  • The small Mediterranean island of Cyprus is home to the longest serving peacekeeping mission in United Nations history.
There was conflict within years of it becoming independent from the UK in 1960.
After a Greece-backed coup aimed at merging Cyprus with Greece, Turkish troops occupied the northern side in 1974.
    The island was effectively partitioned.
But it retains peaceful streets and flourishing tourism industries.

Don't rush reunification, dont pressure anyside into anything before their ready, a reunification agreement must come from the island itself and not imposed from the outside, otherwise your just repeating the same error the British made during decolonization.

It is nice that there is a programme about Cyprus talks on Al Jazeera and it is normal that there are some agreements and disagreements in their discussions. However, just one small detail caught my eyes: ISN'T THE PROGRAMME MISSING A REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE TURKISH CYPRIOT COMMUNITY ON THE CYPRUS ISSUE? That guy is not a Turkish Cypriot. With a little bit effort, they could have found an academic from North Cyprus. Is this the journalism quality of Al Jazeera? I thought it was better than this. :)

The only person making sense is the Greek Cypriot in this entire interview. The Turkish guy is probably mincing his words so that he doesn't get shoved in a Turkish Prison for the rest of his life by Erdogan's secret police.
In this day and age, I strongly doubt Greek Cypriots would start pogroms on Cypriot Turks (fully being aware what happened the last time with the approval of the US State Department. I'm talking to you Henry Kissinger).
The Greek Cypriot is right, any peaceful harmonization between the two communities needs to be a slow, methodical and progressive process (without outside interference) and not rushed just because Nuland and foreign gas companies want it this way. That's right, it's all about the Oil and Gas, stupid!
Why would, after so many years, both parties sit around the table to unify two groups of people that are distinctly, culturally, religiously very different? If it isn't for the Leviathan Gas Field in the area, under the exclusive ownership of .....
I cannot see a federation of two very different people co-exist: one culture that lives and functions based on Judeo-Christian Western Values with a sense of stability perceived by the world and the other under the Caliphate of a power hungry Megalomaniac and his repressive regime that emanates a sense of instability, which is perceived this way by the world.
Turkish Cypriots are isolated because of successive Turkish Regimes that had/have and will have control over them. It doesn't seem they have much say about their own future and it's probably worse now then before with the presence of Turkish migrants.
Just for example, would a rotating presidency, benefit Cypriots or Turkey should a Turkish Cypriot take the helm? Most Cypri-Greeks believe that he/she won't be making decisions to benefit Cyprus and hence, their fears are justifiable. The same goes with a foreign yet hostile army on the Island; how could a Greek Cypriot President imposed the constitution of its country on the Turkish Occupying Army if political strife radiates over a delicate situation? No matter how well the intentions are, sooner or later, the same events of 1963 will regenerate.
It simply cannot work unless the 30,000 strong Turkish army along with the 10 reps of the Greek Armed forces leave the island...and give Turks Minority status with all constitutional rights. I believe that goes with what Europeans (and not those unelected officials in Brussels) would like to see in the region.
What the "powers that be" will decide is a NATO force to police the island comprising of many European members including Turks, Canadians and Australians, etc. in lieu of the Turkish Occupying Forces. That's the only plausible solution I can see that would satisfy, albeit grudgingly, both parties.
    My 2 cents...

How can Turks be so opposed to Israeli occupation of East bank and Gaza when they themselves are occupying a nation and even settling it with Turks?
Greeks need to get the entire island and give minority status to Turks living in it.

NO The island belongs to the Cypriots. Cypriots are NOT Greek and are NOT Turkish they are Cypriots, this is something the rest of the world can't seem to get their heads around.
The entire of the Island demanded independence from the British many years ago and Cyprus became an independent Cyprus meaning Cypriots are neither Turkish nor Greek.
A passport issued in Cyprus is a EU passport with nationality "Cypriot" NOT Greek Cypriot or Turkish Cypriot or Turkish or Greek. I hate it when people try to say Greek-Cypriot or Turkish-Cypriot, neither of these exist you are either a Cypriot or you are Turkish or Greek thats it.

Fireicer Cooper I am all for a unified Cyprus - independent from both Turkey and Greece. I am not suggesting it being annex by Greece. Greece, as is, has many issues to deal with, also regarding the identity of the peoples living there - its up to them. How about the Turkish forces retreat and remove the borders separating the areas. Who in their right mind would think that the Greek Cypriots would attack the Turks? If they tried , Turkey would step in , even the EU would stop any conflict. So remove the borders within Cyprus and let the people live under a democratic system , not one of division of the people into Turks or Greeks but as Cypriots - one and all.

The Republic of Cyprus was established in 1960 and it lasted only for 3 years. Back then, you were right, both nationality was considered as Cypriot as a unified identity. Nevertheless, the Greek-Cypriots wanted to rule the whole island and slaughtered the Turkish Cypriots by the help of Greece till 1974. Turkey had to send army to not only to protect the Turkish-Cypriots, but to make a ceasefire and it happened after 11 years of war.
Considering this fact, it is normal for people to divide the island identity as Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.
I also want unified federation to build up, but no one can argue why Turkish army came to the island. It is not an invasion, it is to make a ceasefire and protect both sides.
      Sincerely,
      A Turkish Cypriot

It is clear that Turkey does not want to see the reunification of Cyprus. Turkey does not actually care about the Turkish Cypriot minority, instead Turkey wants to continue occupying the northern area of the Republic of Cyprus, and importing all these illegal Turkish setlers who have outnumbered the Turkish Cypriots. If the Greek and Turkish Cypriots were left alone, and Turkey withdraws it's occupation troops from Cyprus, then the Cyprus problem would be solved and reunification established. Republic of Cyprus ID cards are already there to be used by the Turkish Cypriots and as members of the European Union. Plus, the Republic of Cyprus is extracting gas/oil which will be of great benefit to all Cypriots in a united Cyprus.

The only reason for dividing this island was politics.
Muslim and Christian Cypriots lived in peace for centuries it was only when the British, Greeks and Turkey came along and disturbed the peace on the Island.
It was all politics and nothing more.
Turkish and greek cypriots do not exist. You are either Cypriot or Greek or Turkish, no such thing as Turkish-Cypriot or Greek-Cypriot. The only reason for this being like this is because of Britain and Turkeys intervention. 60 years ago everyone lived in peace.
The solution is to remove the ideology of Turkish-cypriot and Greek-cypriot and just accept all Cypriots as Cypriots no defining or dividing language and allow Muslims and Christians to practice their faith in peace. Cyprus does not implicate Sharia law and never will.

    • @FireicerCooper
      @FireicerCooper 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes and that is where the problem started. The British bought the island from Turkey over 100 years ago and then gave it back to the native Orthodox Christians because the Cypriots wanted independence. Then a Greek general wanted the island to be joined with Greece which is crazy because Cyprus wanted it's independence but then wanted to be joined with Greece. Talk about a mashup, The Greek language we speak maybe similar to Greek form Greece but it is different ever so slightly.
Anyway the days of political ownership with Greece and or Turkey is over. The Island is called Cyprus, is independent and over 80% of it's population is Christian and always has been as from the year 431 Orthodox Christianity was born on the Cyprus island. That is why it is predominantly Orthodox Christian.

      nanda
You have it wrong. The UK or should we say Her Majesty the Queen of England bought the whole island from Turkey for a very large amount of money many many years ago.
They then began to mine and pillage the land and its natives to which after allot of arguing after world war 2, the British gave the island back to the Cypriots and put Magarios in charge which mainland turkey got very upset about.(why is a good question, British owned it it is up to them what they do with it)
So today the reality is the Island is independent from Turkey, Greece and Britain and it has nothing to do with Turkey any more what so ever.
Strange how now natural gas has been found Turkey wants a slice of the cake. Sorry Turkey but you sold it freehold to the British who have given it back to the Cypriots who have now made the island of Cyprus their home and rightfully so. Cyprus is a EU member sovereign state and Turkey is illegally occupying another country to which it clearly has no claim to what so ever.
How would you like it if a foreigner walked into your house that you had bought freehold and then kicked you out and claimed it as their own property without paying you a penny for it?
Is that behaviour of a civilized society in the 21st century you stand for?
I thought in the Muslim SHARIA law thieves had their hands chopped off.
And for the record it was Greece who wanted the island and was selling the Cypriots the promise of military protection from Turkey because Turkey vetoed Cypriot membership with NATO.
Cyprus is an independent country, There is only one nationality in Cyprus and that is Cypriot regardless of faith although it is a predominantly Christian island faith has never been a division issue, only Turkey has been the divider.
I like to think Turkey has become far more civilized over the past few years but it seems some of it's population still live in the past.

Fireicer Cooper why u mentioned sharia law? No one intends to implement it. Stereotypical ignorance...

    • @FireicerCooper
      @FireicerCooper 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Because Cyprus was purchased by the British and was then given back to the Cypriots who are the native population on the island. Turkey has no claim what so ever on the island, it does not belong to Turkey and neither is it's resources so by Turkey being their they have stolen half the island and hence illegally occupying land that does not belong to them.
As i have said before, there is no such thing as a Turkish Cypriot or a Greek Cypriot. You are Cypriot or you are Turkish or you are Greek.
The proof is in the pudding, Cypriots fly the Cypriot flag and sing the Cypriot national anthem. The so called Turkish Cypriot illegally occupying the north of the island fly the Turkish flag and sing the Turkish national anthem, it really does not take a brain surgeon to figure out the truth of the matter.
My point is it seems that sharia law has double standards, one rule for the peasants and another for the rulers.

    • @kibrisliboy2013
      @kibrisliboy2013 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Fireicer Cooper l still didnt understand what Turks has to do with sharia law. We are secular people.
Also do you think that there would be peace in Cyprus if Turkey didn't intervene?

Fine give us moneys worth of our land, houses and properties and we can ignore the 50 years that you lived there occupying a house and a country that doesn't belong to you rent free, tax free, water free, electricity free. You see most Cypriots will forgive the killing of their family etc but still you occupy a property that could help fund the house of their children or a better life. Not to mention you occupy 40% of land on an island that you be used for agriculture number 1 reason for a self sufficient society to be able to support it self and not depend on anyone for food. And now we found oil and natural gas and you want as fast as possible to find a solution and restart negotiations again oh how convenient. "Eshi anggouri" google it
