The string of Liz Taylor jokes fired like a semi automatic weapon. Saw her do stand up around this time. She was funny, quick and smart. I'm so glad that I got to see her in person. Love ya, Joan.

She was highly intelligent. I was only a small kid in the UK around 5 or 6 when I first became addicted to Joan my grandfather would go ape shit at things she said, however I always thought she was Wonderful RIP to a truly unique talented person blessed with a smart mouth.
Out to lunch! BO Derek, she turned down the role of Helen Keller because she couldn't remember her lines, classic!!

The next time you hear thunder, that will be The Almighty himself, falling off his throne laughing, as Joan asks "....can we talk?"

I think that Joan Rivers was comparable to Don Rickles in comedic style and delivery, the female version. Each, however, was unique in their own way and Joan was in high gear in her "can we talk" era and it was good that she appeared on "Solid Gold" and got such applause from its mostly young audience. She was as good and popular in 2014 and it would be nice if both she and Don Rickles were still making us laugh. Hopefully, they are making them laugh in The Great Beyond. Their humor was hilarious and got better with age.

She's the only guest on Solid Gold who didn't lip sync (LOL)

ClarenceFisher Actually, almost all the singers on the show sang live (and I ought to know, as I was the musical director).

Matty Finkle Regarding the Christmas specials - there was never even one lip-synched performance. The arrangements I did for each Christmas song were original, unique and individually-crafted for each singer. And, as for all of the rest of the regular episodes, there was an occasional lip-synched performance (maybe one song out of every five or six shows), but everything else was sung live. I always recorded the backing tracks ahead of time with my band for the show, but the singers sang live to the backing track on camera. I then took their vocal tracks back to the recording studio and mixed everything to make the end product sound as close to the sound of a studio recording as possible. I hope that helps clear up any incorrect information that you may have heard or seen.

@@laurabraniganforever-matty7613 Actually, some of Laura's performances on the regular episodes were sung live. We sometimes took her band (or my band) into the studio to recreate the record backing track and then she sang live. That said, there were times when she did lip synch. But, again, lip synching on Solid Gold was rare.

Matty Finkle Sorry, we did almost 500 shows, 30 years ago, so I can’t pick out an exact episode. Anyway, as I said, lip-synching was rare on our show,

@@bigeyezzzzzzz That is what helped make "Solid Gold" such a good show for its time or anytime, that the songs were done live in front of a live studio audience. The musical arrangements were tailored to each singer, be it the hosts or co-hosts who sang live or the performance guests who would sing live as well.
The Solid Gold Dancers performed the dance routines live as well for every episode, not just for the body of the show, but for the end credits roll as well.
I do not know where or when there began to be misinformation about that, as I do not recall during the series run in the 1980s that it was ever stated that the performances were anything other than live or anyone questioning that until the Internet came along and that might have been when and where the misinformation had taken root and spread. As a viewer of the original series, I could feel that the musical performances were live, as there was a live band and a musical director, you, Michael, and that it was live to the end of each episode, aside from any backing tracks, as you state here, and that it was to the end of each episode. That is what helped put the gold in "Solid Gold". The show was one of a kind in the way that it was formatted.
