    Great video so informative, I have recently had to work with LPA for my father-in-law as he was diagnosed with dementia 5 years ago and had set this in place. Made things so much easier, but my mother-in-law didn't do one as she didn't think there was a need. Now her husband is in care home and she is struggling to cope were finding it very hard just to make phone calls to get information on bills etc as nobody will talk to us. You have encouraged us to look into this in more detail for ourselves Thank you

      Thanks Angela- it's never as simple as it seems is it? Situations change over time and personal circumstances can change rapidly as we get older. We were happily drifting along until Dad's diagnosis and then so many things to deal with...along with handling all the emotional aspects at the same time.
      Glad that you found the video of use. Thanks for sharing your experiences👍

    Excellent video on an important subject, thank you both. I’d also stress the importance of making a Will which over 50% of adults in the UK don’t have!

      Thank you - yes we are one of the 50% of adults - we do have wills that we did when the children were babies but they definitely need updating! It is on our list of things to do

    Many thanks for the video both of you. This is very useful information as I’m nearly retired and this is a subject I need to give some serious consideration very soon.

    I can't agree more with this. My parents adamantly refused to do these and then the wheels came off....a year of hell followed trying to deal with their issues and get them safe and cared for. Without the POAs it was 100x more difficult for us to do it and the mess still isn't sorted fully. DO IT AND DONT DUMP YOUR MESS ON YOUR KIDS.

      It's so true. I wonder how many people have found themselves in our situation? It must be a real issue across the Nation, and yet not many people actually talk about it. Agree that it's good for us and also good for our kids.
      Thanks for the comment.👍

    Excellent information and a really important subject. A subject that some don’t like to think about, but key that they do. 👍🏻

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Dominic- that pretty much sums up how we felt. It's not an easy thing to discuss or consider, however life without an LPA is immeasurably more difficult sometime in the future.
      Thanks as always for the comment👍

    We set up Wills & LPA’s (EPA) as they were then, way back in our 20’s, it’s never too early.

      @earlyretirementwanderlust  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So true Gillian! We set our Wills up at a similar age, but definitely need to update them as our kids no longer need custodianship arrangements as they are in their late 20's now!
      A gentle reminder of something we need to get on with.

    My Mum set up her LPA when my Dad died 40 years ago aged 56. At the time as a 24 year old I thought nothing of it but when she had to go into care aged 88 it made the whole process of dealing with her affairs so much easier. My wife and I are currently setting ours up - should probably have done it sooner. Your advice is excellent 👍

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Graham, always good to hear other people's experiences. We absolutely agree that it's never too soon, the LPA just hangs around in the background until we need it.
      Thanks for the comment.👍

    Thanks for raising this important issue. As you say it is important to do this whilst you are well and your capacity to appoint attorneys is not affected by illness. I would also add that it is helpful to give a copy of the completed LPA for health and welfare to the GP. This can be coded on the medical records, and saved electronically to be referred to if the situation urgently requires it. Also in health, mental capacity is specific to the decision being made, so there isn’t really a blanket “loss of capacity” for most people.

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for this advice Gillian- absolutely spot on! Mental Capacity is such a complex area, and it is good to hear that there is context specific applications.
      Many thanks for contributing to the discussion👍

    Very important to do this…it was setup for my husband’s mum, and it made things heaps easier when we had to sort her affairs when she became ill. We have it set up for ourselves as well and updated our wills.

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We seem to keep putting off updating our will and it is something that is nagging at us that we really just need to get on and do.
      Thinking of our end is never going to be the most pleasant of experiences, but in reality, there is no avoiding it! So it is better to get things in order for the people that we love so that there job is as easy as possible when the time comes.

    A good account.
    One trap is appointing attorneys jointly. If one can't act the whole thing fails. Better to appoint jointly and severally.
    It is a good idea to give a lot of thought as to preferences as many people leave these sections blank. This is particularly the case with medical treatment, housing and care. It can be daunting coming to terms with your own mortality and many people find it reassuring to set out their wishes. If the attorneys are your children it also helps them in making what can be very emotionally draining decisions.

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Margaret- thanks for this and so true. The written guidance on this part of the process is written really well and really does emphasise the importance of Jointly and Severally unless you have specific reservations.
      We absolutely agree that mapping out our wishes makes life easier for our Attorney children in the future. Some decisions are very emotionally draining to do, so anything we can do for our loved ones to make it easier has to be a bonus.
      Thanks for the comment and insightful advice. 👍

    I really hope this video encourages everyone to get LPAs in place. It helps those that care about you look after you when you assistance.
    My 58yo brother fell ill and was unconscious for 2 months. His wife and I got all the paperwork sorted to apply for Deputyships without the added cost of a solicitor. It just needs a clear head from an organised person to go through all the documents. His wife was dealing with all the emotional turmoil of the situation, so I did the research and guided her through the process - at her speed. Keeping the costs down were important as he was the main breadwinner and has been unable to work since. He has now regained capacity but is physically disabled. So the Deputyship has finished and LPAs have been put in place.
    My LPA? Done ✓

      Thanks for this Zilly- glad that you managed to get everything sorted.
      It's definitely when life throws you these curve balls that you realise how important stuff like this is. We are not really sure why LPA's don't have a higher profile in "adulting" life as they really are so important to us all. Not only does it safeguard our own wishes, it also makes life immeasurably easier for our loved ones who may have to make decisions for us in the future.
      Thanks for the comment👍

      Thanks both- it really is one of those things that is easy to set up for an uncertain future. We never know when we may need it (or if we will ever really need it🤞), but it is reassuring that it is there for both our selves and our loved ones.

    I guess a lot of people out there do not know much about LPA. It can save a lot of heartache. Nobody wants to have The Court of Protection involved in their families lives.
    Also if I can give some advise back to yourselves and anyone else thinking of doing an LPA.
    Do it NOW. Not "in the near future."

      So true Chris! Such simple advice can avoid so much heart ache and complications in the future.
      We cannot believe that up to a few years ago, we had no idea about these things. How things change!
