Maybe thats the plan "Lets give this brutal prisoner this weapon that can kill him ;D"
Flails are not a difficult weapon to use, especially compared to swords. I don't understand where that idea comes from. If you're not overswinging, you will not hit yourself, pretty much ever, but if you're overswinging a flail, you'd overswing any weapon anyway. You don't have to aim at unarmored parts of the opponent, and you don't have to care about edge alignment. Flails are associated with prisonners because it's an improvized weapon commonly made in prisons (with a belt and a lock), which speaks volume about how easy and natural it is to use.
@@CatharDameth That's a fair point. As long as you keep the weapon in constant motion away from _you,_ you'll be fine. From there you can keep clubbing your opponent. In reality, a long-hilted mace would work just as well, and honestly would look better in-game, but I get why they'd want to include something as iconic and unique as a flail
Might be giving the devs too much credit, but I always saw that as intended symbolism. Their trailer even says of the flail, "as dangerous to the wielder as it is to the enemy". That could also apply to conscripted criminals as well, when you think about it.
Idk if this was mentioned at all, but his "flail" is the worst offender in terms of being unrealistic. The chain section longer than the handle of the weapon (biggest no-no of making flails) which means he's going to break at his fingers even using the thing. Not only that, but the handles are too bulky and spiky to be held effectively, too. It's honestly stupid.
These are definitely a lot of good points. I brought up a few of the spiky handles but luckily there are a few that reasonable and don't have any spikes at all (although now that I think about it, conquerors obsession with chains and spikes is a little worrying lmao). The flail heads are, for the most part, too large in my opinion. But I decided to not make a note on that due to it already being a long enough video as is, and because we also have a bit of historical depictions of them that size if not a bit larger. But definitely a solid point to mention nonetheless. Lastly for chain size, I disagree actually. The chain definitely might be an issue if you aren't wielding it properly. I believe Matt Easton talks about it in the Flail videos I linked in the description, I'd recommend watching those for more info. One thing that he states that length is not just safe, but in other culture with similar flail type weapons, there have been even longer chains. And I agree that if you were to keep the flail in motion and away from your body, it wouldn't be harmful to the user. Thank you for watching and adding to the discussion!
I think also when it comes to the flail the psychological factor is also relevant. I mean a dude with a flail terrifying. A ball with spikes or a heavy weights in general on a chain doesnt really look appealing. Nice video btw! really informative.

Fantastic work as always, I was wondering when you'd be back! As for the content of this video, I had a few things to add - though they'll likely be old news to anyone who knows their stuff. Firstly, one of the images that you are using for one handed medieval flails comes from the Morgan Bible to my knowledge (the one with a disc guard and metal shaft) in a scene that is rife with mechanically bizarre contraptions and non-existent weaponry. While this could be interpreted as evidence that flails existed, I find it very unlikely that it's anything resembling an accurate representation of them. That isn't even to mention that the flail's head is the size of the wielder's - in which case it is more likely it would weigh 100 pounds rather than the 1-2 that you'd want out of a mace head (unless it was hollow, I guess). If your point is simply "they existed", that would be fair enough given the pictorial representation. However, I'm still skeptical about any speculative use cases people give for them, such as on cavalry in the way you proposed. But I guess that's all part of the fun - trying to understand the most mysterious weapon of the middle ages! Oh, yeah - Ca-val-ry! Not Cal-va-ry! Horses, not Jesus! Can't wait for your thoughts on the armor. I, too, wrap a bloody chain around my arms in battle. Keep it up!
Damnit, I always have a problem say cavalry for some reason lol. I do it with a lot of words where I mix letters together for some reason. My girlfriend hates when I try to say "anti-climactic", because it comes out as "anti-climatic" as if I think the events that unfold before me effect the climate. One day I'll learn hopefully how to speak the English language lol. As for the one handed flail that has the disc pommel, I don't believe its actually a part of the Mac bible (if this is the one I think you are saying: manuscriptminiatures.com/3975/11000/ ). It appears to be part of "Besançon BM MS.1360 Bellifortis of Konrad Kyeser". To be completely honest, I don't know what that entire manuscript fully entails as if you were to look at the rest of the folios it appears to show multiple different depictions of weapons of war that either existed or were merely just draw as what could be. Maybe even a Medieval version of a thought experiment for them. Now that specific image with the one handed flail does have two other weapons, one which looks like a bill (more specifically an Italian Bill I think, but as I've stated before, polearms are not my specialty) and some sore of glaive weapon that might be another form of a two handed flail. So considering that there is only one more weapon in the picture that might even be considered real, you would be right to assume that this isn't concrete proof by itself that a one handed flail existed. But if we were to combine that with our other sources, we might be able to see a bigger picture. In "BNF Français 2810 Livre des Merveilles", they have not just one, but two depiction of what might be considered a one handed flail. In this image ( manuscriptminiatures.com/4303/9824/ ) we have the rider in the back with what looks like a very basic flail with a wood shaft and no pommel or guard. He is using it with two hands, but just because it's being wielded with two hand I wouldn't consider it a two handed weapon. Although, if you watched the Matt Easton videos I linked in the description (I definitely recommend them if you haven't), then you might've remembered him saying some thing along the lines that the flail is an already much heavier weapon than your average mace. So overall, we might be looking at flails as a whole wrong and maybe there were always meant to be a weapons that might be interchangeable between one handed and two handed. Finally, we get a more detailed depiction in this manuscript ( manuscriptminiatures.com/4303/9819/ ) where we can see that they have a flail with an all metal shaft along with a pommel. This shaft seems much shorter as this one looks like it would be exclusively to be used one handed. Overall the flail, in my honest and candid opinion... is an impractical weapon. I think it takes way more resources to make than your basic mace could do. I think that it doesn't do much uniquely to warrant making them over any other blunt or percussive weapon. And I definitely believe that they were not very well utilized in most medieval militaries. That being said, not anyone could be an artist and make these manuscripts. And I do believe that they had to be some what familiar to the people, and more specifically the artist of that time to warrant putting it down on record. But, to play devil's advocate against myself, art is art. They might've just done it to look cool. After all, Ubisoft decided to go with a flail instead of a mace as well. Humans have a tendency to repeat themselves. We will never truly know what happened back then, unless we were actually there back then. Until someone finds a way to make that happen, we can only make educated guesses based off of what we do know and really all of it could just be conjecture for the most part. Thank you for watching and thank you for taking the time to write an in depth comment on the video. Honestly, if I had all the time in the world, and I knew that others would be willing to watch it, I would definitely make the videos much longer so that I could clearly explain all of my thoughts and discuss my opinions in full. But this video was originally meant to be quick, and it turned into a 20 minute event. God knows what would happen if some told me to draw a video out lol. Anyways thank you again for watching and for adding to the conversation, hopefully I will see you again in part 2!
I’m having trouble finding decent arm armour for conqueror. The default shoulder pads/pauldrons with the chain mail sleeve and leather gloves would be perfect. Unfortunately the chainmail one has big bulky pauldrons.

You put the picture of the crown over the mace head just as I was testing my peripheral vision, so for a brief moment I thought it became an optical illusion.
If the flail is used on horseback, there are a lot of chances that the chain might hit something like a pole of a spear and wrap around said pole, this would result in the conqueror losing the weapon or falling off his horse.
@@carltheincels6641 The stun grenades unfortunately don't an in game model as far as I know, but the crossbow is definitely a great suggestion. I will keep that in mind for the PK video.
