- Last year, sci-fi show Altered Carbon joined Sense8, The OA and Luke Cage in being axed from Netflix after just two seasons. What followed was the now-traditional furious fan campaign to save the series from an early death.
But while it’s sad for fans to see a show cut dramatically short, for Netflix, it comes down to the data. In this WIRED Explains, we explore the data metrics Netflix uses to decide whether to renew or axe a TV show.

Because they don’t respect their customers’ experiences.
Because they pay for everything unlike traditional networks
Deciding not to go bankrupt is not disrespecting the customers. I totally agree with their business model for tv shows renewals.
@@tristavlog I'm not convinced this strategy is the best financially. It's short sighted and will hurt them in the long run though. They should at least be doing what they did with Sense 8 and wrapping shows up with movies or special episodes. They're creating a weak back catalogue of unfinished shows and they're straining their relationship with customers. As more 3rd parties pull their content off the services Netflix will just be left with a library of mostly incomplete shows that aren't worth watching. They're setting themselves up for future failure
All that matters is whether the show makes enough money to be profitable. How much the people who do watch think it is, is not important. That being said, if they gave more shows a chance to find its audience, it’s certainly possible that it will be a hit later on.
The problem is that the catalog becomes weaker as you don't want to watch that show later on if it's incomplete
I get it. But I wish when they axed a show they would make a feature-length final episode to tie things up.
Blame the writers that gamble their viewers to land another season deal. Netflix gives the writers freedom. So the writers shouldn't leave shows deliberately in cliffhangers when they don't know if they will get another season deal or not. Writers can address this issue in multiple ways, but sadly some don't care enough for their own fans' experience.
@@shmookins see now reading this after finding out the creators of inside job were told they were gonna get at least two seasons, and then got their show axed after one really makes me upset :,)
Yes and then I cancelled my Netflix subscription
Good
They got Nae nae'd
Jupiters Legacy was cancelled after a single season but it was within on a couple of weeks of launch. It was set up for more seasons so it seems the decision to cancel was made before viewer data had been collected? I question even the annoucement of the decision in this case, why did netflix feel the need to announce when the show hadn't even had a chance to earn some word of mouth? The announcement itself must have had a negative impact on people giving it a chance. Why watch a show thats going nowhere?
It’s really annoying, that we can’t see all the same things like in the US for example 🤬
Use vpn
It's a licensing thing for the most part
Netflix is an American US company.
so many childhood shows just dissolved. i remember seeing one season of one of my favourite shows missing, kinda sad how netflix is slow to add shows but quick to delete them
Netflix cancels shows that take risks to create amazing new content, they cancel those shows so they can fall back into their comfortable money making shows that get high foot traffic by being bland and easy to observe while not actually being good, they just want another big mouth season
Two months is not enough time to decide if a show gets canceled. And what if hit shows like Dark and Stranger Things had been canceled
after a year ? They would have absolutely been ruined. We need to go back to a show a week to give the shows a bigger chance.
I am getting very tired of Netflix in Finland, not only do they cancel good shows but are so slow to add new ones. Any advice on a alternative network besides HBO?
true I loved Norsemen it was fantastically funny. what a terrible loss, and that's just for starters.
pirate your series
At least Amazon had the decency to make a series final season instead of doing a tablecloth pull.
If I like a show on Netflix it’s pretty much guaranteed to be canceled. I’m thinking of doing my own canceling. The latest show I loved is archive 81, which I think is fantastic. Better than American horror story. Cancelled! Pisses me off so much!
I love archive 81 and I feel it can become a cult hit, no ideas why Netflix will cancel it.
@@Baslium probably because not enough people were finishing the season
But now its gotten to the point where i refuse to watch a new series unless it is already finished. No point in filling my head with incomplete stories. Definitely not paying for that.
Truly a catch 22. I’m not so eager to start watching shows that have a major risk of getting cancelled, but if everybody thinks like that, it’s definetly getting cancelled.
Utter disregards for its customer base. Not going to get a penny from me anymore
It used to be the case that series would last forever and gradually fizzle out. Than series finales were invented. I see a lot of shows that people say were cancelled when it actually had an ending. Sure, some like sense 8 and Marco Polo were truly cancelled, but a lot of shows, like queens gambit, were never intended to be long shows. Sometimes for the better. There is nothing worse than dragging a popular show just to milk it for money without actually any original idea on how to keep the story going.
TV networks also have the habit of axing series way soon, Fox being the greatest offender. At least, if a series Fails on netflix it is not because it was allotted a bad timeslot or released episodes in the wrong order (* cough * Firefly * cough *)
Save The OA #SaveTheOA
Another fantastic show cancelled. So angry!
ALTERED CARBON sadly didn't get it's last and 3rd season.
Here after 1899 got cancelled prematurely, so basically they will continue normie shows no matter if it's bad and axe shows that challenges, take risks and actually break new grounds, thankfully they'll cancel my access to Netflix themselves by removing password sharing this year
That's what happens when blind algorithms wear down everything to the lowest common denominator, Netflix is killing art and creativity on TV and deserves to die.
On the other hand they drop a show all at once and you have to wait a year for the next season. Right now Disney is doing better, right after Wanda they put falcon and winter soldier
rip Sense8 :(
I KNOW RIGHT
It's sad if the show is actually good, and some people just haven't realized or had the free time to watch it, and because the show's 28-day metric was simply trimmed not to produced in the future, then quietly sank and died slowly.
just like WIRED Explains who stopped uploading new videos 2 years ago
I frikin hate you Netflix,
For fking cancel my favorite childhood cartoon for 1-4 seasons.
1-4 SEASONS. NETFLIX.
And then you just what cancel a whole entire seasons for p0rn movies?
Yeah, no thx
Edit: sorry for raging..
Don't need to be sorry, I feel the same. My childhood show was removed as well, it was adventure times. What was yours?
Wished there had been a third season of The Punisher ...Got hooked to the characters and story
NCIS with its view number would probably been cancelled after 1-2 season in this day and age, later on it became the most popular drama show on television and is now on season 21, plus some successful spinoffs.
Why have a netflix when most of the shows gets cancelled leaving with a shitty ending...
I'm heart broken about Half Bad getting canceled... 😭☹️😣
The worst show they canceled for me was Marco Polo, they don't even delete it while its incomplete
Same. I really wanted to see how it ended
I hate when Netflix remove seasons and add just new ones which I hate
Poor Anne with an E 😭😢
82 million households watched at least 2 minutes of Bridgerton? Not watched all of it... Do the autoplay previews count towards those 82 million?
It’s like when tv shows move to a different night and time......😮
They dont say the show is canceled they just leave it there just new users thing it is a new show when it came from 2016 and it stopted makong episodes for some years
Netflix home of the cancelled shows?
What about the patriot act ???
I wonder wtf did Netflix do to my anime
Sounds fair. Thanks for the explanation.
But then why was I able to watch 6 seasons of certain something just recently but now there are only 5 seasons??? WHYYYYYYYYY? Y? Yellow
Why?....The 💰. (Saved u four minutes)
My fav anime got deleted😭😭😭😭😭 its Black lagoon

This doesn’t explain why they are slow to cancel bad/unpopular shows
They also canceled my show Pokémon Horizons for no reason
Why did The 100 just dissapear from netflix one day????????
They took of znation like why I didn’t finished it
My netflix account is shut....
It’s simple they cancel after season 2 of all shows. 🤡🤡🤡🌍🌍🌍

Bye bye Netflix
I’m your 666th like
i watched a video from him like 6 years ago and it showed him being injected with something and the title said "become a cyborg" and it literally look so weird
.
Netflix is overrated, VERY overrated.
because blackrock pay them to keep doing DEI woke show ?
Shows get taken off Netflix because their rights expired to them?
Being has a tendency to 'return' to clusters
='the nature of solidarity' -a desire for empathy -(Wave)-(yin)
and also,
Being has a tendency to 'exist' as individuals
='the nature of self-expension' -a desire for breed-(Particle)-(Yang)
Likewise, humans have two elements.
We must realize that we all have both left and right elements
=Solidarity and Self reliance
No one has only one element.
so 'Sum' derived from 'two poles' , (thesis, antithesis, synthesis)
To develop intellect and ethics by harmonizing the two,
It is good to realize it and balance it properly
But A few people polarized the crowd(political partisanship)
without balancing themselves.
And They stole only the sum, only the synthesis from the triangle composition.
Now We all have to get out of this deceptive situation.
This is not the time for us to hate each other.
We have to track down those who have been manipulating us.
Or do not use Netflix.
Netflix is making me mad my fav show is going to leave😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
