    If you want perspective on Emily, I recommend "There's the Rub," which has Lorelai-Emily bonding moments. Maybe also "The Third Lorelai." It introduces Richard's mother, who treats Emily the same way Emily treats Lorelai. Emily's an interesting character. Evil in some ways, but she does have depth, and is realistic. "The Reigning Lorelai" has already been suggested to you, and it's also a great one. Funny and sad.

    I do think this is one of the most heartbreaking episodes, mostly because if you see all of Sherry’s episodes you see the long running theme of Lorelai getting the worst sides of everybody. (Slacker Chris, antagonizing parents) and here it emphasizes that she may have gotten pregnant (a two person process lmao) but she definitely went through it alone. At 16 too, like damn this ep breaks my heart every rewatch.

    • @chuckbass3641
      @chuckbass3641 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I completely disagree. Lorelai chose to have and raise Rory alone. Chris was sad and uncertain about the situation, but he would have married Lorelai and worked at Richard's office. Lorelai believed that Chris shouldn't have to give up on his dreams and freedom just because they were having a baby, but she knew he would have given up on his dreams for her. So she took the choice out of his hands by running away.

    • @kurii6201
      @kurii6201 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@chuckbass3641 Chris wasn't ready to have a baby that much was obvious, at the very least she went through the pregnancy alone. Chris was, as you said, sad and uncertain and because of that and his parents disdain for Lorelai, it seemed he wasn't there very much in the process. Who can blame him? but unlike him, Lorelai couldn't take time to process things properly with her parents hounding her and the literal baby in her body.
      She was a kid, 16 years old, whether or not she was alone is irrelevant because she FELT alone, her parents where the opposite of supportive and the father of her baby was stressing out. She didn't want to be married, and she didn't want him to give up her dreams, so she ran away. It was sad and unfortunate that something like that felt the only option for her.
      She WAS alone

      the scene where Christopher is raving to Lorelei about how amazing he feels about Gigi's birth is one of the most casually heartbreaking scenes in this season. just watching Lorelei trying so hard to be enthusiastic and not ruin the moment for him while knowing what she's been through and how he should have been like that for Rory's birth is so bittersweet

    • @Aelffwynn
      @Aelffwynn ปีที่แล้ว +16

      He doesn't stand up for them that often really. He lets Emily bully Lorelai all the time. And he shows in his private conversations with Emily that he agrees with her, he just disagrees with her handling of things sometimes. This is obvious in the arc where he tries to turn Luke's into a franchise. And when Lorelai isn't talking to Emily but is talking to Richard, Richard makes it clear to Emily that he doesn't care why Lorelai is mad, just that he hopes he can manipulate her back into the fold. He also brags to Jason that he has done vindictive things in business all the time. Richard is a more subtle manipulator and less obvious snob than Emily, but that's about it. They both have their good points and bad points, but I don't think either is less evil than the other. They are, however, a match made in heaven. They work together, scheme together, love each other, and have wonderful chemistry. I love them.

He just lets her be the loud shrill one but they are 100% on the same page when it comes to opinions on Lorelei and anyone not in their social class. I really don’t understand why people cut him so much slack when he’s clearly not a good person or a good father.

    • @Aelffwynn
      @Aelffwynn ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yeah, I was surprised someone said this episode made them like her more. I'm like..."How? She's yelling at her daughter in the hospital as she's going into labor! Not a good look!" Emily has her good moments, but that episode did not show her in a positive light. The episodes with Trix/Gran are the best for making her sympathetic. And "There's the Rub" shows hints of the kind of person she could be if she didn't have such rigid views.

    • @thatjillgirl
      @thatjillgirl ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think it's a good example of something we see repeatedly through the series: Emily does love Lorelai and wants so badly to have a really close relationship with her and be involved in her life. She is truly hurt when Lorelai pushes her out. But she fundamentally misunderstands Lorelai and wants her to be things that Lorelai simply never will, so they never are able to have that connection that both of them long for. In this one we see that Emily actually did the best she could do in stepping up and rolling with it when her teenage daughter was suddenly pregnant, and she was truly hurt when Lorelai left. I have always liked that complexity of Emily. She truly loves her daughter but is perpetually unable to express it in a way that is mutually beneficial to them both.

    YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT A BEANIE BABY IS?!?!
    mmmmm.... let's also talk about the C-section comment. Women who get them do still feel things. And still go through labour which for some is the worst part. I know one woman felt like she was suffocating because the numbing when all the way up to her neck and couldn't feel herself breathing. I know some who had the misfortune of the ceiling being reflective and could see their whole surgery. Your organs get moved around. I have heard how many found it a traumatizing experience where they felt out of control and stripped of their voices so that they could advocate for themselves. Not to mention, the weeks-months of added recovery because it IS a M-A-J-O-R surgery. So it isn't a small deal where you can't even feel anything so what of it. I've heard men IRL say having a c-section is taking the easy way out. And comments about it's just c-section really irk me.

      Now, I've educated myself and know better, and holy crap, a c section that goes perfectly still leaves you healing from a major surgery for weeks while needing to take care of a newborn.

      @notthemovie  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was referring to just the baby removal process pain, not labor and recovery. I was a c-section baby, and my mom told me ALLLLLLL about it, and the weeks it took before she could even leave the hospital.
      C-section is how REAL babies are born, the other way is for Pu**ies. 😁

    I think it's worth pointing out that the writers throughout the series and much of Gilmore Girls fandom love to trash Christopher as a bad dad who wasn't there for Rory, yet in this episode, Christopher is ready to change his plans to support Rory and be there for Lor, being on board with marriage twice in the episode. I'm not a fan of teen marriages, but it's clear he was willing to do whatever he need to be there for Lor and Rory. It was Lor who objected to him giving up or postponing his plan, even though most people who have an unplanned pregnancy sacrifice plans. Honestly, Chris is the most relatable in this, because regardless of his wealth, he's willing to be a stand up guy and deal with any inconveniences the situation causes. Also, it appears that Lor didn't bother to call him before Rory was born. So, though a lot of people, including Lor, go on and on and on about Christopher not being there for his daughter, it was Lorelai who made a point of sending the message that Christoper was irrelevant and unneeded in Rory's life. The biggest legitimate knock on Chris in the series is he was kind of a flake when it came to a job, but if he had gone to work with Richard for a few years until he knew what he wanted to do for a career, Richard would've taught him the discipline needed to achieve whatever career he eventually wanted. While most teen marriages fail, in large part over arguments about lack of money, which would not have been a problem for Chris and Lor, I think they may have been able to make a go of it, because they had the safety net of Lor's parents to help and Chris understood her better than anyone. She then moved 30 miles away which is not far for an independent adult, but Chris was still a minor with controlling parents, so who knows when he could even get to Stars Hollow. Rory would've been two by the time he turned 18 and he'd already likely missed out on the formative bonding process. Heck, we don't even know how long it took until Lor bothered to let him know where she took Rory. Like with Max, Lor seemed to decide that she, not Rory or anyone else, was the only person who mattered. Bottom line, Christopher was always head over heels in love with Lor and wanted to be with her, but despite adult Chris and Lor's off the charts chemistry, Lor was never as invested in their relationship as Chris. Ironically, though Sheri is incredibly insufferable, Chris stepped up, because he wanted a chance to finally rise his child. I've often suspected that Sheri's pregnancy was planned on her part to trap him when things got bad, but he did what he had to do, even giving up what he wanted most in life--a life with Lorelai and Rory, to stand up like Lor never allowed him to do. Hence, Chris' bad dad reputation is unearned and unfair.

      You're making a lot of excuses for a grown man failing his daughter for the majority of her life. Christopher being a present and consistent father is not and will never be related to whether or not he is in a romantic relationship with Lorelai. Period

    • @Nikki-oe7gr
      @Nikki-oe7gr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rayanog The so called "grown man" was SIXTEEN when Rory was born, and Lorelai made it clear her was not needed in Rory's life... and even moved away before he was an adult. Yet, even once they were adults, she had a snit, because he dared want Rory to spend Christmas with him. That is evidence of how despite her claims to the contrary, she undermined his relationship with his daughter. We've seen on the show how downright selfish Lorelia can be and how possessive she is of Rory. Heck, after spending an entire summer with her in Europe, she was all put out about her parents spending time with her before college started. And we saw how horribly she treated Max in general and specifically, very clearly didn't want him to have any role as stepfather, even though Rory wanted him as a stepfather. So, it's a bit much to think Lorelai doesn't have a sizable amount of blame in what went on with Christopher and Rory's relationship.

I have to say you know exactly how to play your cluelessness with the show to get laughs...after all,the people watching are all mega-fans and so the laughs are kind of guaranteed.. either the actual joke is funny OR your reaction is funny...win,win!Watch the spa episode because just when you think you can't hate Emily enough...you wind up really liking her.Someone suggested it a couple of comments down.

Like you can see why someone from her background would be a snob and try to push certain things on her daughter and granddaughter, thinking it's for their own good. Doesn't make it okay, just adds depth to the character.

    I don't think this episode makes you LIKE Emily more, but you do see a glimpse into her point of view, Lorelai always planning things behind her back, planning on leaving a note and going to Europe, leaving a note instead of telling her she's in labor, and the ultimate killshot, leaving a note to let her know she left the house and took Rory with her. Even understanding Lorelai's side of things, how pressured, missunderstood and unheard she felt, leaving without saying goodbye was a dick move, that hurt Emily and Richard deeply. In a different episode an angry Richard tells Lorelai that Emily was devastated when she left their home like that, and that she couldn't leave her bed for months, Lorelai never even thought of how she might destroy her parents with her leaving like that, she is selfish. Emily is not a great mother, she is not empathetic, she is manipulative and she is a snob treating Lorelai like her like is trash compared to what she could have had if she had followed the family ways. BUT... We see this Emily in the present, we don't know if she was always like that, we see her being uptight and a little pushy with Lor, but all the negative glimpses we see from her are a direct response to Lor's behaviours. She might have been an uptight annoying helicopter parent, but maybe Lorelai's betrayal (leaving) might have turned her into a villain.

    • @CDG1228
      @CDG1228 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reading this gave me whiplash:
      *Saying you understand why LORELAI felt the way that she did & then calling her leaving without saying goodbye a "dick move" is like saying "I understand I hurt you BUT it's your fault that I hurt you".
      She DID say goodbye. She did it with a letter because she knew her mother very well & knew what her reaction would be. Staying in this toxic environment just to keep Emily from being devastated would have actually been the "dick move".
      **"...we don't know if she was always like that...". This episode CLEARLY shows us that she has ALWAYS been like that.
      ***"...she might have been an uptight, annoying helicopter parent...". THIS also is CLEARLY why LORELAI wanted to get away from her parents, mostly her mother. Emily wasn't some demure, cooking baking, stay at home wife & mother who magically turned into a villain AFTER LORELAI left. It was this "villainous behavior" that caused LORELAI to finally decide to leave.

    • @cinnymoongirl
      @cinnymoongirl ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CDG1228 Hey! I see how my comment may have felt confusing so i'm going to expand slightly. Just because i understand why Lorelai felt pressured in no way means i condone the way she left her parent's house. For example i use my own experience, i had a toxic mother who i cannot live with anymore, after 1 week she goes back to her toxicity, when i decided i was going to move out, i told her the day before i left, i sat her down and told her, my desition was final and there is nothing else to do, because if we remained in the same house we were going to destroy our relationship, we needed distance, i needed distance from her. The next day the truck came and i moved, she cried and said goodbye with a hug. Today we have a really good solid relationship because of that distance. But if it would have pulled a Lorelai we probably would not be were we are today.
      I see how people can empathize more with Lorelai than Emily, but i see it both ways. In flashbacks we see Emily be pushy and uptight but we do not see her be mean and manipulative, so no, we don't see her "CLEARLY always being like that".
      Our parents are fucked up and they have in turn given us generational trauma, but we can't wash our hands and pretend that our actions do not affect them and cause them pain. Lorelai always felt pressured and wanted to live a more relaxed and free life. She chose her own mental health and that is ok. But she did break Emily's heart and may have caused her to become a spiteful person. Specially since after leaving, they only saw each other once or twice a year. She is deliberately keeping Rory from them (out of fear of them influencing her in a negative way) yet the minute she needs something, now it's worth her time to go see them. I see both sides of the coin. As a 33 year old who grew up watching the show having a Rory/Lorelai relationship with my mother that later turned into a Lorelai/Emily version and now we're both mostly on equal ground, i've seen things. I've seen the show countless times, is one of my comfort shows. So i very aware of how selfish Lorelai is, how manipulative Emily is and how immature Rory is.

    • @CDG1228
      @CDG1228 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cinnymoongirl Doesn't matter whether or not you condone someone else's behavior (even a fictional someone). Nobody needs anyone's approval before getting out of a toxic situation. We are not all the same. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions. I'm glad it worked out for you but what works for you won't work for everyone.
      If your 17 year old daughter leaving turns you into a spiteful person, that's clear evidence that Lorelai made the right choice. A better option would have been to get therapy to be a BETTER person, not marinate in the toxicity.
      The minute she needed something came 15 years later, was for Rory's education (not for something frivolous) and...OF COURSE...came with strings & conditions.
      Not staying somewhere where you are unhappy is not selfish.
      Not marrying a man you don't love is not selfish.
      Not waiting around forever for a man to include you in his life is not selfish.

      @cinnymoongirl ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CDG1228 Just to be clear, i NEVER said Lorelai should have asked for permission to leave, or that she should stay in the home. Leaving was alwasy the better choice since therapy wasn't an option for Emily. But leaving without a proper goodbye is twisting the knife and that stems from Lorelai's lack of care for other people's feelings. This is a common theme on the show. DONT GET ME WRONG, I LOVE THE SHOW and i always will, but after a million rewatches you see all points of view. Again, i UNDERSTAND why Lorelai is the way she is, i just simply do not condone nor justify her actions. You and i just have different ways of interpreting the character's flaws and that is ok, that is part of the charm of this show, different people enjoy it differently. Have a wonderful weekend.
