murderous, they were not always acts of wanton destruction. She destroyed the palace not for the fun of it, but because she was disgusted by how Elma in her eyes, had been ignorantly swayed by the actions of mere humans to the point that it would turn her into a hypocrite if things remained as is. Here, we see how chaos can serve as a force of good (sometimes).
Sounds like there was a little chaos in Elma's order, and a little order in Tohru's chaos. ☯️
There are sub factions as well, which we might see this season (we'll definitely hear it in dialogue). The leadership of the Harmony faction (which includes Elma because she's the granddaughter of the #2 dragon) are genuinely interested in helping humanity, but there are dragons like pre-Kobayashi Ilulu in Harmony that are only in the faction because the some of the religious bits became quite... Extreme. Think Aztec. There are also those like Clemene that are extremely anti Chaos to the point of murdering humans who help Chaos dragons.
You forget that Tohru's viewpoint is basically blasphemy in the eyes of the Chaos Faction. The Chaos Faction primary view is the hatred and destruction of mankind.
Look at Ilulu for example, her branch loves the idea of destroying humans. It doesn't take much for an extremist faction to take over the organization.
I'm sure in time Chaos Faction would go back to slaughtering humans for fun again.

I forgot about that, so i just assumed that regular Chaos members practiced a more noble form of chaos- that is, destroying violent humans and whatever they deemed to be dragon worship, while Illulu's sub-faction believed in destruction for the sake of it- pure chaos.
@@darrylferguson3622 Basically what I understand is that the Chaos and Harmony Faction both came into an agreement that neither of them will interfere with humans.
But the moment that agreement comes to an end Chaos will go back to slaughtering human civilizations and Harmony would be protecting them.

What strikes me the most is that Tohru was the one to be more “harmonious” than Elma then. She had gone to put an end to Elma’s being a false idol, when as a chaos dragon she could’ve just let it gone on and let the humans brew war within themselves. Instead, Tohru fought Elma who was ruled by her vices to stop her from continuing a damaged system that would hurt the humans. XD Tohru is the ultimate anti-villain.

It's not exactly that, as far as I have seen. Tohru, as of the Chaos faction, holds the mindset that dragons are, and should always remain above the existence of humanity. If humans attacked her while she was simply trying to nest in a castle, she would have no problem wiping them out but often preferred to leave so as not to attract dragons of the Harmony faction and get into a larger brawl that wastes her time.
Thus, she was offended by what she saw as Elma lowering herself to be closer to humanity' simply to sate her own gluttony. It's the primary reason why Elma initially and vehemently despised Tohru upon first arriving on Earth, because she saw her, the same dragon that scolded her for being involved with humans, happily in submission to one, Kobayashi. Hypocritically doing the exact same as, if not worse than what she fought Elma over in the instance shown.

Even back then, all you had to do was feed her and you basically win her over.
Well, now we know what would've happened to the town if Elma didn't put up those magic barriers.
the town?! they looked like they destroyed a few kingdoms there.
Before a huge chunk of Japan would be turned into rubble. The JSDF would enter and try and take at least one of them out, Toru or Ilulu. They would do some strong damage to one of them but Toru and Ilulu have so much AOE damage effect the JDSF would have to retreat as they are losing tones of civilians and troops.
Then we get an epic cross over with dragon pilots and dragon maid.

Y'know, the joke of the day is that "this had more animation than all of Seven Deadly Sins season 3". But I think if you broke this down, this episode might genuinely have had more animation frames than Seven Deadly Sins season 3.
Bruh, take art school. Its animation style, art design, and fluid transitions. You can have less frames and still make it look good.

so refreshing to see an anime that did not cheap out and do bad 3D graphics for the dragon fight. The animation is way better then 90% of recent anime.

Well now I can see why Elma and Tohru were at odds at first. I'm glad to see that they were at least able to bury the hatchet and be friends in their own way.

Tohru's got a point. Honestly the more I'm learning about the "harmony faction" the more they're giving me the creeps. I have to wonder if the chaos faction sprung up not just from wanting to destroy but also to call out harmony on their hypocrisy.

Nah, both are extreme groups that would *probably* never stop its clash the only way the characters can be happy for now is being away from both groups
They're both considered the "oddballs" of their factions.
It's not exactly a good idea to base an entire factions MO based on how their most well-known oddball act in public.
There are also various sub-groups within each organization. There are those in the Harmony Faction that genuinely want to help humans and to establish peace, but there are also those who want to establish themselves as the rulers of humanity via religion and sacrifices. There are those in the Chaos faction who want to destroy all humans, and those who simply wish to be left to their own devices and to do as they please like Tohru and Fafnir.
Tohru can easily spout principles when she's a dragon that can destroy worlds and crush armies. It is a viewpoint of those privileged with great power.
Humans do not have such a luxury when they have Chaos Dragons and Demons that slaughter them.
Both their positions made sense from both a chaos/harmony mindset and from their personal character traits. This fight was well thought out.

@@teleportedbreadfor3days well in both cases, the animation is still very smooth even in the duller moments. I think it's more or less their brand now, just: "slice of life but 4K". Plus, slice of like doesn't have to be cheap. I do recommend you watch Nichijou and Dragon Maid, they're just *chef kiss*

Elma's dragon/serpent form is absolutely fantastic, it looks amazing overall and is just outright awesome in combat.

I got to say...expected a more creative title here.
Did love how pure and enjoyable their past together was. Really did develop a deep bond. Even their fight came out of Tohru caring too much about Elma to let things stay the way they were.
This season has more fight scenes and I love it, honestly I want to see more of their original world in the future

you know, for being a harmony dragon, Elma doesn't exactly make the cut of it, cause harmony dragons are not suppose to interfere with human affairs, but her damn sweet tooth gets in the way of that, she's like a dog, a dog who shouldn't be eating human food, and some people, namely our kind, took advantage of that said sweet tooth, started up a cult, and attempted to invoke a war against other nations to enforce their religion onto others, so what Tohru did was a good thing, despite Elma being dense and failed to understand this, so this shows me that there's flaws within the Harmony faction.

Something interested I noticed about Elma in the flashbacks was her pupils don't have that white center like they do normally for most of the scenes.
I don't know if it's the source material getting better in these chapters, the studio just hitting the ground running or both but damn does it feel like each episode is better than the last.
