I am happy to be reeducated here (with facts only) but I really can't understand why Chinese people continually look back at the historical achievements of the Manchurian (Qing) government?
The Manchus had many battles with the Mongols and eventually conquered China.
Saying that the Qing is Chinese is like the Greeks claiming Ottoman achievements or the French claiming Roman achievements. Although the French were once Roman's people would laugh if they hung their hat on Roman history and territory.
To me the Qing are as Chinese as Genghis Khan, in otherwards not Chinese at all so it is ridiculous for the PRC to claim their achievements.

If we follow China's rhetoric about the historical justification for claiming territories outside the internationally recognized boundaries, Mongolia owns vast territories inside China, including its present capital Beijing. The Mongolian Yuan Dynasty in China built Beijing as its capital in 1267, moving it from Karakorum in Mongolia. The Yuan Dynasty was established in 1271 when the Mongols unified China after defeating the Southern Song. The Mongol leader Kublai Khan ordered the reconstruction of Beijing, which was previously destroyed by the Genghis Khan Empire in 1215.

So what is President Lai's position on Taiwan's historical status?
By mentioning the Russian question, Lai is effectively saying that Taiwan is indeed historically Chinese.
However, for the past 30 years, the DPP folks have also been claiming Taiwan has always been an external entity that is sort of linked to China but not really historically part of China?
Interesting for Lai to raise the Russian question but does not change anything.

Article 10 of the Taipei Peace Treaty stipulates that “nationals of the Republic of China shall be deemed to include all the inhabitants and former inhabitants of Taiwan (Formosa) and Penghu (the Pescadores).” Therefore the Taipei Peace Treaty transferred Japans sovereignty of Taiwan to ALL the inhabitants living of the island NOT to mainland China.
The inhabitants in 1952 were the ROC escapees, Taiwanese Aborigines, Japanese descendants, Dutch descendants, Portuguese descendants, previous Chinese descendants. As you stated, the island was not ceded to the PRC

Article 10 of the “Nikka Peace Treaty” (日華講和条約) seems to impart a veneer of legitimacy to the Jan. 1, 1946 (retroactive to October 25, 1945) forced mass nationalization of the native inhabitants of UN forces-occupied Japanese Taiwan. But you are imparting article 10 of that treaty with too much, too deep meaning.
Japan having stripped its former Komins of Japanese Taiwan of their Japanese nationality effective April 28, 1952, the latter needed an “ausweiss” or a “laissez passer”, or “travel documents” to travel between Japan and Taiwan. When article 10 of the treaty says “are deemed”, they are only deemed. That is all there is to it.
Besides, the population of Taiwan is deemed such and such “for the purpose of the present treaty.” The September 29, 1972, normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and the People's Republic of China (PRC), resulted in voiding the Treaty of Taipei. Some have concluded that the population of Taiwan is legally stateless as a result.
Which segues into the issue of absence of international recognition of the “governing authorities ON Taiwan” (在台治理當局, TRA terminology) and the confusion between state sovereignty and popular sovereignty.
The Treaty of Taipei could not supersede the San Francisco Peace Treaty. The Japanese government concluded a bilateral treaty of peace that could not grant the Chinese regime in exile ON Taiwan “greater advantages than those extended to the parties to the San Francisco Peace Treaty,” or the 49 signatories of the SFPT could all claim Taiwan (San Francisco Peace Treaty Article 26).
Furthermore, the government of Japan had already lost territorial rights and the capacity to cede Taiwan when it signed the Treaty of Taipei. The Japanese government, having lost its territorial rights in the SFPT, could not transfer the sovereignty of Taiwan to the Chinese exiled regime ON Taiwan (TRA terminology).
Owing to 50 years spent in bondage under the Chinese occupier’s straw sandal, the Taiwanese electorate is keen on popular sovereignty. Popular sovereignty is the capacity of the electorate to get representatives mindful of their mission of keeping a government accountable to the people.
State sovereignty, on the other hand, refers to the legal authority and responsibility of an independent state to govern and regulate its political affairs without foreign interference. Sovereign states have supreme authority over their territory.
But US-DOS says that “the governing authorities ON Taiwan” do not enjoy the sovereignty of Taiwan, are not a state and that Taiwan is not independent, albeit not Chinese either.
Earlier this year, a comment Miles Yu (余茂春) made in a Taiwan-related video program caught my attention. He said that he would lobby to get the TRA amended, to erase the ungainly “the people ON Taiwan” from the text of the act.
I reached into the text of the TRA to compare the two English and Chinese language versions. There are 8 mentions of “the people ON Taiwan” and 6 mentions of “the governing authorities ON Taiwan”.
Of the 8 mentions of “the people ON Taiwan” in the original, the Chinese version uses the correct “在台人民” translation only once, the first time. In all its other occurrences, the phrase is translated “台灣人民” (Taiwanese people) or “台灣之人民” (people of Taiwan).
Of the 6 mentions of “the governing authorities ON Taiwan” in the original version, the Chinese version manages to correctly translate none. Instead, of “governing authorities ON Taiwan” (correct translation: 在台統治當局 or 在台治理當局), the Chinese version reads “Taiwan governing authorities” (台灣統治當局,台灣治理當局).
Coached by US-DOS briefings until Kissinger kowtowed to Chou en-lai over the “undetermined international status” issue, Congress had purposefully come up with this weird phrasing, “the people ON Taiwan” and “the governing authorities ON Taiwan”. It all flows from San Francisco Peace Treaty territorial dispositions article 2 (b).
Allow me to dot my I’s and cross my T’s here. You will be Chinese as long as you deem yourselves the “🇹🇼people ON Taiwan" (在台🇹🇼人民, TRA terminology).
Shimonoseki Treaty → San Francisco Peace Treaty → UN Resolution 2758 does not impinge on Taiwan’s undecided international status → Taiwan Relations Act: Neither the peoples of China nor the deluded 24 million who deem themselves the “🇹🇼people ON Taiwan" (在台🇹🇼人民, TRA terminology) can enjoy Taiwan's sovereignty. This is the United States' ironclad position on post-WWII Taiwan. The United States has the final say.
The Chinese from both shores of the strait are going to tell me that it is a domestic law of the USA and that no Chinese should bother with its content. But this betrayal of the letter of the TRA and of the intent of Congress had consequences on Lee Teng-hui, Chen Shui-bian, Tsai Ing-wen and, currently, Lai Ching-te’s tenures.
As CEOs of the “governing authorities ON Taiwan”, they condoned and implemented the localization of an alien regime that is robbing Taiwan of its place among the nations. It should raise eyebrows both in the U.S.A. and ON Taiwan.
I learned without surprise that the mangled translation, a blatant betrayal of the intent of Congress, was the deed of the Chinese KMT through AmCham Taiwan. But since AIT is hosting both the English and Chinese versions on its website, AIT and US-DOS should be held accountable before Congress for their inadequate oversight of the translation. That makes AIT accessory to the Chinese KMT’s contempt of Congress.
While you are officially deeming yourselves Chinese, you are living the Chinese lie of Chinese Taiwan ON non-Chinese Taiwan. And you are giving the lie a new lease on life until Taiwan is ripe to fall into China’s lap. Don’t blame it on the messenger when you are officially deeming yourselves Chinese. Place the blame where blame belongs.

@@jeromebesson Whether you consider Taiwan a country or not does not automatically cede the island of Taiwan to the PRC.
There are no internationally recognised treaties, policies or UN resolutions that state that Taiwan is part of China. Also, historically, China has had minimal control over the island of Taiwan, I will explain further below.
      Now some facts about Taiwan:
1: The island now known as Taiwan was inhabited and ruled by the aborigines for approximately 30,000 years.
2: When the Dutch arrived in 1626 most of the population of Formosa were the Yuanzhumin or Gaoshan people (who have no DNA link back to China)
3: The Qing government (who were NOT Chinese) had minimal control of Taiwan in fact the Qing only managed to rule less than 20% of the island while the aborigines ruled and controlled over 80% of the island. The Qing created a border in 1750 with rocks which was called the Tu Niu Red Line. The Japanese were the first country to colonise Formosa and create roads and infrastructure..
4: Due to the lack of control, the Qing did not declare Formosa a Province of the Qing until 1885 as the Japanese was encroaching on the island. The island was handed to Japan soon after.
5: Over the past 400 years the island has been partially ruled by 5 different governments but it was only the Japanese and ROC who had full control of the entire island.
6: Historically the CCP recognized Formosan independence. In 1936, when the Republic of China (ROC) was China’s government and Taiwan (Formosa) was a Japanese colony, Chairman Mao Zedong offered support to Korea and Formosa if their peoples wished to gain independence from Japan. Mao’s internationalist position suggested that 1) both Korea and Formosa have a right to independence, and 2) this is based on the right to self-determination. Mao did not claim that Taiwan has been an integral part of China. (look up Edgar Snow interview))
7: The Cairo Declaration 1943 discussed the possibility of handing the island of Taiwan to the ROC. This discussion required a treaty to become official and was never implemented.
8: The PRC constitution was formed in 1949 yet Taiwan was not added to it until 1978.
9: The ROC were granted a caretaker role of Formosa after WW2 but when the ROC escaped to the island it still legally belonged to Japan.
10: When Japan relinquished its sovereignty of Taiwan with The Treaty of San Francisco after the ROC invaded the Japanese island, China was not even invited. The treaty was signed by 49 nations but both the ROC and CCP were NOT present.
11: The One China Policy, Un Resolution 2758 or the Treaty of San Francisco do not declare that Taiwan is a province of China. There are no internationally recognized treaties, policies or UN resolutions that state that Taiwan is part of China.
The only legal way that Taiwan can amalgamate with China is if they agree to a treaty ceding their sovereignty. Whether Taiwan is considered a country or not does not automatically grant China with sovereignty of the region.

Where have I ever written that Taiwan had been ceded to China, to any China one way or another? Although I totally agree with the content of your comment, I resent the fact that you introduce it as if I allocated Taiwan to any China.
You demonstrate a lot of brass, relying negatively on my comment as you do to state exactly what I have always been claiming in all my comments over many years. Please, save your otherwise commendable comment to paste it under every future “Taiwan Talks” episode, and have it pinned there by “Taiwan Talks”. I will always give it a thumb up.
But, please, pretty please, do it independently of my comments and refrain from pretending that you misunderstood the content of my own comments.

I disagree with your conclusion that "the Taipei Peace Treaty transferred Japan's sovereignty of Taiwan to ALL the inhabitants living of the island." You are falling into the -- Oh so -- Chinese and now Taiwanese foible of interpreting the content of the treaty as they see fit. You are also confusing state sovereignty and popular sovereignty.
At the time of the San Francisco Peace Conference, Taiwan was still Japanese territory, albeit militarily occupied like the rest of Japan. During six year of occupation, the Chinese military government was bent on annexing Japanese Taiwan in total disregard of international law.
Misrepresenting themselves as governors of Taiwan province of China, Chen Yi (29/08/1945 - 22/04/1945), Wei Dao-ming (16/05/1947 - 05/01/1949), Chen Cheng (05/01/1949 - 21/12/1949) and K.C. Wu (21/12/1949 - 16-04/1953) failed to establish the "Tai-Peng Advisory Council” (台澎諮詢會) as embryo of a future government of Tai-Peng.
As a result, when the San Francisco Peace Conference was held, no Taiwan government had been established under the command of the Chinese military government and there was no representative of any Taiwan government on hand to receive from Japan recognition of Taiwanese independence.
After April 28, 1952, the Republic of China armed forces garrisoned as occupation forces ON Taiwan and their notorious Taiwan Garrison Command (September 1945 - 1 August 1992) should have morphed into the Republic of China Civil Administration Of Tai-Peng (ROCCATP)). And the early "Tai-Peng Advisory Council” (台澎諮詢會) should have morphed into the government of Tai-Peng (台澎政府) headed by a popularly elected Taiwanese governor under ROCCATP overseight.
In actuality, “the governing authorities ON Taiwan (在台治理當局, TRA terminology) managed to establish a semblance of that government of Tai-Peng (台澎政府) when they established the now moth-balled (July 2018) Taiwan Provincial Government (臺灣省政府) on May 16, 1947.
