i live in utah united states, there are two ponds by my house on the mountain side, one is in the shade and about 200 feet higher in elevation closer to the base of the mountain than the other one that isn't in the shade and a little bit farther down the hill. many winters the one up the hill will have 8 - 10 inches of ice and the one at lower elevation won't even cap the entire winter.

Its interesting how it seems the western provinces dont view the whitefish/herring as table fodder.. Here near SSM ontario they are fished for ... Very fussy in the great lakes..

I'm in central Wisconsin in Steven's point. Does anyone know a good area within an hour that has some big walleye? I heard the ones in the Wisconsin river are mostly small. Also I never have luck with flathead minnows, is there a better bait you have success with? That river does great for channel catfish on chicken liver... just never the walleye I am told are migrating through.
I gotta make my way to Wekusko. I have fished The Pas, Cranberry Portage, Flin Flon, Jan Lake and Pelican Narrows but Jay until you and Aaron started fishing it, I had not heard a lot about it. It is definitely on my Radar now :)

What kind of reels do you use? And do you use any cold weather lubes? Is there a better braid to use in the ice?
I use is mostly Shimano stradics ranging from 1000 to 3000 size mostly. As for braid 5-10lb powerpro

Yup, the 38 m inch “true grit” is a very similar action. Awesome big walleye rod. Good for rattle baits and bigger spoons.
