    I am a DIY hobbyist and picked up a gallon for a build-in cabinets I made from 3/4 unfinished birch ply, poplar, and ash, all sanded smooth. I am curious if primer should be applied prior to spraying Gallery. Thank you.

    • @GBorders1
      @GBorders1  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would always prime bare wood unless I was applying stain and finish.
      A nice thin primer like shellac or a good oil based primer that sands well is important.
      Your top coat will only be as smooth as what you apply it to.

    Thanks for the video, I bought three gallons of this as a DIYer, trying to make sure I understand all this before I start practicing on the garage cabinets and then "for real" on the kitchen cabinets! I was worried I'd need the 2.0 tip, but looks like the 1.3 and 1.8 work for you, and I have those.

      Thanks. Shortly after doing this test we had a full kitchen cabinet refinish with the project.
      If you want to see how that went, see this video:

    Have you ever used the KemAqua+ products?
    I spray cabinets with a 5 stage Graco procart, edge HVLP gun, and 2 coats BIN shellac followed by 2 or 3 coats of KemAqua+. I just recently bought the Graco Quickshot cordless and am about to spray my next project (oak kitchen) with Gallery Series for the 1st time. I've looked up a ton of videos and yours is the only one I've found so far that mimics my process. Thank you!
    I'm really curious about your opinion on how gallery relates to the KemAqua in regards to longevity and durability.
    Your scratch test was inconclusive in my opinion, overnight isn't near long enough for the product to cure.

    • @GBorders1
      @GBorders1  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have never used KemAqua. I have been meaning to get some and do a similar example video, but things have been a bit too busy to get the videos out that I would like.
      I do wonder how the Quick shot will preform and would worry that atomization might suffer as the battery runs down, but I guess testing/monitoring battery status would determine that.
      While I know the product was not nearly cured after just one overnight, I did want to demonstrate how well it did with such a short cure time. That rapid setting also comes into play regarding how soon handling, installing doors, and all that can happen after refinishing.
      I also wanted to demonstrate the coverage with and without primer. We had done a previously painted project since and found that even with previously painted, priming provided a superior finish and coverage. Despite what I was told.

    I may give this a try. I have used the Sherwin Williams Emerald paint, and I had trouble getting a smooth finish.

    • @GBorders1
      @GBorders1  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have had pretty good luck with the urathain version of Emerald on trim. This GAller Seris seems better, but then again a spray finish almost always is. A lot ot time the finish is a result of the prep.

    I love the hvlp finish just don’t know if I could go from spraying cabinets with airless to hvlp seems so slow . Opinion ?

    • @GBorders1
      @GBorders1  ปีที่แล้ว

      HVLP is slower than airless. Also, less overspray is less and cleanup is quicker and easier. I personally don't think it is so much slower that in an average cabinet, furniture, or similar project makes such a huge difference. Of course, I wouldn’t want to paint a home exterior or large fence with an HVLP, but for cabinets and the like I don't think it is a big deal. I do have and use both systems.

    • @GBorders1
      @GBorders1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

It still we be a choice I don’t feel I could make . I did however have some emerald left over from a job that I used on the hood of the work van . Was curious how well it would hold up so I didn’t prime , didn’t even dust the surface off just got a foam roller and rolled it on . I’m in texas it’s very hot . Then winter we get the ice and cold . It’s held up to the heat , and cold , rain , snow . Washing the vehicle . After 2 years of that it’s just now barely coming off . I mean very small area . The rest is still solid . On this example I used the 1.3 needle and cap set. We are using a 1.8 on a kitchen cabinet project we are working on now and as the product dries, I really cannot see a difference. Of course, with the larger size cap, the greater chance you have of over application and runs or sags, but as you may know you move the gun more quickly. So, the results will be similar in this case and the process just a little bit quicker.

    There is a youtube out there comparing this to Renner 765. The 765 dominates - probably due to about 40% more solids. Also sprayable with HVLP.

    • @GBorders1
      @GBorders1  ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand Renner is an excellent product also. I simply have not had the opportunity to test it. The distribution and availability of the Sherwin products is a plus though.
      Centurion Wood Coatings is also supposed to be excellent. THey are headquartered near me in McKinney and I will be ordering some product to test soon. Things are pretty busy at the moment but it is planned.
      Stay tuned.

    • @ILruffian

      Consensus seems to be that Renner and Centurion are better products. That said, Gallery Series is *available* at a moment's notice. Run short? Grab another can. Renner seriously needs to step up its distribution game.

    How did gallery series lay out? Is it good with just one coat? Orange peel on the first coat much? How does it sand out? What grit? You call it a lacquer but from reading the information on their website it is a one component polyurethane. Excellent video thank you for this review

    • @GBorders1
      @GBorders1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This product lays out very, very well. At the end of the clip I added a couple of stills and tried to demonstrate the durability by scratching the surface with a pick and a screw driver.
      Sherwin Williams recommends two coats, and I guess I do also. Coverage looked pretty decent in one coat, but you always run coverage issues with one coat. Not to mention it dries quite quickly. To the touch in maybe 15 minutes, and to sand and re-coat in just 45 minutes.
      I sanded to 150 for prep and lightly sanded between coats at 220, although I think I may use 320 on an actual project.
      In my original talks with my local rep and the people at Sherwin Williams everyone called it waterborne lacquer too. Their official documentation they refer to it as Gallery Series™ Waterborne Topcoat.
      From the Sherwin Williams data sheet:
      Gallery Series™ Waterborne Topcoat 20
      Gloss is an acrylic finish for interior, vertical wood
      products with the performance of a 2K finish in a
      1K formula. This waterborne topcoat is designed
      for use as a self-sealing topcoat. The nonyellowing finish is fast dry to sand and recoat
      while providing a durable finish with excellent
      hardness and resistance to common household
      chemicals compared to traditional acrylic latex
      and nitrocellulose finishes.
      Meets KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers
      Association) test requirements for hardness and
      resistance to household chemicals when applied
      properly.

      @@GBorders1 thank you for the response. I’m not sure if you have tried Sherwin Williams Kem Aqua and how it compares to gallery series. My issue with Gallery Series is how expensive it is. At $120 per gallon I can get 2 gallons of Kem Aqua and customers want the best but they also don’t want to over spend. I appreciate the fact that the KCMA has put their seal of approval on this product but the price point sucks to be frank. Again thank you for the video demonstration of this new product

      @Alan-yd5ng ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve done a few kitchens with it since it came out. It’s pretty good. The coverage isn’t fantastic, always use a primer with no matter what the store says it’s always a necessary step. It’s almost impossible to touch up as it’s meant just for a spray so must be finished 100% as dabs with a brush won’t work. If Renner is 100 this is about a 75. I would say it’s the best cabinet system as far as residential paint stores go a little bit of a step up from scuff x

      I am pretty impressed also. As Alan commented, I think coverage may be a weakness as we are working on a cabinet project that had glazing on the doors, drawers, and carcasses. The areas I did not prime fully the coverage was less than great. The glazing is was coffee brown and we are top coating with Alabaster sheen 20.
      The glazing color bleeds through after 2 coats where it was not thoroughly primed.

    Why would you even shoot a coat of finish when it hasn't even been shellaced? Seems like a complete waste of time 😅 And you pointed out there's no runs or orange peel, again they're should be any runs because your shooting the door down...

    • @GBorders1
      @GBorders1  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The rep told us that only bare wood needed to be primed, this had a previous finish. And of course, I wanted to see the results, which as seen is significant. Regarding how the product lays out, you can get orange peel regardless of the orientation of the surface when spraying, and sage (or runs) can also occur regardless of surface orientation. And as we know, runs and sags are more a function of process rather than product.

    • @nothingsimpostleble1593
