I’ve been looking everywhere for sugarcane for 2 years, asking at every grocery store, visiting ethnic markets and farmer’s markets and finally found some the other day for $4 a stock. I bought the last 5 they had, lol. The cane I got was interesting looking, some is solid green and the rest is purple with green stripes on it.
Small heart problem when DTG says ..this is my last video, but then the smirk happened.. whew.. yay, let’s talk about sugar cane. Going to our fruit stand again to see if they have the walking size poles of sugar cane. TY for the tips!
@@Chuchonation You'll see the red in it. Real easy to identify. The taste is off too. Don't let it spread to your good sugarcane. Healthy Mexican sugarcane is delicious 😋
I wonder if black plastic mulch on top of regular mulch would work to keep it warm enough for sugar cane to survive in the ground through the winter in Zone 6 or 7. That would be an interesting experiment.
A few years ago I tried to grow sugarcane... for some reason even in a sandy and semi wet area it just never seemed to take very well, always looking very dried out or rusty colored before dying back.😪😪zone 10a, subtropic
@@davidthegood It's that time! I'll be pruning my plants back- dipping in hormone, potting in back to eden mix with Grodan Crutons. Thanks for the sugarcane- I looked since we moved here. Navarre has a sugarcane source after the coming summer.
DTG, have I told you that the horns in your outro are really snazzy? Yeah. I tried growing sugarcane from seed one year. The seeds were all viable and sprouted well. It grew but didn't get really big. I'm not sure why but it didn't come back the next year. So far I haven't found a good source around here for cuttings. The cuttings online are normally really high. So high it makes me ask myself, "Are they high?"
Is cane syrup the same thing as black strap molasses? I really dislike that black licorice flavor of molasses and that is what I imagine the syrup tastes like. What I usually do with plants that have become hard to get is grow some for seed or cuttings or both on a small scale the first year and continue to multiply it each season. Doesn’t take more than a couple of seasons to get it going.
If I can get some next year, I will try in zone 7. I think I can get to Florida around the second week of November next year. I know I will be busy on the first weekend and am marking my calendar for next year I think the wagon wheels will be more fun!
Thanks David and Daisy! I just ordered some cane from Daisy's Etsy store (GoodGardens for anyone who doesn't know.) With my sandy soil will I need to prep the bed with amendments? Do I start watering right away or just let nature do it's thing?
Last year I grew some cane from a local grocery store (I live in Central Florida). So at the end of the season I planted the stalks. This season I hardly had any of the canes come up. I had a total of 3 plants and they didn't do very good. Better luck next time. I guess.
@@davidthegood It'll be thicker and darker than the old molasses. thinking about it brings backs good ol memories, the old popping Johnny running, the wide old belt flappin as turned the mill. good days.
Hmm..planting sugarcane that easy? Although it needs a lot of water, well, the good thing here is we can buy the canes whole at the open air markets, not chopped up into smaller pieces but it'd be a blast to have some sugarcane growing next to my prickly pear patch!😂😛
I’m in zone 9 I plan to plant Oct 1 / 4 inches in the ground will it survive during the winter will it come up in the cold does the winter kill it will it com back? 9 inches between my rows ok
Love your videos ! Your older video about propergating Bougainvillea was very helpful . I can't wait to give it a try. Just a silly question with sugar cane can bamboo be propergated and planted the same way ?
@@davidthegood Thank you for replying back with the helpful tip !! I would love to incorporate a large pot with bamboo. I've always thought that would look so nice ofcourse nicely trimmed and maintained.
I wanna grow this but don't really know what kind of press to purchase to get the juice out. They don't sell old timey ones like I saw on Danny's channel. What are you going to use?
Being in zone 5, I'm probably never going to plant sugar cane (looking into sorghum, however..) but... if you plant the rods end to end, why chop them apart at all? Just wondering.
I bought sugar and from your daughter last fall...planted in a wagon wheel & mulched it. Do/will she have more available soon? I want to try again, 8b zone. Only 1 sprout I saw. Unexpected rabbit got it so now wondering if rabbit got all before I even saw them. Had coyote scat all over mulch too. Not sure what up with that. Need a higher fence, I think. Lol.
I'm curious why the cane needs to be cut up, if it's being laid end to end, anyway? Unless, it's to account for crooked rows or uneven ground? Regardless, I have loved your sugar cane videos. I wonder if we can coax it into growing in the coastal PNW?
Hey D the G I have watched videos that say the best time to harvest sugarcane is between October and the end of November. Since I failed to meet that timeline. Will my sugarcane be worth harvesting in mid February? Thanks for your time.
@@davidthegood that is one of the things I do to help me get through the winter. The other is houseplants. Find em cheap at the big box stores and bring them back to life. then multiply and divide.

People just go to a Mexican grocery store and they sell 8’ long pieces for about $4 . We make a holiday punch so they are all over the stores
Good to know. I was try to find it at asian food market. I will check our local market. Thanks
Nice.
You have to be careful though. Some of it is infected with that red stripe disease.

It's smoother and not nearly as bitter as blackstrap, a bit more sweet corn/caramel flavored, too.
Love!

If you buy the purple aged ones in grocery store is the nodes viable ?

I am sorry. It was also a very cold winter at a few points. She should have some in October or so.
Once you harvest the sugarcane, should you mulch the cut plants, if you want to keep them ? Or are they no good anymore?
Yes, mulch them and they come right back in spring and grow new canes.
So do you leave them in the ground over winter as a perennial? Do you cover them with thick mulch each season?
Yes, though I've skimped on the mulch and still had them come back okay.
I'm curious why the cane needs to be cut up, if it's being laid end to end, anyway? Unless, it's to account for crooked rows or uneven ground? Regardless, I have loved your sugar cane videos. I wonder if we can coax it into growing in the coastal PNW?
It's supposed to stimulate more bud growth.
For the wagon wheel method how wide should the diameter be?
I don't think it matters all that much, but we did about 4-5'
The cuttings you are putting in the trenches, will they grow sugar cane year after year or only for one year?
They'll grow cane for years.
