Thank you. We had a shifting problem we changed the cable set everything properly still not shifting into reverse. With the outdrive removed from the transom we tried moving the shift rod by hand and it definitely binded to the point where no amount of cable force was going to shift the shift rod. A look at the parts diagram brought me to part 15 the detent shifter ball and spring. My thoughts Warner something is worn or binding or corroded and that we should look in this direction. A little bit of searching and investigation led me to your video and the explanation you have about the ball and the step up of the new design part what's an epiphany thank you so much for making this video and I think it's something that is going to solve all our problems thanks again. It won't be nice to get back to enjoying boating.

I just bought the whole cover too. The cheapest wiper I’ve found was $27 and the new cover was $35. Thank you for the video.

thanks for the video. I was looking for the new detent for the 7.5 liter king cobra version but there's no updated part number. It seems like the OEM detent between the larger king cobras was different and they didn't upgrade the detent. Do you know if this new updated detent will work on the 7.5 liter king cobra as well?

The manual says to pull the rod out from the cover and the pictures show the shift rode out of the io

    Wayne,
I have been experiencing some issues with my Omc stern drive and was wondering if I could get your advice on the issue. My drive is a 1993 Omc cobra, works perfectly fine in forward gear however, does not work well in reverse. When I put it in reverse I can not accelerate because it sounds like the gear is grinding / slipping. As long as I keep it at idle it works fine but as soon as I give it some gas it doesn't work anymore. Do you think this is an adjustment issue or are the dog clutch/ gears destroyed? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Wayne, you are calling for a OMC Cobra shift rod height of 7.156, the OMC manual calls for 7 13/64 or 7.203, which is the correct measurement ?

    • @WayneColl

8 turns or 7.156 in most cases with the new detent. Old detent I'm not sure what to tell you as there is 1/16 inch of play up and down and very hard to set but 7.156 is what we set them for before we started replacing with new type.

Wayne Coll I used the OMC manual specs, still having the same problem though, shifts into reverse ok but won't engage into forward completely, just grinds. Even with lower cable disconnected and shifting by hand, used the guages for lever centering and cable adjustment, seems the shift rod is not traveling enough but it worked fine off the boat both ways. Sorry to drone on but am stuck right now.

Just as a follow up, readjusted the shift rod height 2 turns down now have full engagement in forward and reverse. The ESA setup even when adjusted properly works poorly so I removed the overstroke pin from the shift lever and installed a momentary switch in the drivers footwell for the ESA activation. Now I can activate it when I want for as long as I need to achieve gear engagement. Might not be everyone's ideal setup but works like a champ for me and no more harsh gear engagements so I'm sure my lower unit is much happier.

Love your videos. You’ve helped me with so much it’s not even funny. I got a outboard but I’ve noticed most principals are the same. You recently helped me take all the gear and pinion out and helped me discover my nightmare hahaha. All the gears are messed up. Anyway. That’s not why I’m messaging
That detent lever, where can I order one? You think it will work only outboard? Do they have these type detents for outboard specifically an 78 115hp Evinrude. Model number 115899c hahaha. I got lots of parts to order and pending your price and location, I would like to consider coming to you for these.
    Thanks in advance!
