@@phoebezhang2299 I learnt about it from one of my lecturers at uni during my vet sci course. I can’t find his original paper but they did write a news article about it. It’s called “Free range hens may not be ‘happier’ than caged.” By Dr Downing. The news article is from ABC News
Pasture raised eggs taste better than the others. I’m 50 years old and when I was a kid we had eggs delivered from a local farm. The pasture raised eggs taste like the eggs from my childhood.
I preferred brown Free Range eggs to the regular ones because I found them a lot tastier than the regular eggs, and in general it seemed the darker the yolk was the more flavor it had. This video made me give pasture raised a try. I compared them side by side and holy crap you could see the difference the moment you cracked it. The yolk looked a lot different in color and it had so much more flavor.
Being out and roaming makes a big difference. But the bird makes more of a difference. I feed all my birds the same thing. Some have different preferences than others and even more so when they are finding their own food. And some eat more than others. Of my birds my favorites are from Orpingtons. Just a light pink colored egg, yokes not very dark but great flavor. My best comes from Copper Marans. Dark brown eggs, the darkest yokes and a smooth creamy texture and flavor unlike any other I've ever tasted. If you ever run across them, try them out and see if you agree.
We shouldn't buy regular eggs so that the chicken get free and buy pasture raised because the hens or chicken aren't experiencing hell ❤ They deserve freedom too 😢 Hope everyone gets my message.
The interesting thing about "free range" is that the USDA defines it simply as "having access to outdoor space" but not how much or for how long. A farmer could literally open and shut the door to the coop faster than they can react and it would still count.
@@Ouch-fu7slI honestly wish it would be that simple. There are "farms" that just like in the video, and outside of that "farm" there are no grass... because of the machineries, the trucks, the warehouses,... basically no space to grow some grass for the chickens because they want to maximize the space and profit. But most are roaming freely. A healthy chicken will eat worms, bugs, grains, all kind of stuffs. The eggs will have much better nutrients in them. Much more than factory feeds them.

Regular and Pasture Raised are the only ones which do what their labels say without having a "loophole". Regular is just eggs, made in the most efficient way possible. Pasture Raised are eggs that are made in the most humane way possible.
You're incorrect. Pasture raised hens have significant biosecurity risks, due to being exposed to the outside world with no safeguards against disease. They (and their eggs) are more likely to carry diseases. The best system is what's called CA SEFS Compliant system. It's big cages, about the size of a king size bed. This is best because it removes the feces from the cage with conveyer belts under the cage. Cage Free, Pasture... These hens are kept in their own feces, which they often eat. Which can contaminate the eggs. The guy who made this video should spend time on an egg farm.
@@NebulaKat345Hey now, that's not fair. You at least uh... Get better food? I mean it's usually not that much better, if even different, but... I mean at least you get leg room. That's worth up to 2000 dollars to me. If you're a multimillionaire with way too much money.

Buy eggs at a local farmers market if you can, they're usually cheaper than eggs at supermarkets because they don't need to be transported from far away, and I fond they taste better since they are from small local farms and are normally pasture raised.
The eggs at the farmers market are definitely the most expensive eggs available in my town. Some reason the best priced eggs are the farm eggs sold at the butcher. But the meat there is priced out of my budget and I don't want to go in just for eggs.
If you have space, get a chicken. They're fairly low maintenance, the only nuisance I've noticed is that in some places they get preyed on very easily @@moringsdaughter
pasture raised can also mean that they are still in a cage but the cage has no bottom and is on grass, I went to a farm once and they had big with some space to roam that they moved around so that the grass could grow, they do this because it stops them from being eaten by birds of prey
By cage do you mean like a fenced in area with a roof or a coop? I have pasture raised chickens, the only cage they have are the coops they're put in at night so the raccoons, possums, foxes, snakes, etc don't get them (I'm in a forested area so there's a whole lot of wildlife) and my dogs protect them from birds
As a chicken owner who loves their chickens like family, i cry over this a lot, im not even vegan or anything but its such a difference you can tell the regular eggs are malnourished because of how thin the shells are and its so horrible because people dont know chickens have their own personalities just like dogs or cats, and theyre so sweet and love you. My chickens follow me around and whenever they stray too far from me and i find them they jump into my arms and let me hug them while i carry them back to the rest of the flock. They're more than just animals but all people see them as is product, abusing them. Imagine you lived in a cage you could barley move in, living in your own waste and being fed things just to make you fatter for meat and produce eggs more, and you never see the outside or even know what its like to have sun on your skin. its absolutely disgusting and absolutely no living thing should be treated that way for a quick buck. I believe if you're going to raise something to eat it, give it the best life you possibly can out of respect for the life of anything. Oh and the best thing for your benefits too- buy from a local farmer, they're usually cheaper or one or two bucks more than the stores and a LOT fresher
I know exactly what you mean. As someone who grew up with chickens I felt nothing but disgust when watching this short. The conditions are abhorrent. Same in Ireland. I always used to be confused when I saw people complaining about the treatment of animals in factory farms because in Ireland it does not exist.

How mfs feel after buying pasture raised eggs instead of regular eggs (The regular egg hens are still confined either way): *"Theres a staaaaar maaa-!"*
From people who've gone undercover working in slaughterhouses they've recorded that almost 8/10 the companies deem these things as only a little bit more space or still stick wading through their own feces & urine which burns their skin and fur/feathers off. They are exposed to more bacteria and that's why they're fed antibiotics. In general I don't eat eggs but I'd say the best option would be a local place where you can see everything. Corporations don't show what goes on inside for a reason. Most if not almost all of what they claim is a lie and just a lie that tries to make you feel less upset about the animal's condition. Honestly the whole system is really messes up not even just ethically but from a business standpoint. They don't care about you or the animals for sure: They only care about the profit.
Well obviously local is best but do you think people buy regular eggs for the sake of it? No! People know its bad but they literally cannot afford any different.
@hellohaveagoodday eh overall eggs are not "needed" they are not essential to a healthy diet. If anything they have a ton of cholesterol and higher in fats. Overall you're really not even supposed to eat more than a small egg/day and still it can cause heart issues. I don't eat eggs and can get everything that's healthy in an egg without the cholesterol and fats; so I don't eat them. Plus there are so many plant egg alternatives that you can make yourself that are way cheaper. I can't speak for egg prices because I haven't eaten eggs in probably 9-10 years now. The best option would be to get your own chickens. However I don't believe in that either. Modern chickens were bred to lay more eggs than they originally did; farmers also mess with chickens' clock by always having light on them mimicking sun because it causes them to produce more. Chickens are pumped with steroids and antibiotics at high rates (even at local farms tbh... they'll just lie and say they don't) also because their egg production is not natural it causes it to be painful for hens and they bleed frequently; when eggs aren't fertilized the hens will eat the eggs to regain energy from what they spent laying it even when painful and bloody. I just can't support it overall. Bottom line imo is find an alternative that's better for the animals and the planet AND your wallet. Companies and even local farms know you'll buy it somehow many of them many times can also be under the same company but just pretend it's more ethical so they can raise prices. In the USA you can't trust labels because the criteria for them is so bad. They can label things organic only if just the tomato in your sandwich is organic; nothing else. They can label "free range" when chickens only get a little more leg room maybe even 1-2" more. They can lie and say the animals were happy and loved as they're being slaughtered. From the videos I've seen that's just not true.
In the Netherlands, farmers sell “Parmaham”, meat from the Italian city of Parma, but all they do is drive the pigs through Parma for a day and then return home to sell it. It’s actually Dutch meat, but no one will buy that because they are used to having Parmaham.
@@f12pushthekeys I hate to tell you this, but animals die on farms every day….. clearly you’ve never done it in your life, because a dead chicken is a common site. Those dumb asses die all the time. Once had to rescue a cow that tried to swim in a creek and got stuck in the mud up to its neck.

@@Violet_Parakeet they taste infinitely better and are much more ethical. Oh yeah and there’s a lessened chance of contracting diseases because the birds are given enough space and are in more sanitary conditions. On factory farms they are literally sitting in their own shit and any dead birds instead of being removed are just left to fester and rot which increases the chances of contamination and disease outbreak. In fact the new strains of bird flu have been linked to factory farms in China and the bird flu strain H10N8 has been causing havoc for wild bird populations and poultry farmers here in the UK
@@nothingsallowed What I mean is OP said they made it a law for eggs "sold in stores", but what about restaurants that don't buy from local grocery stores. Are they also required to buy cage free eggs?
You don't even need a big backyard, a small backyard works pretty well for something as small as chickens who don't have a large space requirement, as long as you have a bit of grass and enough space for a chicken coop you can keep chickens. if you do have a larger backyard, take it a step further and grow tomatoes or some easy to keep plant crop, you get tomatoes, the chickens eat the bugs and fertilize the soil.

We are also able to visit them any moment and check out supply chain to ensure it’s done in the best way. I have never seen birds that happy and clean.
Yea but even then, you paying for a more expensive egg doesn’t mean that the other chickens suffering decreases. It all happens no matter which one you pay for
Where do you live? Because this video _must_ be US only. Other countries have standards governing this. In Australia, the rules are as follows: Under the law, eggs labelled as 'free range' must come from hens that are able to roam and forage outdoors for at least eight hours each day. The maximum outdoor stocking density for free range egg farming is 10,000 hens per hectare of land or one hen per square metre.
I feel sad for the chickens for regular they should get atleast some sunlight once a while anywho I love your videos I always learn random stuff I always asked myself
This is not even the crulest thing that happens to chickens. But that said a person can't care for every being. Do you care for an ant that you walked upon or a cockroach that you trampled. One thing that the video doesn't tell us is that it takes far more resources to raise a chicken in the farm. So if every chicken is pasture raised most people will not even get eggs. And only the rich will have access to it. In my opinion it's better to buy regular eggs.

The funny thing is, they did a study on happiness in chickens depending on if they’re raised in a cage or as free range, and they found that there wasn’t even any significant difference in happiness between the two groups of chickens 😂. The whole point is to make the consumers happy.
Can you link the study?
Can you say the name of the study? I would like to read it
@@phoebezhang2299 I learnt about it from one of my lecturers at uni during my vet sci course.
We shouldn't buy regular eggs so that the chicken get free and buy pasture raised because the hens or chicken aren't experiencing hell ❤
They deserve freedom too 😢
Hope everyone gets my message.
Nah they all taste the same to me
So how much is the difference?
The interesting thing about "free range" is that the USDA defines it simply as "having access to outdoor space" but not how much or for how long. A farmer could literally open and shut the door to the coop faster than they can react and it would still count.
Lmao
Why would a farmer be greedy to let the chickens peck at the grass? Is it so important to him that he will let the chickens go out just for 5 minutes?

Pasture eggs have such a better taste and look so much healthier.
Which can contaminate the eggs.

pasture raised can also mean that they are still in a cage but the cage has no bottom and is on grass, I went to a farm once and they had big with some space to roam that they moved around so that the grass could grow, they do this because it stops them from being eaten by birds of prey
By cage do you mean like a fenced in area with a roof or a coop?

I love pasture raised eggs
😢😢😢
Not so fun fact: it's illegal to film inside those places because they don't want that cruelty exposed.
@@IridescentW Let me guess...
they lobbied their way into that law existing. 🙄

@@creamcheeseandpirates You can get eggs from your local farmer. Make a deal with em
I'm a pasture raised egg kinda guy.

We raise them
Pasture raised people
Same here! My family raise chickens and sell eggs, the only time they're in a 'cage' is their coops at night so they don't get killed by wildlife like foxes, raccoons, snakes, possums etc
@@suryakisku3895yea, pasture raised eggs are tastier and have darker yolks, happy chickens = better eggs
As somone who raises chickens for eggs i can confirm pasture raised is 10x better. When i go to a hotel the eggs there look digusting.
It may be safer to buy pasture raised eggs as hens that are kept close together may spread disease between each other (but cooking the egg normally will kill off all the germs anyways)
pasturisiation prevents this problem.
also, ALL comerical chickens are infected with meriks which is a form of herpies cause leaky vaccines.
IIRC pasture raised eggs are recommended for recipes that call for raw egg as they're less likely to give you diseases
I got to find pasture raised eggs to make tamago kake gohan 卵かけご飯 which means eggs on rice by simply putting a raw egg yolk in a bowl of rice but I don't know if pasture raised eggs here in the US have orange yolks like in Japan.
As an Icelander all of our chickens are the last type.
Lucky you.
I wish everywhere could be like that
☺️
There’s also more people in Wyoming alone then your country so it makes sense
the US surely is something, huh?
My family buys our eggs from a farm near us. They are pasture raised chickens. So they roam around go anywhere they want. We get them in a biodegradable carton. They aren’t washed or anything they come completely natural.
Tysm for explaining it!
