Playa Balandra and El Tecolote | Staying in La Ventana

Sea of Cortez beach camping in Baja California, Mexico! After embarking on a road trip from Los Angeles with a loose goal of reaching Playa Balandra in Baja California Sur, we finally arrived at our destination! After ten days of driving south, stopping at various stunning beach-camping locations, we've now reached the beautiful Playa Balandra!
Most often people stop to stay in La Paz to then drive out to the playa, but we wanted to avoid big cities as much as possible and thus chose La Ventana. Which is actually another 40 minutes south and curves around Maravia’s peak opening into Bahia La Ventana. La Ventana, is yet another hidden gem known for its world-class wind and kite surfing conditions.
Mind you this was during COVID (2020) so we read online that to get into Balandra we needed to be in the first 450 people to arrive. It’s possible they don’t cap off the number of people anymore. But the first day we went, we were too late (10am) and couldn’t get in. 😭 BUT we were absolutely enchanted with the neighboring beach Playa El Tecolote. Its accessibility and family-friendly atmosphere make it a fantastic spot for a day trip, enhanced by its vibrant local culture.
Playa Balandra is said to be one of the most gorgeous beaches in Mexico, or at least in the state of Baja.It is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and powdery white sand, offering a picturesque and serene setting. The area is a protected natural reserve, ensuring its pristine condition and rich biodiversity.
Overall Baja California is a magical place. A sparse and desolate desert landscape, yet rich with life and crystal clear waters, with tons of beach camping and a unique wild wild south culture! Join us as we explore, share some insights, and camping tricks along the way. Our goal is to show you how easy and accessible this kind of vacation is for any nature lover.
