  • It is 25 years since The Great Intelligence last attempted an invasion of Earth, today its evil web is again reaching out towards us?
Using The New World University as its cover and the zombie-like Chilly students as its pawns, the Intelligence now seeks to control the mind of every human being.
Tangled in the new struggle are its old enemies Victoria Waterfield and Professor Travers - but whose side are they on?
Fighting alone this time, without their famous scientific advisor, The Brigadier and Sarah Jane Smith of UNIT are hard-pressed to decide who is friend or foe as they search for the missing Locus which still binds the Intelligence's power.
Battle is joined as the Brigadier's own family is threatened and UNIT faces a monstrous new breed of Yeti!
    _________________________________________________________________________________________
Downtime is a spin-off of the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. It was produced by the independent production company Reeltime Pictures. It is a sequel to the Second Doctor serials The Abominable Snowmen (1967) and The Web of Fear (1968).
Originally released in 1995, it stars Nicholas Courtney (Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart), Deborah Watling (Victoria Waterfield), Jack Watling (Professor Edward Travers), and Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith). It also introduces the character of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart played by Beverley Cressman.
It's a must-see for any Time Lord fans

Did anyone catch the sneaky reference to this in The Giggle? Kate mentions having fought "Yetis" which she never has in the main show but she did in this! I thought that was really neat

Since Kate was introduced in this story and later became cannon, I propose that we consider her son Gordon (probably age 30 by 2023) cannon as well. While we're at it, let's consider Sarah Jane's love of pizza fact, too. I wonder what her favorite topping was?

    • @DemetriusSorvo
      @DemetriusSorvo ปีที่แล้ว +3

Canon doesn't exist in Doctor Who. She become official. Not canon.

    • @Jamestopboy

Sarah Jane’s official flavour pizza topping is “whatever she can throw at an alien to do the most damage/slow them down as much as possible”.

I believe she mentioned that she had two sons during the 12th Doctor era so it seems possible that Gordon is cannon and has a little brother.

I read the novel, Virgin Books, in 1996. Obtained through the fan network a PAL/ntsc dupe, as the video was not originally available to view in the US -then, it was. Legal issues -took until recent years for a DVD to be available.
This professional 'spin off' has the most original cast/crew talent, and the most relevance to the actual universe of Who. (Wartime, Shakedown, The Stanger, Liz Shaw -interesting dramas, yet not reference or canon with the modern series). Of course, when this video was made in 1996,...we didn't have the audio' of the two Yeti/Intellegence stories remastered on CD. We had the Target novels. The Second episode, and only surviving of "Abominable Snowmen" was on vhs on The Troughton Years. The first surviving episode of Web of Fear, was not out on vhs until 2004. So, "Downtime" was viewed on trust, and novels -now, we have both Yeti/Intelegence stories recovered/animated/bly-ray -all of existing Classic Who is available in some media. It's 2023, and "Downtime" does fit with Who chronology.

This is one of the best Doctor Who direct-to-DVD films ever made. I love how it features Victoria, Sarah Jane and the Brigadier together.
It would be better if they were allowed to use The Doctor.

It’s kind of shocking how, when Kate was eventually brought into the main show, they picked an actress who looked so much like the one who originated the role here. Although now that I’ve seen both, I think I actually prefer Cressman over Redgrave personally.

It was great finally getting to see this film, I have been a big fan of Doctor Who and its spin-offs for many years now, owning many classic spin-offs produced by both Reeltime Pictures and BBV Productions but despite this, I just never got around to seeing Downtime, which is surprising since its easily the most well known from the Wilderness Years featuring both Nicholas Courtney and Elisabeth Sladen, but finally after long last I did get around to it just in time for its 27th Anniversary. While the plot was very confusing I really enjoyed seeing the brigadier and Sarah again, and the soundtrack was superb, I even managed to get it on CD. Thank you for sharing this great film!

Wow. I just watched the scenes that Sylvester McCoy filmed for Ian Levine for his extended version of Downtime, and good lord are they bad. They make this mid-90s low budget straight to video effort look like a Hollywood masterpiece. McCoy is clearly and obviously reading cue cards, the camera work is abominable, and all the new scenes do is add play by play and color commentary to the movie that you are already watching. They double the length of the movie and don't add a single thing of substance. Stick with the original here, folks.

It was a cold wet night in November
      Twenty-two years ago,
There was a police box in a junkyard
We didn't know where it would go,
An old man took two teachers
      Into time and space,
      It started off a legend
      That no other could replace.
      Doctor in distress,
      Let's all answer his S.O.S.,
      Doctor in distress,
Bring him back now, we won't take less.
      There were evil metal creatures,
      Who tried to exterminate,
      Inside each of their casings
Was a bubbling lump of hate,
      We met cybernetic humans
      With no feelings at all,
      Warriors of the ice
Who stood over seven feet tall.
      Doctor in distress,
      Let's all answer his S.O.S.,
      Doctor in distress,
Bring him back now, we won't take less.
Bring him back now, we won't take less,
If we stop his travels he'll be in a mess,
The galaxy will fall to evil once more,
With nightmarish monsters fighting a war.
      Doctor in distress,
Bring him back now, we won't take less.
We've learned to accept six doctors
      With companions at their side,
When they were faced with dangers
They didn't run, they didn't hide,
There was a Brigadier and a Master
      And a canine computer,
      Each screaming girl just hoped
That a Yeti wouldn't shoot her.
      Doctor in distress,
      Let's all answer his S.O.S.,
      Doctor in distress,

The plot. What is the plot? Ah yes. The plot.
In answer to your question the plot is about some entity called the Great Intelligence. The second Doctor ran into it with Abominable Snowman in the Himalayas and then again in London with The Web Of Fear and defeated it for the second time. This,if you discount the one with The one with Matt Smith playing the Doctor with the killer Snowmen, is supposed to be the third encounter with the Great Intelligence. This time without the Doctor being around to save the day. As usual it's about some alien trying to take over the world. Why any aliens would want to take over this world after the mess we've made of it is beyond me but there you go. Alien overlord defeated and the human race can carry on with its charge towards inevitable oblivion.

I understand it wasn't made by the BBC themselves, but I am surprised they allowed their characters and intellectual property to have been used in this way. And the company which produced it...... I am assuming from the end result it was 3 teenagers borrowing their Dad's camcorder, then having finished making it, accidentally dropped the VHS into a bucket of water just long enough to permanently damage the picture and sound quality ?
