    I will apologize for the lengthy post right off the bat LOL
    If you have an Apple Iphone feel free to jump to the "bottom line" of this post.
    Here's an update.
    I got the Saramonic USB-C cable, and it works... sorta.
    I tried the cable on 2 different Android smartphones. at first, none of the phones seem to detect it. Then, I had the brilliant idea to look at the side of the box the cable came in, and saw that Saramonic recommends using this cable with apps that have an audio input selection option like Cinema FV5. I had the app already so I just ran it, selected the input and it worked. If you are just using your smartphone to record video it definitely serves the purpose, but don't expect it to work with Facebook live or TH-cam live with the built in camera. There might be other apps that will allow you to do so, but do note that those apps will have to give you an option to select the audio input.
    If you are expecting the Saramonic cable to work right off the bat with the built in camera, chances are it will not. From my experience so far, if your phone has a headphone jack, your best option will be the Edutige cable, as it will work with Android operating system by default because the system will think is a microphone headset input.
    If anyone knows how to "fix" or "trick" android into accepting the cable automatically, or be selectable for use with the built in camera app, I am open to suggestions.
    Second, I got the OTG cable and the Sabrent USB audio and it also worked... Sorta.
    I had an LG phone (tribute, cheaper LG) that was doing a weird phase when I plugged in the Edutige cable. I was getting a signal, but the audio had this small amount of phasing that was perceptible. I grabbed the OTG USB (micro USB in this case) and plugged in the Sabrent audio dongle. for some reason, it automatically tricked the phone into thinking it was a headset and it displayed the headset Icon right on the status bar! I then went ahead and fired up the built in camera and... perfect audio, and with just a regular TRS cable going into the Sabrent's mic input. Not only am I getting perfect audio, but I also get to plug in headphones and do a couple of test runs to check my levels and make sure everything is working properly. I tried it on 2 more phones, and it didn't work (even with e Cinema FV5 software).
    In my case, I decided to get a "new" phone, so I picked up a used unlocked LG V40 (which it's a very content creator friendly phone with tons of options) and the Edutige cable performed flawlessly. The SC7 cable made by Rode also worked great! (and its the cheapest option for 11 bucks or so...) Then again, this particular LG has an option to select an input in the built in camera software, and is a phone with very advanced audio features like limiter, HIFI audio, software selectable gain and even frequency roll-off.
    Bottom line:
    Apple's Iphones will have the advantage always due to the fact that there is only one company that makes them, therefore, anything that is apple related (MFI certified) will have better chances of working with the hardware simply because there is ONLY one OS and its made by the same company that makes the phone. In fact, BBC uses Iphones for mobile reporting and mobile news gathering (for those moments you cant carry a big bulky "look at me!!" camera) being the Iphone 6s plus the minimum requirement, which happens to be the last Iphone to come with an audio jack input.
    With Androids? not so much. Every company has different variants of the OS, and some will have features others don't even within the same brand. My best suggestion? take any of these cable input options with you to the cell phone store, explain to the salesperson what you are trying to do and test out a few that meet your camera usage needs. this will definitely save you the disappointment of finding out after you have already committed to a purchase.

I regretted getting it until I found this!!!! It is totally worth the $$, but not many people know how to make it work like you!!! LIFESAVER. Now I can do IG live workouts in my echo-ing dance studio and people can hear crystal clear!!! THANK YOU

    Hi Joseph!
    I wanted to thank you for making this super helpful video, which I watched multiple times while trying to figure out how to connect my Sennheiser G4 wireless receiver pack to my iPhone 13 Pro. While I didn’t end up going with any of your 3 suggestions - I found out about Movo’s MC3 TRS-TRRS adapter (equivalent of Rode’s SC4), which worked perfectly plugged into the Apple lightning to headphone adapter - it was your explanation of details like how Sennheiser’s cable is proprietary and “true line level in” etc that helped a newbie like me understand the science behind what I needed! It’s been so frustrating because very few videos on TH-cam deal with this issue, and no one at the Apple store knows anything either. Several other TH-cam clips unplugged the Sennheiser cable and replaced it with a TRS-TRRS patch cable (the curly red wire one like the Rode SC7), which did not work for me at all.
    Not sure if it’s because this video is a few years old, but I think the combo I used (Movo’s MC3/Rode SC4 + Apple lightning to headphone adapter) is a simpler and much cheaper workaround now than these three? It cost me under $20 total.
    Anyway, thanks!

    Joseph! Awesome video. The Lightning to USB 3.0 Camera Adapter and
    USB Audio Interface worked perfectly with my Sennheiser wireless system. I just had an exclusive interview with VP Kamala Harris in Selma and my main camera - Canon XF405 - was live streaming the program. They surprised me with a one-on-one and the only solution was my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Audio was BAD. There was a loud generator nearby and I was screwed. But this definitely solves my future issues!

    Just tested connecting a Sennheiser EK100 G2 receiver to my Galaxy S8 Android phone. When just connecting the Shield and Tip from the EK100 to the S and 2nd R in TRRS ,then the recorded audio is very distorted and there are clicks and pops all over the place. By adding a small capacitor in series with the signal (tip from EK100 TRS to S on the phone TRRS) then you block the 1.7V DC voltage that is present on the phone jack. Then the audio is fine and you can send easily at the +6dBu setting in the EK100. Tested in the stock Samsung voice recorder and Filmic pro. I just used what I had lying around, a 0.1uF 160VAC which is probably way over-rated but it works.

    Hi there - Thank you so much for this helpful video. With the help of you video I was able to create this set up:
    -iPhone 11
    -Sony UWP - D Series receiver and transmitter
    -DPA Headset microphone
    -USB Stereo Sound Adaptor with Apple Adaptor
    - Sony stereo mini BMP cable to plug receiver into sound adaptor.
    I get sound! However, The playback volume is really low. I am not sure if this something in the iPhone that I need to change or within the receiver. I've tried increasing the out level in the receiver up to +12 db, and I made sure the iPhone volume is all the way up when recording. Do you have any suggestions on what might be going on?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some microphones output a really low level. Make sure the transmitter is at the right levels (as loud as possible without clipping), and the receiver too. I am not familiar with the Sony but it could be as simple as the BMP cable needs a different model. Does that mic and cable work fine with a dSLR?

    Hi I'm trying to connect my iPhone7 to a Fulaim receiver. I've connected it through the receiver to a CN-20 Mobile Phone Adapter, which is then connected to a TRS-TRRS Adapter, which is then connected to a lightning cable adapter. I plug the cable into my iPhone but it's not picking it up as a microphone, but instead, it thinks it's a "Dock speaker". How do I change it so my iPhone can pick up the audio FROM the wire instead of trying to use it as a speaker? Thank you!

    The "Cabling" section at the bottom doesn't ever seem to indicate that you're recording with most of the cables you're discussing...?
    I own the LC-C35. It was the first stereo mic Lightning adapter I bought.
    After I got it, I tested it and immediately exchanged it, because the noise floor was so high that I assumed the cable had to be faulty.
    When I got the replacement, it had the exact same issue.
    So either I'm extremely unlucky or the LC-C35 has an incredibly high level of self-noise.

    Thanks for the video Joseph and can you please offer advice: I have the DJI OSMO MOBILE 3 and with too much weight from cables the gimbal does not work!!! No one has made a video on the subject and you know what you are talking about! Thanks for any advice

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's tough. A buddy once managed to balance with the cables/adapters hanging off an iPhone on a gimbal by adding some counterweight on the other side. In theory all you should have to do is slide the phone the other way to center the weight, but I think then the phone hit the gimbal. So counterweight was the only way to go. That was a while ago though, so you'd have to experiment.

    • @cheflukemacleod
      @cheflukemacleod 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@photojoseph Thanks for the reply Joseph! I have heard of the counter balancing idea before but you end up with a makeshift heap of junk gimbal that is not at all nimble. Perhaps one could make videos with a blue tooth phone ear piece, or do you know of a constructor that does bluetooth attached mics? Or do you have any other suggestions for chefs in a noisy kitchen trying to explain recipes? To thank you for your advice and time, can we make a recipe for you?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quality Bluetooth mics don't exist for lots of reasons, including reliability and range. If I were doing chefs in a noisy kitchen, I'd mic up the chefs with a recorder, like this Tascam DR10 geni.us/BY0GVgg - the in post you can sync up the good recorded audio with the crappy iPhone captured audio. Plus that way if you have multiple chefs talking at once, you'll have unique captures of each one, letting you balance them in post. If you can't do that, I'd look at the RODE Wireless Go since you can quickly clip the lav mic onto your subject geni.us/8jV8A - you will still need to connect it to the iPhone though, but I _think_ (I have not tested this myself) that you might be able to just go from the RODE receiver pack using a RODE SC7 TRS-TRRS cable geni.us/fobYLl which then plugs into the Apple Headphone Lightning adapter. If the SC7 is too short, use any TRS cable and then the SC4 TRS to TRRS converter geni.us/F8sl2 (and then to the iPhone cable). That _should_ work since this mic is designed for mobile phone use, but again you'll have to test it. And thanks for the offer, but I'm good, thank you ;-)

    • @photojoseph

      Bluetooth won’t be real-time. You’d want a mic pack that has a headphone jack on it like this photojoseph.com/moment/comica-dual-wireless-lavalier-mic-system/20106 or what might work, although I don’t remember now, is if you’re using the USB adapter solution, and if you’re using an app like filmic Pro, you might be able to route the monitoring through that adapter. Maybe. I’d have to test it as I don’t recall now.

When I bought the Saramonic my phone was an iPhone 7 plus. There wasn't enough memory to get me through anything I was doing. Not sure if thats why I cant get things to work . All I want to use in an iPhone. I have the Moment Lens"s to make it better. But I have all the adapters you mentioned except the Saramonic one. What a learning rabbit hole all this is so far. But also important... how do I adjust the gain .... they are awful. If I am supposed to use an app there isn't any thing that is saying that in the kit. I bought the MV88 microphone to use with my iphone and it would not fit with the moment case. The MV88 also gets a loud buzz when we out doing Facebook Live broadcasts . The only thing that has cleared it up is to delete the app then reinstall. All that is hindsight. I would just like to use the Saramonic, my DJI Osmo 3 , moment wide angle lens and run. I can’t possibly test every possible combination; all I can tell you is that what I showed here works, with that hardware.

    Hi, Joseph. First, thank you for taking the time to actually address this issue. My Sennheiser G2 system is fantastic, and I so very much want to be able to use it for iphone video, so I bought the Edudige EWL-100 cable. Can you tell me how you ended up getting such loud and clear audio with your Edudige cable setup? I have been testing the cable with my iphone 6, using the lightning adapter into the phone, and the best I can do just a very low-level audio (-42 db) with a lot of hiss. I've upped the output settings on the g2 receiver, as well as the trasmitter - just trying combinations to see if anything pops. No joy so far. I have been recording using the camera app, and then inspecting the clips in Premiere Pro. I do not have Filmic pro, but will add it if that is somehow the key. Thank you! Mike

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not FiLMiC. Some mics just output at very low levels. I have never used the G2 so I can't say for sure, but I'd guess that's the case. You should reach out to Edutige and see what they say. You may be able to insert a boost of sorts… first talk to Edutige, then call Sweetwater and talk to someone there about how to solve it. Those guys are super knowledgable.

      Hm, I've never tried that… I think the 3.5mm audio port on your MacBook Pro is just like the one on the iPhone, meaning it's TRRS, which means it's both audio out and in (headphone and mic). So this would not work without further adapters; namely a TRRS to TRS adapter. BUT I wouldn't go that way… instead I'd use even a cheap USB audio interface, like an iMic or even this little Aukey geni.us/gJkC instead - or if you want a better quality interface, a proper USB audio interface would get you a much better signal.

      PhotoJoseph Thanks again! Have you got a Genuis link for the Aukey adapter mentioned. The one you included is for the Sabrent that I’ve already ordered.

    How do you check your levels to make sure you're not too low or loud??

      Meters. The built in Voice Memos app is good for that, or use FiLMiC Pro if you have it.

    So the Edutige ewl-001 is out of stock everywhere for a long time, and I don't think the company will make any more, after emailing the company several times with no response. Wondering if there is another solution besides the Sarmonica adapter.

    Hi Joseph, I purchased XSW-D portable Lavalier set to use with iPhone. I didn't order the Saramonic cable yet, thought I could make use of the lightning to audio jack that comes with the iPhone and connect to the Sennheiser proprietary cable. Obviously this doesn't work. Do you know why? When I use the apple's lightning to audio adapter with a headphone such as Bose noise cancelling, for doing phone calls, the audio from the Bose microphone works... Thank you in advance..

    PhotoJoseph....Does the Edutige EWL-001 in conjunction with the iPhone dongle work with the Sennheiser EW 100 G2 without anything additional for an iPhone (iPhone 7 in my instance), correct?

      Sorry, isn't that exactly what I showed here? I recorded this a year ago, but if that's what I showed, then that's what works. If that's not what I showed, please tell me what's different that you're asking

      @@photojoseph Thank you for taking time to answer me back. It was clear that it worked for many systems - but it was not reported/shown that it worked for the "proprietary" setup of the Sennheiser of the "double left" output. So the question I had was...can you plug the Edutige cord directly into the Sennheiser and plug the other end in the iPhone dongle and have it work? Thanks again for taking time help me understand. Cheers.

    Hi Joseph, how can you link a wireless ew100 g3 system to a macbook? Thanks!

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should just connect direct to the headphone/mic port, but if not, use the tiny little USB audio interface and that should be the only additional thing you need!

    Thanks for that. However, I'm still not able to figure out how I can receive the sound into my android phone and record it there. So, transmitter to receiver to android phone is what I'm interested in. Do you happen to have anything on that topic? I appreciate it, thank you.

The mic pack comes with a cable that looks like it made to connect the receiver to my Iphone via my iphone adapter, but when i plug the the Iphone to the receiver , Im not getting the sound to from my lavaliere mic. The Iphone mic is still picking up the sound . Do I need the Saramonic LC-c35 or one of the configurations you spoke of in your video make this work or am i missing something, thanks for your help.
