    I was in New York at the beginning of September, in Washington Park, I saw and met Bethany. She was getting a cigarette under the bench that me and my fiancé were sitting on. She was so kind and respectful as she went to grab it. I could tell by that small interaction we had with her that she was a sweet soul. She has a dog with her and that made me happy knowing she had someone to care for 💗. I couldn’t believe it when I saw this video this morning. When you first see the dazed wandering eyes, the sores, the tortured physical discomfort manifesting itself in the awkward body movements, you think "omg, how is this person going to even get part way through this interview...". But then hearing how functional Bethany's cognitive abilities still are, and how observant and reasonably eloquent she still is (given the abuse, drugs, hard life etc), that was a real eye opener to see those contrasts, and how the rough exterior camouflages a kind and sentient interior.

      Man.. I'm an ex heroin addict myself. Started with roxacets. I'm not speaking for/about Bethany, but I dont feel like a victim🙏 I made a choice to try that first roxacet. Didn't know where, or what it would lead me to, but I can't sit here and say or feel like a victim. I think that mentality in regards to addiction is counterproductive. It places blame on the substance, on this society, and not on the person. I buried 9 close friends, 25+ acquaintances. They're the reason I'm not a victim. I'm one of the blessed few to make it out🙏 Theyre the victims IMO. So do you need to die to be a victim to this? No, but I think it can be a problem to just treat this like each addict had no part in their own downfall. It's a disease, but its a disease you have to make some type of choice to sign up for. You dont just wake up a heroin addict like people do with most other diseases🙏
      Just my two cent. I dont mean to offend anybody. If you wanna feel like a victim to this, by all means, but I dont think there's anything positive in that, other than placing blame onto something other than yourself. It's the same type of thing where addicts do xyz and then blame xyz solely on the drugs. Like no.. The drugs are the motivation, the encouragement, they're not the culprit. You are🙏 There's too much deflection in this. YOU wanna get clean and stay clean it takes taking responsibility for YOUR actions. 6 years clean and I'm never going back. I owe it to everybody I lost🙏 R.I.P Hailey, Matt,Joe,Eddie,Karen, Amanda, Steve, Tom, Alberto, and the many others ravaged by this🙏 all those broken families🙏 I have some type of survivors guilt for even making it out. Truly wish it was Hailey instead. She was Fucking 18.

    This interview really touched my heart. I had a work accident back in 2001 and needed 2 back surgeries and my drs prescribed opiates like tic tacs as well and I loved them. A few years later I too was told “this was my last prescription “ and I was in shock! The one difference is I got pregnant and wasn’t about to start looking for heroin. I wish I could give you a big hug Bethany. You’re in my thoughts!

    • @mattjack3983
      @mattjack3983 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah i know all about that as well. In 1998 I was shot 4 times. Underwent a couple surgeries, and spent about 6 weeks in the hospital. And for YEARS after that I was prescribed literally as much of whatever I wanted as I wanted. I, too, loved my opiates. And when the doctor told me one day that he was filling out my last script, I was literally DEVASTATED. And unfortunately, I became a heroin addict not long after that script was gone. Ive been clean now for almost 7 years. But it always amazes me how many people I meet whose stories seem to be exactly like mine. Just regular people who had some kind of accident or injury or something in the late 90s/early 2000s, back when doctors would prescribe u 30 percoset for a skinned knee. Its absolutely unreal how many "addicts" were made during that time. And alot of us didn't even realize how addicted we truly were until the scripts were stopped!

      Also just barely escaped serious addiction but mine was Percocet prescribed after my c-section... Didn't realize it but I was given a huge bottle and later started to get one here and there, for a headache, for cramps etc. One day I caught myself getting home after an annoying day and as soon as I got in the door went for the medicine cabinet. I stopped myself in shock, like WTF GIRL YOU NOT EVEN IN PAIN! I honestly dont know how often I did that, it was on auto pilot and I realized I liked how they felt. I got scared and flushed the rest (ik) don't remember if I had any withdrawal stuff but I had almost finished the bottle by then, with a baby girl💔

I looked forward to seeing them every Sunday, as much they did, seeing those of us that help feed them. Bethany has a beautiful heart, I have compassion for the homeless, you can never convince me that they deliberately chose this lifestyle. I don’t believe they set out to become an addict or homeless, sadly we live in a world where no one cares about the homeless or the situations they’re in. What’s really sad is, yes, people can walk pass a homeless person, totally ignore them as if they’re not even human, not knowing their stories, but are always so quick to judge. OODA loop. Orient, Observe, Decide, Act. You see a thing. You try to assess it or identify it. You then decide if you can take action and if so what. Then you act.

    I've watched a lot of these interviews & I don't comment but I have to say this person has such a wonderful heart, it saddens me that people around her are missing the chance to get to know her. Really a smart & kind hearted person. I wish her all the best.

    Bethany, your story of Ellaby (hopefully I spelled that right) has me absolutely in tears. This is so relatable on many levels, the human condition is so devastating at this time. People have forgotten the meaningfulness of a moment of their time, or the power of grace that just a smile holds. You conveyed this so absolutely beautifully, I’d love to be your friend.

    Loved the story when she went off on that woman and got some cash out of it! Bethany speaks like a leader and has so much confidence despite the conditions she found herself in. So right about the game of "life" being dealt poorly to folks

    15 year old afab trans person and csa “survivor??” here, I’ve watched so many of these videos and this one hits close to home in a different way then some of the rest. I can see her light and knowing that others can see it too is amazing. Please do an update video when that time comes. I wish I could financially assist her some super cool wealthy adult should do it because I can’t

    Bethany, I see and hear you!! I wish everyone could, you are so sensitive and kind, not to mention very intelligent and articulate, more so then most people! I wish you well ,and pray that you get help for your addiction, and can get off the streets! You are a speaker, and should have a platform. You could help a lot of people. and teach tolerance of people that are different. I would rather sit and have a conversation with you, than half the people I am aquinted with! I wish you well ,you deserve it, you are a wonderful human being, sending love!

    Awe I really like Bethany, she is so wise. Definitely an old soul. She understands the world, physically and spiritually. She chose this path and is living this experience and learning. I hope part of her path includes recovery. I'd love to see her sober. She has a future is she decides to get clean.

    As much as I can see the kind, sensitive spirit in her, I can understand why people might struggle to interact with her. Especially if they have kids with them ... it's very confronting and people who are clearly high can be very unpredictable. People are not necessarily discounting her, it is probably fear that prevents them from being open.

    • @Gram72534
      @Gram72534 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      it's a unwarranted fear, the bad people usually come in sheeps clothing. I do understand what your saying, but again it seems to me that the ones we trust can be the worst among us i.e. politicions leaders people in power the rich and certain churchs. I think that's why this channel is so helpful. just my opion, have a good day. I think certain levels of intoxication are good to avoid as well, ecpecially when someone is drunk but heroin makes a person slow and weak, so not quite as dangerous.

    • @CatalinaFOIA
      @CatalinaFOIA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I agree, the jarring scattered unpredictable body movements alone would keep me away, I'd never subject my child to this. Nope. I protect her at all cost. Will she eventually see other segments of society whom are less fortunate? Yes. It's called education. Education is age based, no way would bringing a child around homeless people out in the elements be appropriate. Just listen to all of his stories, "A person just runs up and busts a glass bottle over my head, out of nowhere. I can't even get cops to stop and help me."

    • @Gram72534
      @Gram72534 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@CatalinaFOIA you Are absolutely correct, I have a daughter and I am super over protective with her as well. Although those things your bringing up are valid and on point, we are talking about letting a child interact with a person. It sounded like a nice morning I assume there were other out (NYC) and I'm sure the parent or parents were very close and observant of there surroundings. So I agree with both sides I guess. I was born in NY and there's many places you should never go with kids, but it's also impossible to not come across dangerous things. Idk, either way it should probably change?

    • @cherrytie1060
      @cherrytie1060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, It was likely a slow and gradual change for her. Where as if she could see a side by side of 22 years ago vs today.
      Your point might click for her if she could see that! She is nearly terrifying to a child or a sheltered/privileged person.

    a common thread in many of these videos is a messed up and dysfunctional childhood. Parents take note: you need to be involved in your children's lives in a positive, nurturing way. Don't be a half baked parent.

    I truly wish the best for you, Bethany. She seems like such a genuine woman who has been given a very unfortunate set of events In her life just like many of us yet she continues to remain optimistic when it comes to humanity. I hope she never gives up and finds a way out of this vicious cycle of drug abuse so she can make plenty more changes in this world with her pure heart. I wish I had the pleasure of personally telling her that she is seen, she is beautiful and she is loved. If people could hate without reason then we could love without reason.
