Absolutely! I hemmed and hawed for a couple of months before getting this album, but am a sucker for anything Pacific Jazz, so I recently received a copy. Yes, the recording and pressing are sensational: On par with AP's 33-1/3 albums. Flat, quiet, with a great, punchy sound and wonderful soundstage. But then there is the jazz. Oh my... Spectacular from beginning to end. Bolton and Amy are stunning, and Crawford's tone is incredible. How could I not have hear of Dupree Bolton before now??
Agreed with the archival TP releases this year. Excellent choices to date with all looking and sounding in very good shape. I've a different opinion on the Charles Lloyd Tone Poem release but no matter. Maybe having the reference point of a couple of pre-pandemic live gigs helps? Thanks for the post!
Michael, Thanks again for a great breakdown of the Tone Poet series. I am so glad to see many of the forgotten gems coming out like Dexter Gordon and Andrew Hill. I added them to my collection last weekend and think the sound quality and pressing is phenomenal. Keep up the great work on these reviews and rundowns!
Received my UHQR Kind of blue. It sounds so awesome. Thanks to you Michael i decided to buy this reissue. Worth every Dollar/Euro. Super quiet. Great soundstage.....almost everything. It's so goooooood!
I have to agree on the Charles Lloyd album, fortunately TH-cam had the album on line to listen to, and I am glad I did as I to was very disappointed in the album and saved myself buying something I would have never listened to again. That being said I am looking forward to the future Grant Greene album release. Great video and thank you for the review, look forward to more. Cheers from Canada
I'm not a collector of Tone Poets, I'm not a collector of anything as a collection, just of what I like. This time I have several of the records you mention (finally!)… to say this: Regarding form and function? The Tone Poets edition is just perfect for me. Everything, starting with amazing pressings and sound quality (I don't have one bad yet), the gatefold, the print quality, the cover design… I don't care about the box (for one or a couple of records?), the foam, the air, the gimmicks, the faux fancy luxury, to justify high prices… You can go further in cover design like the ones from VMP, but as a model or starting point? Tone Poets. The other labels and genres of music should watch and learn.
Excellent Excellent Excellent! The best series of record showings on your channel i think Michael! Katanga is really gorgeous. That Andrew Hill blows me away (the bass is so deep and dynamic) One flight up has been spinning many times on my TT over the last few weeks. I do like the Tone Poem despite it being digitally sourced. It's smooth easy listening to but totally agree with you it's a little safe. Many thanks
Art Pepper was amazing. Of course, there is the biography which is a must read for jazz fans. It's wonderful to see west coast jazz get some love with those Pacific Jazz label Tone Poet releases.
“He was part of the West Coast jazz scene, which was mellower and less fiery than bebop.” Like Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, Pepper had a distinctive sound and style. all three men were heroin addicts: “Drugs created extremes in their emotions and that came out in the music. It made them feel more confident. It was almost like they said, ‘I’m going to sacrifice my body so I can play a great gig.’” (Kate Schmier)
I just picked up Katanga today after checking it out on Spotify. Instantly fell in love with it. Glad to see you covered it here in this video. What a great channel. Love it. Thanks Michael
Hello Michael! Been watching your channel for almost half a year and today I finished all the videos. Well except some of the videos for 1-1.5 hours , mostly interviews, they are for some evening watch. I’ve wanted to say huge Thank You! For your work in explaining and introducing to audiophile vinyl. Based on your videos, I’ve already bought some “tone poet” series and “speakers corner”. Now I’m completely reorganising my collection, for analog masters mostly. The topics about shipment from USA to Europe is also very important. I hope someone will hear us and make it more affordable. Though I’m not in Europe, and here I have same problems, with big orders to make shipment more affordable. 🙏
My katanga and twd will arive this week... happy to get them. For the tone poem i understand your thoughts, but i like it because of the bluesy style. But you are right and brought it to the point when it comes to the emcs - no risk!
Thank you Michael. I agree with you regarding the Charles Lloyd release, which is why i haven't picked it up. Sorry for the misspelling. lol typo now corrected!
Pacific Jazz has many wonderful sounding recordings. One stunner coming out later as a Tone Poet is Joe Pass "For Django". I have a NM Japanese pressing from '78 - WOW! It's a must get.
Hi MIchael, regarding Art Pepper, you can still find some of his titles in OJC editions, which for some reason nobody talks about. Those are, in great part, great sounding AAA releases, nice inner sleeves, for very little money. I read somewhere that up until #250, all OJC editions come from the Analog masters. Every OJC that i own sounds fantastic, it's a very good option for those hard to finde Prestige/Fantasy titles. Best wishes from Chile!
I read that on the Hoffman forums as well, but having then bought a few, I don’t see any info in the deadwax, which someone on the forums indicates a digital cut.
@@tugga511 they weren't even sure about the numbers. To be honest, we should only care about how they sound, and to, they sound very good, they're cut a little hotter than most audiophile releases, but you can really enjoy the Van Gelder sound of the 50s on these releases. It's a great way to get all those Prestige Miles Davis records, they sound really great (I assume the analog Productions versions are better, buy haven't compared directly).
@@felipeopazomusic Agreed. I bought the Relaxin’ and Workin’, as also the Portrait in Jazz. They sound perfectly acceptable. If AP represses the Miles Prestige sessions I would consider picking those up but until then these do the job.
Fantastic video again, Michael. I've got those Tone Poet releases and I really enjoy the quality of the whole package. Amazing! Can't wait for the Wayne Shorter release. I already got that one on CD, but i prefer the Tone Poet release of course! ;-)
Jimmy Chamberlin from the Smashing Pumpkins recently talked about “The Witch Doctor” on the TH-cam video What’s in my Bag for Amoeba records. I ended up ordering the album, but I had no idea just how outstanding the album would be. The drums are spectacular and the way the other musicians play off of them just creates something so special. The last year or so my jazz collection has really grown, and this album is up there with the best of the best. The quality of this pressing and everything down to the sleeve makes this a must have for any vinyl collection.
Hello Michael, The Witch Doctor was actually recorded on March 14, 1961. It sat in the can until 1969 and released in January of that year. Woody Shaw, Randy Brecker, Carlos Garnett, Tyrone Washington, George Cables, John Hicks, Scott Holt, and a few other cats comprised The Jazz Messengers in 1969. Dig your channel, bro! Mark
I think the current Jazz you'd like is in the International Anthem Recording Co label from Chicago They take those risks you miss. And the artwork and covers are great
I really enjoyed A Suite For Max Brown by Jeff Parker and The New Breed. The vinyl for that release and a few others are pressed at Pallas but I know they also have used Optimal and GZ as well.
Amazon UK show McCoy Tyner and Sonny Clark as 9th july release , which is at odds with the Blue Note site. I agree about recent ECM releases, they seem to be working to a formula, or it might be the ECM house sound that makes them all sound similar. They are perfectly pleasant, but not essential listening.
I am in complete agreement on needing Art Pepper releases. I would love to see an audiophile reissue of the two Live At Ronnie Scott's Club albums (Blues for the Fisherman and True Colors). The original Mole editions are very good but I would buy them again to see what a new remaster/pressing would bring to the table.
I just learned from Wikipedia that Curtis Amy was musical director for Ray Charles for a few years and was married to the amazing singer Merry Clayton (Gimme Shelter by the Stones). Wow, I had no idea!
Hi Michael, got my Dexter Gordon few days ago, fantastic release and what a performance! Regarding modern jazz. I mentioned this ones before, try E.S.T. Esbjorn Svensson trio, if you like of course, but their Live in Hamburg 4x LP set is breath taking performance. Right now its still on discogs from German seller groovesland, which was very good to deliver this set to me in Holland in just 2 days and the price is very good and its original pressing from 2013, so highly recommend. By the way, its just been repressed and the new 28-05- 2021 release cost now double, cos its already sold out? Get original one, before its gone! Cheers, Sergei
@@Michael45RPM That's strange. I check the Blue Note website pretty regular and it always said "Sold out" on this redord. Anyway, would be waiting on standby for Chet and Pepper :)
Sonny Red can’t wait, although I’m feeling that as the July ones were delayed 1 month that this will push everything back. Like you Michael I don’t see 4 releases in August. Maybe the delay is to create space for represses?
Hello Michael, thanks for the review. I only have Dexter Gordon "One Flight Up" so far. Bur Andrew Hill and Art Blakey are waiting for me in the local store. I listened to them both online first and you confirm my thoughts... C. Amy is in my wantlist and I decided not to buy the Charles Lloyd after listening to it online. I would rather go for young musicians mixing influences. There are plenty of choices at the moment. I agree it is not always jazz as you would define it but Curtis Amy is not classic jazz as well. Thanks for guiding us. Take care. Bruno
Michael - check mal Christian Lillinger - open form of society. Gibt's noch auf Vinyl (limitiert auf 300). Extrem gut aufgenommen und... wild! Irgendwo zwischen Jazz und neuer Musik.
Michael, you need to find the "Art Pepper - The Complete Art Pepper At Ronnie Scott's Club London June 1980" box set on Pure Pleasure. It is Fan-tas-tic!
Hidden gem : The Milcho Leviev Quartet - Blues For The Fisherman , feat. Art Pepper !! Recorded by Tri-Arts Associates Limited for TAA/Mole Record Productions at Ronnie Scott's on Friday/Saturday/Sunday 27/28/29 June 1980. Technical Note: This recording was made using mutli-microphones in a straight stereo mix without any noise reduction system, limiting, compression or equalization on either the location or on the transfer of the original master tapes to the lacquers from which the final pressings are made.
Enjoyed them all immensely. Although I agree the tone poem should have been a separate release and not part of the series. The latest releases are all amazing.
Picture of Heath is actually the Playboys album, they banned the cover because it was to naughty for the era and it was re-released . Its a great record, I have the Pure Pleasure records version.
I'm kinda disappointed that All In My Mind wasn't also a 3 sided or double release. Really love the new liner notes for Katanga and immediately finished reading them before even putting the album on. All Seeing Eye is a great Wayne Shorter album and I hope they have session pictures for it.
I must be the only person who doesn't really like the gatefolds. My preference is the single pocket tip-on, i really like way the rear of the jacket is printed, just like the OG Blue Notes, with the square paper attached, and the graphics and text layout like the originals. So when some of the Tone Poets skip the gatefold, i am extra happy! And the single jackets take up half the shelf space! They could print the photos from the inside gatefold on paper so we could frame them, instead they hid inside the folded jacket forever.
You’re not the only person, I fully agree with you. Space is precious when you have a large collection and the Stoughton gatefold jackets have a tendency to tear in the middle when shipped. The way Sam Records does it with the photos as inserts is the way to go IMO.
I love the gatefold from an art and collector perspective, but they are a pain to store and require extra-large outer sleeves. So I'm half with you. :)
Tone Poets deliver top quality but the Classics series has been sound wise a disappointment for some titles but mostly I had plenty of them with faults, scratches etc and even 2 in a row being faulty. I guess Classics are pressed elsewhere as the QC seem to be non existent! For us that missed the MM/AP train with those great titles now released on Classics I would have wished for a better quality… why not all on Tone Poets, Michael do you know why?
