Night shift should be spilt into 5pm-2am. Then 12am-8am. And a day shift- nurse 7am-7pm. Night shift is not normal! 12 hours of nightshift is not normal.
At Kaiser hospital near me I saw that there was a 3pm-11pm schedule where you get night shift differential, but half the amount of 11pm-7am. That's my perfect schedule if I worked 24 hours a week for 3 days. I'm still in school and I want to start with 3 12s and save some money first though.
When I'm on night shift, I love my shifts but hate the quality of life! Mostly because it feels like I work 2 days instead of one in terms of making plans with most late twenty/thirty year old something friends and family. When I'm not on night shift though I stay up late anyway and get so much done. If my apartment is clean you better believe I did it between the hours of 10pm-2am lol It's a love/hate relationship.
Night shift almost destroyed me (I worked in a milk processing plant at the time). It caused me severe stomach/throat pains due to a stomach acid imbalance due to being awake in the middle of the night. It also ruined my mental health at the time, and I am never a depressed person. I finally left that job two years ago to go back to school for nursing (clinicals start this fall!) and I cannot even begin to tell you the drastic improvements! It really changed my life for the better. Not everyone is cut out for first, second, or night shifts. Find the shift that is best for you, maybe see if any openings are coming up for your department, even if you can go to second shift, I promise you that it is better than nights!
@@TheNurseNook when you’re up at night, do you go on your phone? If so, try not too. Leave the phone in another room. Also, here on TH-cam, whenever I can’t sleep, I search “stress relieve music, dark screen.” It’s not really music, just sounds and the screen will be dark and you can also throw a blanket over the laptop. Try it and see if that helps😊
I'm a newer grad on nights and for like, 6 months it wrecked me. Depression, no motivation, tired all the time. It's still not great but I'm much better now. But as soon as I'm able to I'm switching to day
My first time on night shift was when I was a tech and my transition to nights was rough too. It got better after about a month on nights but by 6 months in, I was breaking down dude. I hated being off the next day because I’m literally asleep until 4 or 5 and my entire off day is gone lmao. Luckily I got to leave because I started nursing school a few weeks later, but now I’m about to graduate in a few weeks and start BACK on nights as a new grad and I’m dreading it (just the nights part, not the job because I need my coin!). So believe me when I say, I understood every word you meant and you aren’t alone in those feelings.
i’m back on nights after being in a day schedule as a case manager for 18 months however with inpatient nursing i just can’t with day shift everything the people the flow just don’t do it for me…so it’s nights for me lol 😆….i agree it can be difficult to sleep but i will say working out 🏋🏾♂️ before bed helps. love the affirmations
I agree with you ! day shift inpatient is so draining and the pay is bad, maybe if the diff was the same i would have tolerate day shift better but all that work on days and no compensation sucks.
Girl night are HARD!! I WORKED nights for 6 months and I had to stop. it changed me. My skin got horrible, I started to get anxiety, and yes I felt sad on and off probably becuase I wasn't getting my 8 hours sleep the most I will get will be 4 hours . I lose so much weight becuase I felt too tired to eat. I had to stop. It was mentally affecting me. I quit 2 weeks ago and I'm slowly feeling better.
Did night shift for 16 months. Hated it. Hated how it affected my lifestyle. Some people love it but wasn’t for me. I hated being up all night on my days off
What I learned working nights is you have to stay on your sleep schedule when your off. Meaning sleep during the day and stay up at night so that when your working your body is not being thrown off and switching your sleep patterns back and forth.
I'm starting nursing school soon and ever since classes were at home because of covid I have been sleeping between 2am-4am. Sometimes more or less but around there. I wonder if I could handle night shift. Come back home and sleep at 8am, but on days off stay around 2am-4am to go to sleep.
I did nights for 2 years as an RN .. it really affected me mentally emotionally physically.. I got to a point I could not do it anymore .. I am a normal night owl but staying up all night long and then trying to function afterwards and live a normal life was very hard for me .. I miss and loved all my night shift crew but had to move on .. I give major props to those who can do night shift for their whole career
Yea it's not for everyone and if you're 6 months in and still feeling this way then yea it's not for you!!! I have been working nights 13 years but a bit of advice don't fall asleep as soon as you get home try to get whatever you need done as soon as you get off. Also break up your sleep hours I know it's hard I'm also a nurse. On your break if you get one try working out I just go outside and do a little jump roping it helps me hope something I've said is some help
Yes night shift is so hard. I had a hard time staying awake throughout my shift after 1am. And I have two toddler girls which made it even harder trying to get adequate sleep when I would get home. So I switched to weekend nights only had to worry about working 2 nights out the week. As soon as a weekend day shift opened I hopped on it and I love it! Sometimes I pick up 4 hour night shift bonuses because 1- you don’t have to chart if you only work 4 hrs. 2-weekday day shift too many people around so I prefer a night shift at that point lol.
Thank you for being honest I prefer seeing a messy bed and apt and real raw conversations cause I feel this too and I’m in nursing school going to fourth I hope day shift comes soon 🙏🏼
I worked night shift for almost 9 years. In the beginning it was good but by the 4th year I had migraines, GERD, palpitations, fatigue. It was hard on my body. I will say that the culture is different and we were a tighter group on nights.
Thank you, thank you for posting this! Mess and all, I feel that this is one of your best videos you've made. I am in such a rut right now too, I can relate so much. I worked 5 months in the clinic 8-5 and then transitioned to nights as a float nurse. It's been 8 months now I feel like I've been my worst this past month. Emotional liability, fatigue, sleeping so much on my days off and not having that energy to get things done. I haven't cleaned my house either in so long and I usually do that at least 1-2 times a week. I love nights but I don't know if I can do it. I'm not sure I'll be great at days, I feel like I'm totally a night shift nurse at heart but my body hates it and that sucks. It's honestly making me hate my job and nursing.
Thanks for this. I did night shift for 1 night and knew it wasn’t for me. I am a day shifter through and through. Thinking about switching from postpartum to NICU so your videos have been a very interesting.
I feel the same way. When I first started nights I had no problem transitioning between night then back to days my days off. Now it feels like I’m sleeping my life away and my life is a mess it’s not worth it 😭. Idk if it’s med surg or nights of both. But I definitely need to switch it up because this isn’t good for my mental health at all.
I totally relate to this. This is exactly how I’m feeling lately. I love night shift and adjusted quickly but being productive during the day or sleeping on my day off is a struggle. I’m watching this at 2am after taking a shower because I couldn’t sleep and I fell asleep at 12:30am. I am wide awake 🥴
I've been on night shift for a year and 5 months. Honestly it's nothing anyone can get used to, at least I know I can't. If I had an exact schedule like Monday -Wednesday maybe it would be different. But when you don't have a set schedule it's hard. I get my days mixed up all the time. I'm always tired even on my off days. I love the shift difference but it's not meant for our body to work at night.. I have started local traveling and will venture off once I quit my night shift job. But I'm working day shift and I would have to say I love it. My days go by so fast. I'm literally walking and moving my body more. But I'm still having difficulty losing weight.
Oh yes, I feel you here. I recently became a NICU nurse and in doing do so only way in was nights. I'm working on getting adjusted but it is so so hard!! However, I def feel as a newer NICU nurse, the atmosphere of nights allows me to try more and be more confident. Look forward to watching more videos! ~ From a fellow NICU nurse 😊
I work night shifts and its not for me. I like the idea of night shifts as in its not as chaotic and I don’t have to interact with as many people but that’s as far as the positives go for me. I rarely sleep longer than 4 hours so there are times I go to work on just 4 hours of sleep. It really takes a toll on your social life too. Its hard to talk to friends because I’m asleep when they are at work and vice versa and we have different days off so its almost impossible to plan hanging out. It can be pretty isolating. Flipping your schedule your days off is exhausting as well. I’ve been applying for day time positions so hopefully something works out. My dad has been working nights for 15 years and loves it. I unfortunately don’t lol. Props to anyone who has ever worked nights, it’s hard!
1st month as a new nurse and 2nd week on nights. I'm slowly adjusting but get thrown off on my off days in the middle of the day from interruptions ( Mail man banging on the door at 5p)😡😑😤. Plus I'm still unpacking/ organizing from my move to Jacksonville FL from Detroit. I've been told... as a new nurse give yourself grace, find time to do something fun and relaxing. I want to get into a workout routine to improve my fitness and decrease back & leg pain. Sending love and good vibes to new nurses and fellow night nurses!!!🌻🌻🌻🌻
Sweetheart, thanks for being so open and honest. We go through things like this but we always always bounce back. We aren’t going to be happy and jolly all the time, however, we get up and kick some ass afterwards. I love you and I love your channel. Look forward for more great videos. 😍
Night shift is terrible but we gotta push through love…I’ve learned not to drink caffeinated beverages because I have been up for 5 days straight with the exception of a couple of hours and anxiety was terrible. Depression can happen because you feel like your missing life and miss your bed. Work out more and try to move throughout your days in reverse so you won’t be irritable and you can manage… after getting off sleep because the body wants to be up … much love poo
I understand what you're going through. I'm a PCA and I used to work 12 hour night shift over the weekend. On top of being a full time student at ECPI University. I would get off at 6 AM and Ko half the day away and its extremely difficult. I'm studying Health Science, I have 7 classes until graduation and I want to work as an RN. I'm praying employers don't give me a hard time over licensure although I am willing to pay and take the NCLEX.
Yes ive worked 3rd shift off and on throughout my life. As ive gotten older, i just could not do it anymore. Day shifts are hectic, but i cant function on nights. Hopefully ill never do nights again.
I agree love nights. Less drama not all that political BS. When I get off I can run errands, work out, sleep a little then wake up and chill with my daughter when she gets home from school
Same I love it on nights..I never work more than 2, 12’s in a row and I dunno..I just always do well working at might..it’s definitely not for everyone..
I worked night shift for 1 year in the ER and it was awful. I was very moody all the time. On my off days I felt very moody while trying to have fun. I couldn't always sleep a normal amount of sleep, usually 5 hours. I hated being up during the day. On my off days I would also be up all throughout the night!! I couldn't think straight and I had class at 8am after working 12 hours overnight. I also didn't feel good physically, my body hurt and I felt ill off and on. I wouldn't recommend it for a long time. It definitely causes mental fog and sluggishness. It's worth taking to get your foot in the door somewhere, but look for other shifts once it's right for you!
When I worked night shift 8 yrs ago, I was fine. All I needed was 3 or 4 hours a sleep and I was good the next day. Now, that I’m older, a lot older than you, I went back to nights in 2019, right before Covid, and I haven’t adjusted yet. All I want to do is sleep. I’m happy my daughter is now 16 because now I let her drive herself to work.
I found myself in the same space at one point. What I did was started to group my shifts together, so worked 3 in a row, and then had 4 days off. Granted, the first day off you will probably sleep all day, but your body needs, it. What I do is I take 20 mg of MELATONIN around 9ish pm on my days off and that literally does the trick. I always wake up around 5;30 am on my days off and love it. OH, and I know this is weird but the brand makes a difference, other brands don't work for me BUT that HEB brand melatonin dummies, HENNY. they do it
Thank you for sharing how you feel chica! Can you do a video on your routine on sleeping, eating, and working out on your days on and off? I have been on nights for almost a month and also feel similar. Not depressed but just sad and tired. I do workout after work most of the time, if not, I just walk my dog longer on my days off training. I also feel like my days (nights) off are not even days off because I stay on the same schedule. For example, tonight is my night off and 3:00 am I am watching videos to stay up to get use to the schedule so I can function at work. It is not what I want, but like you said, it is temporary. I am also a pretty positive person and had my week of negativity and complaining. Now I am in the acceptance phase until I get something better. I hope you get on days soon. That is also what I am hoping for.
I love nights but I think it's taking a toll on me and my physicality (I'm so bummed out when getting motivated to work out). I wish I could do days at my current job, but the 50mile drive is just so bad during the day.
I had to realize that my schedule is going to be different from everybody else. Whenever I’m off… my goal isn’t to get up early in the morning to be productive. My day don’t start until 2p minimum. If I have back to back days off… then I may get up a little earlier the next day. But hopefully it get better for you; or you get to switch to days💕
Working the night shift is definitely challenging. Taking a picture before I started the night and 5 years later taking a new picture, showed me the damage. I feel like I have aged more with wrinkles and lack of sleep.
My bowels, liver and mental health do not like night shift. I enjoy the pace and my coworkers but girl I get so bloated, cry constantly and sleep 3-5 hours. I’ve been doing this for 2 years and still think NOC shift is trash lol
Do you eat between 12am-6amwhile at work? I notice when I refrain from eating during those hours while at work I tend to sleep better at night on my off days! If I have to eat during those hrs at work it’s something light or drinking hot tea, and water
Night shift makes me angry since I’m in the Air Force plus nursing school. I like day shift so much better. I’m day/night roaring at work I only did 8 hour shifts for nights.
Idk if this is what her hospital does, but when I worked in NICU, in my facility we had to work on nights for a year before going to day shift. night shift allowed for a slower pace and learning opportunities. I hated night shift though I’ll never work nights again
I literally left my job because I waited around for dayshift and then something else came along so I took it. Even now a year and a half later my sleep schedule is still a little wonky. Night Shift is not for me. 🥺
so this cbd will 100% not show or give issues with a drug tests? bc i am in nursing school now and i trust a nurse recommending this! thank you so much!
the THC in marijuana is what will show up positive on a standard drug test. as long as you’re certain the CBD you’re taking doesn’t contain any THC you should be fine (the product label should say no thc).
I've been on nights for 3.5 years and I can't mentally or physically do it any more. I'm supposed to be switching to days soon or else I'll be looking for another job.
Is clustering your shifts possible? That’s literally the only way I’m able to do nights as a traveler the last 4 months. So i do my 3 in a row then hop into a day schedule my days off. But i already know when I’m ready to switch specialities, I’m only going to apply for days because i cannot do this lol it’s tough

I'm starting my new grad nurse job on Monday and I'm literally so nervous bc they still haven't given us our schedules or even shift information 🥴I'm not sure if I'm ready to jump back into the night shift life, it literally takes all the energy/happiness out of us 😩 I don't know how people do it!

I can see why someone could get depression if they don’t stay on a consistent sleep schedule.
@@kt2666 Completely agree. I have a set schedule. I can see how it could mess you up if your body won't play ball.
I love nights too. It can be rough sometimes but I absolutely hate dayshift. I’ve been on nights for 5 yrs.
Hang in there you got this!! I like your videos!!
I definitely struggled working nights for 2 years. I’ll never do it again. I started having memory loss from no sleep.
Oh my....I'm here getting ready to do night shift as a new grad & I have zero experience working nights. 😢
I love nights but I think it's taking a toll on me and my physicality (I'm so bummed out when getting motivated to work out). I wish I could do days at my current job, but the 50mile drive is just so bad during the day.
That’s a really good idea to record for meditation for the mental
Praying for you to get into a routine, some sleep, or to expedite that day shift status 💜 all of the above
I LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS! Night shift is tough I’m there with you 😭
Yes, we are on it. Night shift Nicole with your enfent🎉❤
Needed some motivation today. Your cousins meditation did it for me 😂😂😂
Working the night shift is definitely challenging. Taking a picture before I started the night and 5 years later taking a new picture, showed me the damage. I feel like I have aged more with wrinkles and lack of sleep.
Awww hang in there💖💖 sending you positivity
I worked night shift for a few years and it was awful for me. I was physically and mentally declining. I feel your pain and hope you get to days soon!
My bowels, liver and mental health do not like night shift. I enjoy the pace and my coworkers but girl I get so bloated, cry constantly and sleep 3-5 hours. I’ve been doing this for 2 years and still think NOC shift is trash lol
We do 24h shift from were I come sometimes 72h 🤷🏾
All the support feel ya
I work night shift as well, when I’m at home I keep the same schedule as work. Try to go to sleep later like around 3am
Do you eat between 12am-6amwhile at work? I notice when I refrain from eating during those hours while at work I tend to sleep better at night on my off days! If I have to eat during those hrs at work it’s something light or drinking hot tea, and water
I need that meditation!!
Thinking of you, sending Love and Hugs your way ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏽
Night shift makes me angry since I’m in the Air Force plus nursing school. I like day shift so much better. I’m day/night roaring at work I only did 8 hour shifts for nights.
The medication/affirmation I love it😂😂
Girl, it’s time to switch! You need to be on day shift ASAP. Stop it. They need you more than you need them. Trust me.
Idk if this is what her hospital does, but when I worked in NICU, in my facility we had to work on nights for a year before going to day shift. night shift allowed for a slower pace and learning opportunities. I hated night shift though I’ll never work nights again
If I’m not going to work or school I automatically fall into being nocturnal lol. I feel like I’d be a natural at the night shift.
I would like to try working night shifts. I work mornings and I hate it. I’ve never been a morning person 😭.
When did Biscuit get big??? 🤣😍
I literally left my job because I waited around for dayshift and then something else came along so I took it. Even now a year and a half later my sleep schedule is still a little wonky. Night Shift is not for me. 🥺
Where did you get your dream on sign??
Great vlog as always 👍🏾👏🏾🤗
I love your cousin’s affirmations haha 😂😊
so this cbd will 100% not show or give issues with a drug tests? bc i am in nursing school now and i trust a nurse recommending this! thank you so much!
the THC in marijuana is what will show up positive on a standard drug test. as long as you’re certain the CBD you’re taking doesn’t contain any THC you should be fine (the product label should say no thc).
CBD doesn’t show up as thc for you on drug tests? I know there are brands that claim no thc but you never know
I struggle during the night shift as a patient because of an uncompassionate and cold nurse
I've been on nights for 3.5 years and I can't mentally or physically do it any more. I'm supposed to be switching to days soon or else I'll be looking for another job.
Nights are soooo hard on the body. I can’t
You're not allowed to smoke week or use THC as a nurse??
SAME!!
Find Security!!!
Update on how your liking the NICU?
I start night shift NICU in 2 weeks 😅
Is clustering your shifts possible? That’s literally the only way I’m able to do nights as a traveler the last 4 months. So i do my 3 in a row then hop into a day schedule my days off. But i already know when I’m ready to switch specialities, I’m only going to apply for days because i cannot do this lol it’s tough
I need the link to the meditation 😂
Jean junior jacques/ Phillipe are yours
Hey I’m not seeing the link to the Hawaii trip.
I definitely would love to find a boyfriend that works in the same field as me. Although I know this is kinda rare.
After 3 straight shifts on nights I’m going in a coma
Alvin looking like a MEAL. Sorry girl lol 🤪💞
😁😁
What is CBD?
Replacement for weed.
@@kt2666 it’s found in weed it’s not a weed replacement. cbd is cannabidiol. it doesn’t get you high but has a lot of beneficial factors. you can buy it in lotions, oils etc
@@makaylalashe4730 I know it has many other properties. But all my friends use CBD oil to help with their weed withdrawals.
@@kt2666 weed doesn’t give you withdrawals😭😭
@@makaylalashe4730 My friends likes to think it does. Without it they are anxious.
All I want to do is to talk to her and see if she would help me with getting people that is using her profile pic from scamming people but she wouldn't do anything for me beside block me from everything so I couldn't talk to her about it i don't want anything from her beside her help but she played the rich card and snob me off i just wanted to help get her to lock down her picture so people quit stealing them but I guess that what you get when you are dealing with rich people
Where are you glasses from? Brand and name?
I am leaving night shift in September for good. Your quality of life declines and you become depressed. It’s not worth it.

You need to know your worth. You need to switch to day time.
I know a nurse who literally lost her bodily function after working 7 years of nightshift. 6 months of nightshift is more than enough. You already did you time. Switch! Your body and soul is begging you to switch to daytime. It’s time!
I think the big announcement was that she is pregnant 😔
Huh...🤔
no
I'm starting my new grad nurse job on Monday and I'm literally so nervous bc they still haven't given us our schedules or even shift information 🥴I'm not sure if I'm ready to jump back into the night shift life, it literally takes all the energy/happiness out of us 😩 I don't know how people do it!
