He's Sinhalese (he sings in Sinhala) and from my country Sri Lanka. His stunning look which you see here is something he developed only a couple of years back when he came back to to the industry after a few years of silence. His work is prolific and he usually composes his own songs, all exceptionally melodic and musically rich. I suggest you Google and listen to a couple more songs of him if you can, especially his older stuff which are incredible. You can find most of them sung in this episode of the Sri Lankan "Coke Red" program itself actually. Even though they might not have English subtitles, his vocals and music alone are serendepetic. As for the song itself, I'd like to give you a bit of context. Hope you don't mind a bit of a long read. It's about a popular stage-drama in Sri Lanka called "Sinhabahu". The drama is about the legend of the ancestery of the Sinhalese people of Sri Lanka. In short, it's said that in ancient India there lived a princess called Suppadevi who was abducted by a lion and bred, giving birth to 2 children, a boy named Sinhabahu and a girl named Sinhasivali. When he was 16, Sinhabahu fled the lion cave with his mother and sister and later killed the lion for a reward. Becoming king, he married his sister and ruled a new kingdom, giving birth to many children. One of these princes was called Vijaya, who later invaded Sri Lanka and established a Sinhalese kingdom here. The song presents a sort of alternate take on the tale. Wherein legend potrays Sinhabahu as being a bit of a brave charachter for having fled the cave, the song says that he fled because he was scared. The title "Man Sinhayata bayai nangiye" means Sister, I'm scared of the lion. It also references the play itself, mentioning the anticipation of the stage-screen being lifted, so the writer might be writing as an audience member of the play. The symbol of the lion is actually special to us Sinhalese as it's considered the animal of our race, "Sinha" means lion in Sinhala and it's also the main symbol on the flag of Sri Lanka. I'm of course no song expert and there might be different meanings to this song than what I know. But I thought it'd be good to give you some idea of what he was singing about since there were no subtitles unfortunately. Cheers!
