    The is my very own, custom geometry, steel handmade Howler Deville Gravel bike. Howler was found by my pal Billy Dye. He's worked in the bike industry since his teens and was my go to mechanic when I lived in London.
    I've ridden about 100 kilometres on this bike thus far and it's absolutely perfect. The frame is made of steel and weighs just under 2KG on it's own.

    Amazing build! As i'm getting into the diy world for fixing my newly purchased but used gravel bike I was wondering what products, aside grease, you have used for prepping the steer tube and bottom braket, thank you!(:

    • @Big_Red_Dork
      @Big_Red_Dork ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a local bike co-op/community shop, definitely bring your bike there! There'll be lots of skilled volunteer mechanics and they can answer your questions. My experience is with threaded cup and cone square taper BB's, but basically you just smear a good quality grease on all the components such as threads, tubes where press-fit bearing races are going, etc. You can purchase specialty bicycle "assembly" greases that Are purpose formulated for the task, but a good quality all purpose grease is serviceable as well in most cases. Always read the manufacturer's instructions, and be cautious of anyone trying to steer you differently unless it really makes logical sense to deviate from their indications.
      Good luck on your build! I just finished my first two, some vintage steel road bikes from the 80's that are now somewhere between a gravel/cyclocross/all road touring bike in functionality. Tire clearance is king!

    Part preference will always be subjective, but in my opinion in the Zipp lineup, the XPLR 70s are amazing for gravel!
    Mezcals are also an excellent all terrain choice, and no doubt they contribute to how hit rides..nice supple fast tires!
    Now my critique....I think the experience in a full custom is completely different than a stock frame. As a matter-a-fact, full custom in any material is a completely different experience and feel than a stock equivalent. The tubesets, size and specification is just a completely different level.

      Wrong. GX cassettes last just as long if not longer than X01 as the largest cog (50 or 52t) is steel instead of aluminium. XX1 and X01 chains are leagues better than GX or NX chains as the former have their pins and plates treated. Zero Friction Cycling (only independent tester of chains) has confirmed this. Actually the X01 and XX1 Eagle chains are the longest lasting non-single speed chains on the market.

Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes.3. Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly. The lowest setting is too high. The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off).4. wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell)
