What's got me most excited about the new government is the pledge to take radical action on climate change, in the form of maintaining maximal profits for the fossil fuel megacorporations.
I laughed, then I damned near cried. How fucking depressing. Labour have no intention to change anything in reality. They do what their donors tell them. You expressed the utter futility of UK politics at the minute quite beautifully. I have subscribed!
Ah, here I thought "oh, cool, a new Larry & Paul video!"... And it's tomorrow! No! I can't wait.... Almost as much as I can't wait for the next general election. (Sits and sips tea while tapping fingers on table).
To be fair they should have very similar policies, given they have the same electorate and the same problems to solve. The electorate rebels if a party goes full on hard left (Corbyn) or full on hard right (Rees Mogg et al). The point of a two party system is not so much to offer radical alternatives but to prevent a one party arrangement where they cease to be accountable. There are plenty of examples around the world for anyone who fancies it.
A very interesting point, but if the two-party system shows itself to be incapable of solving those problems, and both become beholden to small but vocal populist "kingmakers", where do we go?
They're completely different! One party likes to call a spade a spade (unless it's a shovel, and then they'll call it a shovel). Whilst the other party calls a shovel a shovel (unless it's a spade, and then they call it a spade)
The Scottish Family Party are bonkers horrific, though thankfully a gazillion miles from gaining seats... I hope... FFS PEOPLE, DON'T LET THEM NEAR POWER... OR SHARP THINGS OR HOT THINGS OR.... NOOOOOOO!!!
The Tories and their online trolls will try to push that line and sway voters, but you only have to look at the NHS to see an example of the vast differences between Tories and Labour. Labour left us with the best public healthcare system in the world, and in 13 years under the Tories it has been looted and smashed. We now have 8 million people waiting for hospital treatment, hundreds of thousands unable to find an NHS dentist or get timely treatment, people dying whilst waiting 6 hours and more for an ambulance, or waiting for urgent treatment on a hospital floor or corridor, routine waits of a month to see a GP in person, routine surgeries like hernia repair being denied to older patients because of budget constraints- the list goes on and on, and on. Labour are reluctant to over-promise because unlike the Tories, they will be held to account for their promises by the media. Also the country is almost broken, and they dont know yet how much can be spent on repairing it. And its getting worse, because the Tories are now set on a course of ruining the economy and over-borrowing (Hunt's latest budget will be largely paid for by the next government), in an effort to salt the earth and damage Labour's first term in office- which is something I don't think has ever been seen before in UK politics. I would put it this way- if you think there is a decent chance you might need NHS care in the next 5 or 10 years, you better vote Labour to give yourself a chance of getting treatment.
They are not the same. Those who want you to think they are tend to be the third parties who hope to poach your votes. Labour and the Tories, at least, are as different as night and day. Remember: you have not seen Labour in government for nearly 14 years.
New Labour was often derided as being far closer to the Tories than any previous labour government, and the only evidence we have for how Labour will be if they get elected again is the policies they say they are going to implement and their comments and actions. Starmer seems averse to just about any traditional Labour party concern, such as being aligned with workers striking for better pay and/or conditions. I'm not going to vote Labour on the off chance that they will be MORE radical than their pre-election promises, parties are usually less ambitious once they get elected. I don't believe in 'tactical voting' i.e. voting for the party you think has a chance of beating the one you hate, I am going to vote for Greens if they stand in my area. If enough people do that then who knows, the incumbent party may feel threatened enough to hold a referendum on something like radically improving the environment or making society more equitable, then we'd have another seismic shift like Brexit (except it would be a GOOD change).
@@robertprice2148 You have had fourteen years to understand and Brexit. It seems impossible to explain simple logic to some people, to quote Bob Dylan “It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe”
Timely recommendation. In other news, Tories set out 3 more election promises: all women to stay at home to cook, clean and have 1 baby every 2 years; anyone earning less than 60K per annum must always doff their cap to their betters; children will be routinely whipped after compulsory church on Sundays. Big ideas for a better Britain.
How can anything be worse than the Tories right now. Seriously, I’d take a left wing hedgehog wearing a painfully fitted gimp mask over this lot. Jus sayin..

Well yessss, although this is really a video aimed at expressing our dire need for PR - first thing there is to get the Tories out. However we do that.
To give Starmer his due I think he is a more honest politician with more scruples and useful experience than Sunak, I've come to see the latter as a rich bloke in awe of big corporations and desperate to grab onto any soundbite or madcap policy to hold onto power. Listening to him claim a few months ago that he was a man who didn't think only in the short term etc. (about a week after relaxing the law on when internal combustion engine cars will be allowed to be sold) lowered my opinion of him even more, because in my eyes he is blatantly the character he was railing against in that speech.

Nah, this is actually kinda infuriating. Yes, there are problems galore with the entire political system, but the "they're all the same" mentality is utter shit. The differences between Labour and the Tories are stark, and that attitude *only* benefits the Tories.
@@archvaldor We can see over the course of decades that spending on healthcare is higher under Labour than Conservative; in fact it drops off a cliff each time the Tories come back to power. Healthcare waiting lists accordingly rocket upwards under the Tories, both in the numbers of people waiting and in how long they have to wait. Privatisation increases under the Tories, and the related services predicatably deteriorate as a result (see England's literal rivers of shit for example). More houses are built under labour than the Tories. While Labour (and every other major party) propose actually taxing energy companies on their eye-watering, unearned windfall profits, the Tories allow them to continually boast those record-breaking profits while increasing everyone's energy bills. Oh, apparently crime's went down...unless you count fraud...which has become the number one crime. The amount of fraud just relating to Covid furlough and PPE schemes amounts to tens of billions of pounds. Sunak has refused, both as chancellor and prime minister, to chase it up...because it leads back to Conservative MPs/Peers, their friends, family and donors. Even in terms of inidividual people, the Tories are of a singular quailty. Rememebr the "Expenses Scandal"? Remember some of the most egregious cases, like claiming for the upkeep of a moat, a "duck island", or heating of stables? Yup, Tories. It's not even that Labour and Conservatives are starkly different, it's that the Conservatives stand apart from *every* other major party.
