Chewing cane was the energy drink of my generation. Sit in the shade with some good cool well water and take a break, even better if there was an apple tree around.
Aa neighbor just bought an old cane mill. We cut a bunch of cane, and harnessed his 2 kids to the pole, because we have no horses. The first batch of cane syrup was good, and each batch got better and better. We planted in a lot of new rows too. No end of YUMMY in sight.
Gos, I haven't had cane in years. It was always a treat when I was growing up and so excited the day my daddy came home with a new can of syrup. He would help a friend at the mill, hot biscuits and cane syrup. Nothing better.
I gather leaves every fall and mulch the strawberry plants. Come spring I have beautiful Strawberries. The one year I didn't put leavesthey died and had to start all over again. Danny, this is a very interesting video. Up here in my area we can't grow sugar cane so I don't have any experience in growing it. I would have thought the new planting stalks would have been inserted into the ground vertically. But I see you are laying them in the trench. Thanks for making this video! OAG

Back when I was a kid in the city in So. Calif, we had the pleasure of getting some cane and my Mom whom is originally from Mississippi, cut them up I had a ball. My brother not so much, I walked around for hours nibbling like a goat.

ahhh, as kids, we would sneak down to an old mans garden and steal his turnip roots. skin them with our teeth, LOL. first time I saw his sugar cane field, I thought I was in some kind of fairy tale land. they looked huge and cleared out underneath. we could make mazes in those things. then I tasted it :))) my dad now owns that land and its where we garden. there is even a small building on the property where they used to process the cane. I have now got to grow some sugar cane.
A video just popped up on my video side panel of commercial sugar cane planting in Louisiana. It was fascinating to see how what you did by hand was being done by huge farm machinery.

Your soil is loose and sandy, but ours is clayey. I just got some cuttings in the post, and am trying to get some tips on planting. If we just turned the top soil and added some compost, would they grow? And if a cutting with say three to four nodes is planted straight into the soil, would I then have to separate those plants that grow from that one piece, or just leave them to grow. Cut mine down last yr weeks before frost, say 6 nice canes, buried sections few inches deep loam, some with additional few inches of old wood chips. Maybe should have saved some in refrigerator for spring? I only dug up one half way yesterday, it showed no growth. W luck maybe some will sprout, they would not have froze under ground, maybe just rotting or I'm too impatient IDK. Also wondering--as original clump just coming back to life, can I break off (cut off I guess) one cane to propagate? Very pleased w 'thriving on neglect' of this particular sugarcane (lost all of another type), fairly drought tolerant, farther N. inland Commifornia 110 F plus, dry summer days don't phase it.
Each knot will make about a dozen stalks if it has room so I plant only the knots about 3 to 4 feet apart. There is enough cane on those rows to plant a field 5 times the size. When it sprouts you can throw a big handful of triple 13 on each sprout at last plowing then again in September and have more cane than you know what to do with when you harvest Thanksgiving.
So you cut each knot separately and plant on the knots, not the stretch of cane in between? I'm trying to figure out what the best way to do it would be :)
Cut between the knots with a hatchet on a stump and bury a knot every 4 ft and they'll have room when they come up to put on a dozen or more stalks. l put a lot of fertilizer on cane when it's growing and it loves it. I put a large handful of triple 13 on every hill three times a year. So much that it kills the weeds but the cane grows big and sweet. If you lay the stalk in the ground it'll come up too close to grow big with many stalks.

Thanks to Old Alabama Gardner, I miss being in sugar cane farm from Pakistan, extremely sweet and juicy, tall and fat. I don't remember planting as around planting season we were in the city and only enjoyed harvesting and then putting the dried root balls and some stalks that are no longer a fodder for livestock on fire. We used canine and premolars to peel the bark off and chew it and no sticks but we cut them in rounds. Wild boars love them but destroy fields upon fields. It's been almost 25 year since I had a real sugar cane, we do get them here in Calgary but dried and juiceless sticks and bottled juice from Philippines.
Good stuff right there -- a luxury of the south! How do you keep it watered? Some of the cane growers close to us put it on drip irrigation and leave it running 24/7 until harvest.

96geometro that's the way you do it buddy. No knife, use canine and premolars to peel the bark off and chew it. We used to cut them in small rounds instead of sticks.
That's how I eat them. Chew into the cane. The fibrous outer layer is inedible, but half a mm in is, so strip that with your teeth. Then there's the tree bacon layer, the cambium, it's the layer between the bark and the plants inner. I eat the whole lot. Always have. It's good ruffage. Makes a man out of you. Nothing says manly like shitting pure silage!
Now I know how to plant the chewing cane when I get it from you.I also saw it can be sprouted in a bucket of water then in a bucket of dirt to get some roots growing.I may try both ways.How long before the cane goes bad on me? Danny and Wanda, I am a subscriber with an interesting project: I would like to use sugarcane as a privacy fence and wanted your opinion. I live on Merritt Island which is located on the East coast of Florida near Cape Canaveral, so it never freezes. The area I am planting is 270 feet long by 6 feet wide. The 6 foot wide portion is on a 40 degree upward slope. The area is partially shaded and the soil is mostly sand. I would like to plant two or three tight rows so it is dense. I plan to use continual drip irrigation. I do not plan to harvest it, so it will remain as a continually growing natural barrier/wall. My questions are: 1) Is this a reasonable expectation for an inexpensive, natural wall? 2) How tall might it get? 3) Without annual harvesting, will it continue to remain standing and look like sugarcane as I am hoping? Where do you get the sugar cane to plant? Here in East Tx, there is no place to get it. Sad, because when I was little girl lots of folks grew and made syrup.
I don't think I ever remember eating candy sticks, but lord I sure did get in trouble cause I would sneak into the rhubarb, and eat it. I love raw Rhubarb. If I get it now, I like to add salt.
Jon Koehler it's been 25 year since my last good bite on sugar cane. We can't grow them here and what we get from stores (sometimes) are dried juiceless sticks.

Those tops would be good to weave with. I do that with willow branches and flexible branches

I'm growing some cane here in central Florida.

When is the best time to fertilize the cane? And what's the best fertilizer, in your opinion?
A good all around npk fertilizers for plants is great, but mostly it uses Nitrogen. Fertilize it when it is young, about a foot tall.

Yes it would make a fence and if it doesn't freeze, it should keep growing. It will get 12 to 15 feet tall.

It is watered by the rain. We usually get enough rain for it to grow and produce well.

Does each node only produce one cane or does it send up multiple?
Stripping the leaven is way way way faster if you cut down the whole stalk then run the stalks through a 1 1/4 galvanized pipe "T"

What do use for feteralizer. In Belize the burn their fields for the ash.
Where do you get the sugar cane to plant? Here in East Tx, there is no place to get it. Sad, because when I was little girl lots of folks grew and made syrup.

I don't think I ever remember eating candy sticks, but lord I sure did get in trouble cause I would sneak into the rhubarb, and eat it. I love raw Rhubarb. If I get it now, I like to add salt.

Jon Koehler it's been 25 year since my last good bite on sugar cane. We can't grow them here and what we get from stores (sometimes) are dried juiceless sticks.

@@DeepSouthHomestead From Lil Giant just made deposit in 4-1/2 acres in FL. Was an orchard but most of trees gone. Is that big enough for sugar cane? Would still want large garden. MIGHT be able to get 3 acres more.
Question i have about 6 sugar cane plants i might have put them too close to my property line and we are getting ready to put wood fence up so im wondering if i dig them up will they be affected too much they are about 4 or 5 months old is their root system too deep
