    Hi Bret,
    One thing you did forget to mention is that it is crucial to ensure an external wastegate is correctly positioned on a manifold, so that the exhaust gases don't bypass it at high rpm. I have seen a 46mm one offer zero bleed off at high rpm from poor positioning, just because the exhaust gases are travelling so fast that they completely bypass the wastegate. We even removed the wastegate completely to prove the point LOL.

    I have a V7 JDM WRX so I am needing to put a JDM downpipe on them. I found a company who does both a catless vs catted and I originally wanted the catted because I was worried about the smell and boost creep butr decided to go with catless due to cost. However, watching this has made me again re evaluate my choices. Is it cheaper to just buy a High Flow cat and be done with it, or cheaper to grab a Catless downpipe and do an internal to external wastegate conversion? I am planning on replacing my TD04 with a VF30 at the same time as I do the Downpipe.
    Also, with JDM WRXs, do you need to replace the Upipe or can the stock one be used with external wastegates?

      @BJWTF 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im looking at getting an EFR 8374 twin scroll internal wastegate for my 2jz, I hear the factory actuator is crap but I don't know how true that is. Turbo smart already made a 2 port actuator upgrade for the EFR series turbo already.

    • @numinous4789
      @numinous4789 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Jeppesen That's the first time I heard of issues with the EFR wastegate actuators. All I've ever heard about them is how awesome they are, next-level, etc. After all, they are run on F1 cars, so they're definitely viewed very highly in the professional racing community. Perhaps it was an old WG actuator design that was revised? Was the person(s) saying it's crap reputable and speaking from actual practical experience?

    • @BJWTF
      @BJWTF 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Numinous oh I didn't know they've revised it, I'll have a dig around some more thanks for the heads up. It's the Rotary guys that's saying the actuator isn't very good at higher rpm the flap would open abit as there's no 2nd port in the actuator for the boost to hold it shut and they would get boost drop off.

    • @numinous4789
      @numinous4789 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Jeppesen Hmmmm, well that could be a lot of things. On my platform (Mazdaspeed 3), we drool over these and have had great luck. I'd personally go with an EFR7163 (we're 2.3 liters) and have it tuned for 500whp.. It's an amazing, fast spooling turbo, with very low boost threshold and amazing transient response. Some other guys talked about using the EFR8374, but I think it's too big for us for anything other than a dyno queen, given our displacement. Regardless, awesome turbos.

    • @BJWTF
      @BJWTF 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Numinous thanks for the info man nice to get feed back from someone who have actually used it, I got a Nissan Z32 with a 2jz swapped. Being a 3 liter I think 8374 would match it alright.

    I have a Q: I have seen some cars with an exhaust system, but they have been spitting flames right under the engine at redline. Does that mean that they had an external wastegate that was throwing the gasses right into atmosphere?

    • @diego_solis

      I have the same question and sadly after 5 years no one answered your question

    • @Z4G.
      @Z4G. ปีที่แล้ว

      @@diego_solis Yeah thats most likely an external wastegate. A pipe going from the manifold that lets out exhaust pressure to adjust the boost pressure.

  • @crabapple1974
    @crabapple1974 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great concept and I am really learning stuff from these videos eventhough I thought I at least had an ok grasp on how these things work.
    I understand that this is sort of the generalized version of how it works but I assume a lot of these "truths" vary depending on application. For instance dumping boost into the exhaust is that generally always detrimental? I am sure it depends on the diameter and flow characteristics of the exhaust since sometimes a larger volume of gas in a narrower pipe has a higher flow speed and hence more inertia (up to a point) and that actually helps clear gases more efficiently. This is analog to situation in the intake where an optimal portsize is not always the largest one but the one that keeps the speed of the gasses up without beeing so restrictive it saps power (optimal portsize varies with amount of gasflow). Same with dumping boost it in proximity to the turbine blades. I am sure in a factory setup it is "good enough" but could it not be constructed so the dumped boost actually improves the flow/pressure-conditions after the turbine blades? Can the flow be made to be more laminar? Just an idea :) Keep this up.

    • @robertd8164
      @robertd8164 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A properly sorted External wastegage should in theory act like exhaust headers ( ie a mild scavenging effect ) However at extremely high flow rates of exhaust gas you would be introducing a turbulent effect causing a the exhaust gases to slow down...............Internal gates have their places.......up to mildly modified street cars you wouldn't really notice the difference and the money would be better spent on other areas.

    • @crabapple1974
      @crabapple1974 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert D I am sure you are right. I just find it fascinating that these are actually very complicated engineering problems where so much depend on the specific application. A pro like Brett who both have the technical knowledge and experience has to "dumb" it down in order to fit it into this format. I would not mind a longer more in depth video similar to "Engineering explained" :)

    • @TheCremeSupreme
      @TheCremeSupreme 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The external will be louder if you vent it to atmosphere, whats known as a screamer pipe but if it is just dumped into the exhaust it will sound more or less the same

    • @GandalfPipeWizard
      @GandalfPipeWizard 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on how you run the dump if you run an external set up. If you run it back into the exhaust it will sound much like an internal wastegate and won't make much of a difference. If you dump to atmosphere you are basically running a straight pipe everytime your wastegate opens. So it will sound like your exhaust normally does until you hit full boost, your wastegate opens, and it gets a lot louder. Wastegate dumps are sometimes called screamer pipes for this reason.

    • @devalde33
      @devalde33 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      but i thought the wastegate closed when you reached full boost , isnt it like that ? (im also new to this stuff sorry if i didnt understood )

    • @GandalfPipeWizard
      @GandalfPipeWizard 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nah valdez Well, you understand that a turbo uses exhaust gases to spool up, right? Think of it this way, a wastegate pretty much literally "wastes" exhaust gas once you reach your target boost pressure. It opens in order to let exhaust gas through without further spooling the turbo to prevent over boosting. That gas is "wasted" because it's not being used. Think about it this way. You want to fill up the sink with water. You turn the water on until it reaches a certain level. If the water is exhaust gas you can't turn it off, right? You don't want to overfill it, so you have to open the drain (wastegate) in order to maintain a constant level. the water is coming in and the extra is being wasted down the drain to try to maintain a constant level. Might not be 100% accurate but it should help to understand it.

      They are legal if it is engineered. They do the same thing emissions wise as an internal gate when plumbed back, however its just illegal purely because they are non stock mechanical parts. E.g. If you welded shut an internal gate, and installed a plumbed back external gate. It would be illegal, but extremely easy to engineer.

      This is pretty much what this whole "Go fast Brett" series is as with his blow off valve segment he didn't even touch on wide open throttle turbo surge and instead pretty much said if your turbo flutters when the throttle is closed it is bad and you should buy my product, which infact when the throttle is closed and when the turbo "flutters" the use of a recirc valve/blow off valve is to stop reverb through the Airflow meter/MAF to cause an incorrect reading and cause the car to stall out when coming to a complete stop.
      Even Turbo Yoda said or anyone who is switched on with turbo's knows flutter isn't bad.
