    Do not fool yourselves. There are those masquerading as religious pious that would be more than happy to do much of what is portrayed. There are extremists of every "religion" and religion when organized can be used as a weapon, one of the most powerful ones we have ever known at that. People pick and choose what they wish to follow or at least what they wish to push upon others. We have all seen it. Be wary of people who always use their "faith" as an excuse for wrongs and hate and belittling others. If you go to a church or mosque or temple and they always spread hate and fear you may want to find a new group or worship yourself. Also you are to love everyone not just those who see things your way. So if you feel differently and are not hurting anyone that is also great imo

    As a Christian, let's make one thing clear. The characters in the show are using the parts of the Bible that they want to use in order to justify their own behavior.
    For example; the scene where the two woman are found guilty of having a relationship, the men use a verse from Romans to justify hanging one of them.
    However, in the book of John, when the Jews found a woman committing adultery...they asked Jesus if they should stone her to death like the Bible says to do so in Deuteronomy. Jesus looked at all of them and said, "Let he who has never sinned throw the first stone."
    You have to accept the Bible for its entirety or none of it all. Picking and choosing what you want to follow, like the culture in the show, goes against the religion.

      If you take the bible in it's entirety, then you are condoning behavior like this. The bible tells women to be slaves to their husbands, marry their rapists, have sex with him whenever he says. The bible is an awful book about a petty malovent god. I grew up with it. You don't need this propaganda to be a good person.

    • @emilythompson1746
      @emilythompson1746 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Hmm. I'm not a big fan of either/or answers. My thoughts on theories of causation is that causation is a complex thing. It could be that you're right. It could also be that *both* the Commander and his wife (I love how she doesn't have a title, she's just "the wife", like an appendage) are infertile. Of course, this whole series, for the purposes of moving the plot forward, doesn't really get into how complicated infertility can be, which, I guess, is fair.

    • @audreysmith471
      @audreysmith471 7 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      In the book infertility is a widespread result of nuclear warfare. Smoking probably wouldn't help, but as it's implied the commander is sterile... what does it matter?

      @emilythompson1746 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That's an excellent point. I just found that the smoking went along with the Wife's casual contempt for the Handmaid. And I thought, if the Wife didn't smoke, maybe she wouldn't *need* the Handmaid?

      In the last episode, it seems like she and her husband (going the other way around!) really seemed to try for a baby, and also most births resulted in stillbirths oder the babies died shortly after. The have the lovely name of shredder in the books. I think that Serena had been insterile before and she only picked up smoking quite recently to get rid off her frustrations, stress etc.

    Enraging. Speaking as a heterosexual white male, I can only describe the entire scene as enraging. Enraged that any group could feel so entitled as to force another to bear such horror. I'm about as far from a prude as you could imagine...but I must say I was not able to watch any of the three episodes from "start to finish" without stopping. As I refuse to be one of those people who yell at their TVs as though the characters can hear them, lol it was the only way. To be clear, I'm complimenting the film makers and the actors...I think they were all perfectly cast for their parts. Especially the "Aunt"...watching that smirk drip off her face onto the floor when the ACTUAL Biblical quote was read to her (perhaps realizing deep down she had doomed herself to burn in the same hell she outwardly portrayed as avoiding, etc.)
    I have no idea how the series will go...I never read the book, but I understand there have already been a few deviations for extra plot paths...but I can only hope that one of these women gets to deliver a line on par with "LOOK ON MY WORKS, YE MIGHTY AND DESPAIR" as they hand-detonate a recovered B-61 nuclear warhead because frankly that would be the only thing that I would say passes for "justice" from this scene alone (and I didn't even mention the other horrible things...sorry for spoilers above, BTW, but I just had to express my thoughts somewhere!)
    As a last thought...I would say that I can now understand why people in other situations around the World resort to terrorism when all else seems lost. Watching these smug "Giladeans" walk around...you can't help but smile at the thought of sucking *THEIR* sense of security out from underneath their cushy well-fed a$%es by randomly setting off explosives in places they feel safest.
    i.e. -- Make them mentally and emotionally drained just as they've done to these slaves, etc.

      I feel like sexuality was always meant to be a beautiful expression of love, or, at least, affection, between people. Adding a dynamic of power, where one party is forced, just sucks all the joy out of it, to me. Rape and child prostitution and forced marriage are terrible things in this world. If you have a tough time watching the scenes, please consider supporting a sex trafficking recovery non-profit.

    • @SandraFowler
      @SandraFowler 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I thought the sex scenes in this were on point. I was worried that there would be some attempt to make them sexy despite the very ...brutal subject matter. I thought that not because I didn't trust the filmmakers - I knew that Margaret Atwood was a consultant. I thought that because I'm just so used to scenes involving what can easily be classified as rape* being sexualised because womens' bodies and their sexuality are so frequently considered a commodity.
      But in these scenes - *no one* is enjoying themselves but the Commander - who seems to be attempting to enjoy it as little as possible (or as little as is proper). Limited sympathy for him, though....it's hard to be sympathetic toward the characters with the most privilege and power over others.
      * Offred in the book says that what is happening to her isn't rape because she had "options" (see: Cleaning up toxic waste). However, there's a very good argument to be made about the position of power being held over Offred's head in forcing her hand. If you're telling women that their options are to submit sexually or die - it hardly qualifies as consent. I feel like that's something we can all** agree on.
      **I'm not delusional. I know that there are people who won't agree with this.

    • @emilythompson1746
      @emilythompson1746 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree that it's difficult to feel much sympathy for the Commander, given that the book tells us that he was one of the people who came up with this power dynamic in the first place. If he was just some power-less schmuck who had to go along with the system, it might be different.
      I've pondered, for a long time, the potential differences between forced rape (for instance, rape-in-an-alley-by-a-stranger) and what some sociologists call "survival sex", such as really sad cases where young women in third-world countries are trading their bodies to UN Peacekeepers for jars of peanut butter, because they're malnourished.
      I don't think that either form is right, or rises to the level of what sexuality is supposed to look like. I'd rather view consent as more of on a scale of 1 to 10, rather than as a binary construct, but I'm aware that this poses legal and law enforcement challenges.
      I wouldn't hesitate to say that if the stakes are 'sex or we send you to clean up toxic waste until you die' that this is very much like 'sex or I stab you with this knife I have here'. Coercion where the failure to comply will 100% result in death is absolutely a consent violation, and therefore rape.
      If I'm 18, and I sleep with a soldier because he has a jar of peanut butter, and I don't, though...I don't know, it's not right, but is it right to charge the soldier with rape, if he's under the impression that she's willing? I don't want to judge her choices and call her a prostitute, but stuff like that is just murky. As they say in law school, it's a thin, gray line, and we draw it as best we can.

    • @nucflashevent
      @nucflashevent 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As I wrote above...I just don't see how you could try and force a society like this into being and not expect an eventual rupture. This stuff of having everyone stare at each other...Handmaid's "self-policing" Handmaids (and we can only assume that somehow, somewhere everyone assumes they are being watched by someone regardless of their position, etc.) that eventually someone is going to get tired of living in perpetual fear *and* have the determination to do something about it.
      i.e. -- Problem: You have all the guns, I have none. (BTW, I'm using "guns" as a short descriptor for power in general, etc.)
      Consequence: You feel completely safe because you think I can't hurt you in return.
      Solution: I have to hurt you in a different way that results in you feeling just as powerless as I do.
      *NOW* just looking at the World around us today (places like Syria, etc.) it's perfectly obvious where this line of thinking takes us...I have to shatter your bubble of superiority by somehow making you feel just as vulnerable as I do regardless of how many guns and how much power you have. Point of fact, your "vaunted position" actually works for me as it amplifies anything I'm able to do. Meaning if you think you're "all powerful" and suddenly an explosion goes off in your local neighborhood cafe, without me having to take credit or in any way expose myself, I've just made you question everything you hold dear, etc.
      OH, BTW "Emily Thompson" I followed your advice and did indeed make a donation to such an organisation. I don't know why I had to read it from someone else before thinking of it myself, lol.

      Kathy King actually, quite the contrary. More good has come out of bad thoughts and events than anything. No one does anything when their content. It's when you're reminded of how horrible the world is, you finally get up and do something about it. Margaret Atwood made this novel using research she collected of actual horrible things women have gone through, people need to be reminded that things like this did happen, do happen and can happen any time in the future. You don't push bad thoughts under the rug because they make you uncomfortable,Happy thoughts aren't going to help anyone.

      You change a story to be relevant to the time it is being told. And Yvonne as Serena is far more intimidating than an older woman would have been. There is NOTHING sexy about the handmaids tale.

      Personally I think the cast is perfect. All incredible actors who truly bring their characters to life and give them depth and dimension. The fact that they're good looking doesn't change anything. Nothing in this show is sexy or attractive, it's horrifying and depressing. As it should be.

    There are a number of countries in the Middle East in which women and others are assaulted in various ways, similar to this, with sanction of those in power. But "feminists" in this country, instead of speaking out for the rights of those under assault, prefer to act like this kind of thing's been happening in the USA (ridiculous - the USA has so many freedoms), so they have something to complain about, and completely ignore their sisters abroad who actually DO have their freedoms taken away (forced to wear burka etc against their will, not allowed to drive or go to school if young, etc etc etc.

      I actually really dislike offred. Her selfish actions seem to hurt everyone BUT her! Yes, she’s been reprimanded before but not nearly to the same degree as the people she’s help endanger because of her actions. Of course the entire situation is jacked up but it’s like bruh, you ain’t the only who lost things as a result of this new society. You’re not the only one who lost family/children. You’re not the only one being abused by the commanders wife. You’re not the only one suffering. So quit acting like it c/ others are being brutalized because of you. In her pregnancy she’s untouchable so she says and does what she wants w/o considering how it will affect those around her. Then she cries when others get hurt. Same thing she did with Luke’s wife. I want to finish the story- however her Moss’ character portrayal is unnerving to watch, seriously.

Their taking the word of some preconditioned biblical book thats not even real and making mockery of not only barring children but the music as well. God is good he does not even expect we as women to be with other men then the man we love, married to. If you are not blessed to have children forcing another woman is rape.
