Well attwood did write it about the Americans. Weve thought that country was awful for years. Mainly because we have to be next to them and they bring guns and violence into our country.
Offglenn blowing up the Red Centre will always be my favorite badass handmaid moment. That look of fearless defiance on her face, her arm raised over her head...such a powerful scene!
It's not so much a joke. It's heartbreaking since she's 'developmentally regressed', (possibly) pre, and post Gilead, and Handmaids training and it's trauma. 'disabled', part of why everyone especially Aunt Lydia had a soft spot for her. And she may not be truly able to conceptualise in that moment, that her friends where about (supposed) to actually kill her. That her mind told her she'll get punished with rocks but after that, another day. Like a figurehead of just how bad Gilead was. Aunt Lydia called them girls to infantalise them, but Janine, she was the infantile girl.
Yes! My only disappointment about the character is that the producers failed to her making her returnin' to Gilead after that bombing that splitted her from June. And about June, I know she's the protagonist, but it should share the protagonism among the other characters, like Emily, for example. Emily was too misused.
I think it would have been powerful to mirror when Janine had her first baby taken from her, dropping the rocks and kneeling by her in a “protective”circle. The guards would have to end them all or none of them
For the people who are saying that this is fiction, yes I understand that this is a series that was based off a book, but you must understand that the things inside of the handmaids tale is based on things that actually happened at one point and is still happening today in some places. Stoning for example, that's pretty familiar, no? Let's not forget the main issue in this series that is still a great issue today, using God to justify your inhumane actions against those who you deem to be lower than you.
God, in my opinion, is already the invention that was created to justify all evil aso. Which is not to say that there is no higher power. But the Buddhists, for example, have simply not given a character to this power that serves the ego and makes all evil sanctified. An attempt to explain with the scourging and crucifixion to somehow describe how it felt to be enlightened. And what caused it. The Buddhists also hold that there is not just one, but several, and that it is theoretically possible for everyone to reach this state. So quite simple, another place in the world, other cultures, myths, another attempt and corresponding parables to describe what happened.
Yep! People forget what Afghanistan and Iran looked like 40-50 years ago vs what they look like today. It is 100% possible for a "civilized" society to fall completely back into dark-ages style zealotry, theocratic tyranny, and barbarity. Let the wrong ones have too much power and this can be very real.
The change is slow…so slow we don’t see it right away. All changes to liberty are ‘justified’ by someone until all liberty is gone. In the U.S.A women’s liberties are being rusticated today…we are walking back in time. All it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing.
I don't like that you gave Emily her credit but not Ofglen. "They" didn't do shit, OFGLEN blew up the Red Center. There was no "they," she was the hero and she alone. Even June was only focused on survival and finding her daughter until Ofglen sent the Red Slave Center up in smoke. Ofglen inspired June to become what she became.
You are 100% right. Of glen was a badass and went out in the most fitting and empowering way possible but j really wish we got to spend more time with her. She is an icon. Period.
I love the badass women of Gilead. One of my favorite scenes is in "Liars" when the Marthas at Jezebel's clean up the room and erase all all signs of Commander Winslow's existence as Offred and Lawrence wait for the Eyes to come for them.

So many layers. You are correct. Then again, for these women having faced bondage, terror, and trauma in the name of religion, I can also see this as their own act of defiance. For just one moment, they seek no approval from a god or a man but create their own justice, acting and speaking for themselves.
You cut it off to early, the part where the volunteer/refugee recognises his daughter and she him, when she's first to get off the flight is very touching.
The only bad thing about Season 5 is that Gilead isn't being carpet bombed and rocketed out of existence by a vengeful world, with escaped handmaids directing the action.
