Thanks for the video, I completely endorse everything you say in it. My own personal challenge when I took early retirement at the beginning of 2019 was to walk the circumference of the Earth (40,073km / 24901 miles) in 10 years. Six years later I have covered 26,400km so far. Like you I just really enjoy walking and being out in nature but I am sure it has also been wonderful for both my physical and mental health.
Wow - that really is quite a challenge!! and you are certainly having a good go at it - I went onto Garmin to see how far I have hiked this year and it is just under 1200km - it would take us forever to get around the world at that rate 😂 🥾 I do like the element of a challenge to help keep me motivated to get out there. I don't think I will make the 4th Everest this year as we had no gains in Thailand at all! I have done over 1000m in the Dales this week and just the fact that I am getting out there makes me happy - we have noticed we lost a bit of our hill fitness while in Thailand 😬
Jackie love following you both .... i am not a type following herds / prefer to make my own life ....but you just do exactly the things I / we like too ..... keep up posting ....looking forward to the next one of yours .....p.s. I retire age 60 TOMORROW ....so you understand why I am following you both 👍👍
Thank you - hopefully you have had a great last day and are ready to enjoy whatever the future now brings. It was a very strange feeling knowing that we didn't have to go into work ever again and it has taken us the last 2 years to stop thinking about time in school terms! Happy retirement x
Thank you - it is good to be back - the weather has been pretty kind to us in the Dales so we have managed to get out most days unlike last December when it chucked it out most days!
Hi Jackie this was the perfect video this morning. I’m going to look into my own walking challenge. Thanks for the inspiration and I wish you and Richard and wonderful holiday. 🎄❤️🎄❤️🎄
Thank you - I like having these 2 challenges as they make me get out and about - sometimes when I am not really wanting to. And every time - I always feel better for having a walk. Have a great Christmas x
Hi Jackie, good to see you doing the wellness Thursday, very informative. Because of our two Labrador’s we are out every day no matter what the weather does and like where you are, here in the west of Yorkshire it’s just as wet and unfortunately this winter foggy. We average 5 miles every day sometimes more sometimes less which we can track on our phones. However they are not accurate so think we need a Garmin watch. Thanks for the recommendation.
Thanks Jill - it was very strange just me sat in front of the camera but I have been asked quite frequently about the Everest Anywhere challenge so thought I would give Richard a break! Having a dog is a fantastic reason to get out and do you steps. We have had a great walk in the hills today as we finally had a blue sky day - it was beautiful and so refreshing! I have had 2 very basic Garmin watches over the years which I never take off - they are easy to use and give lots of strange bits of data I don't need but find fascinating. Richard had to switch the stress levels off as it stressed him if it was 'high' - too much caffeine I think 😂
@@earlyretirementwanderlust We have also had a blue sky day, it was lovely. Your comment about Richard and his stress levels made me laugh. Thanks for info about the Strava app I will look into it to that. With regard to the Garmin watch I’m going to put it on my Birthday present wish list. I have a ‘big’ birthday coming up next year and I know people will be asking my husband what I would like. It drives him mad because I’m not the sort of girl that is always wanting things so he normally doesn’t have a clue. Thanks again.
Jackie your great video today was like a voice from the universe telling me to get back into daily 10K min. daily walking. A few years ago that was part of my daily routine and I use to be part of daily step challenges with groups of friends on Fitbit. Since then I’ve been in start/stop limbo! Thanks for the motivation - feeling ready today, shoes and watch are set!
Hope you got out for a nice walk - we went out the back of Settle for a hike as we have had a lovely blue sky day in the Dales - so good for the soul! It's been easier to keep to the 10k steps a day this December as it has not rained as much. Last December I only did 220,000 steps as is was so bad! Have a great Christmas and send our best wishes to Hannah too x
Great goals and super important as we get older - my 60th birthday year travels have led to an unplanned over 20,000 per day so I’m more than happy with that. I love to hike and run so that bit comes easily to me but I’ve added strength and balance training more recently and I’m doing it though it is sometimes a challenge to be consistent when travelling.
Wow 20k steps a day is a great achievement! Running does help add the steps - something we have both got out of the habit of doing. We are both mindful that we need to do a little more strength and flexibility work which will probably be one of my 2025 goals but as you say so much harder to do with any consistency when travelling
Thank you - for most parts in the summer our day sacks are pretty light with a drink, food, small first aid kit, compass, power bank, waterproofs, if we think we might need them, sunscreen. We generally use OS maps app and all trails for navigation. In the winter we add in a small emergency shelter a flask of coffee, spare warm clothes layers, gloves, hat etc and head torches. Not sure if that covers the 10 essentials but we get by. We are pretty risk averse and don't go out too far if the conditions are bad! Richard spends hours watching different gear and hiking videos too 😂
Definitely recommend a Garmin watch as it makes step counting especially easy. As for achieving 10,000 daily I’d recommend a wee dog - can’t avoid those wet and windy days then. Currently on 6,061,835 for 2024. Like the Everest challenge idea so that’s on my to do list for 2025. All the best to both of you for the festive season 🎉
I have used a Garmin watch for a good 8 years now and love how easy they are to give me some simple data on my walks and hikes. Our Garmin instinct watches are great tracking our cycle rides as well. Wow over 6m steps a year is incredible! I am on just over 4m - but as you say - having a dog does ensure you get out in pretty much all weathers 🤣 Have a great holidays season 🎄
Nice to see you Jackie doing wellness Thursday. I love walking we do a bit( but I have plantar fasciitis)😢 I try to swim twice a week 😊 It’s great to be outside. 😊
Thank you for this inspiring video. A health condition has made me scale down my activity expectations but I still get out in nature most days and my mini adventures keep me mentally balanced and give me a sense of achievement. I shall now think of them as one more step up the mountains that I love so much and I’ll leave the actual climbing to you 😂
Thank you for your kind words - the mental health aspects of being in the outdoors are equally as important to me as the physical so just getting out each day is a great habit to have. We had a lovely walk around the hills in Settle today which was so good for the soul and it gave me another 370m of elevation and 12,000 steps 😊🥾
This was definitely the motivation I needed today - I live in beautiful Dorset so plenty of hills and no excuses!! Could you recommend some decent walking shoes/boots please?
Thanks Diane - you live in a lovely part of the country to get out exploring. Walking shoes are a strange thing - for most of the year I prefer to use trail running shoes as they are light and have a good grip on them (I have cheap nike ones from an outlet store at the moment). When it is wet and muddy I use my winter walking shoes which are leather - I am not sure what make - it was an obscure brand from our local outdoor shop but I had tried on loads and these were the comfiest. I do really like the scarpa and Merrel walking shoes and my current walking shoes are Asolo which is a European brand. Richard swears by La Sportiva walking shoes and has the same ones every year!! When looking for new shoes we do spend quite some time trying on lots of pairs first. Sorry, probably not much help on specifics of shoes
@earlyretirementwanderlust how kind of you to take the trouble to respond so fully. Thank you so much. I'll check out all the options and try on lots!!
The challenge I set myself is to walk 1000 miles per year. I don't track every walk that I do, but I've just looked at my 2024 Strava roundup and it seems that I've done 2 Everests!
I just have the free version - on my laptop version it gives me a monthly or weekly tally that I can sort by elevation - I just add up the totals at the end of each month 🥾
Loved this go Jackie! 💕
Thank you ☺️

You can also download the strava app on your phone which will track your elevation and distances but not particularly footsteps x

Great stuff. Well done Jackie.
Thank you! It felt very strange doing a vlog without Richard 😬 Like being a school teacher again 🤣

Hi! I'd love to see what you pack for your day hikes. Do you include the 10 essentials? I really enjoy watching gear videos!

Hi 😊 do you pay for Strava or use the free version. Just wondering how much manual adding up you do, and how often 😅
I just have the free version - on my laptop version it gives me a monthly or weekly tally that I can sort by elevation - I just add up the totals at the end of each month 🥾
@earlyretirementwanderlust ah OK, I may need to try and see how you do that. Thank you 😊
