I've had LITERALLY all of these issues along with additional frequent sound issues...so if anyone's watching this wondering if Amanda's story is just an isolated case of a single bad camera, I can tell you it definitely isn't. Both my Hero 7 and Hero 9s (I've had multiples) have all had these issues. SO FRUSTRATING when it looks like your camera is working, you're checking it constantly, and you get home and discover you lost a ton of footage.

After seeing similar reports about GoPros I went with the Osmo last summer too. Also convinced my daughter to go with one for her first action cam. We’re both happy with our Osmos❤️

Hero 4 for life. They hit a home run with the hero 4 and GoPro has never done better. I’ve never used anything else (except a 3 before hand) and I never get complaints about my footage quality. My dslr is the same busted old sl2 I’ve had for almost 7 years. It’s been dropped countless times, left in the rain, covered with oil, sparks, metal dust and I lost the lens cap the second day I had it.
I’m definitely a Luddite when it comes to camera equipment, but I’ll say the Osmo looks way more attractive than a new GoPro for reliability sake alone.

The only camera that might replace my trusty old Hero4 someday is the Osmo after this review.

Years ago 2015 maybe my husband bought a GoPro 3. He had lots of problems with it. Stabilization was bad, battery was short lived. He tried a number of things but just got frustrated with the whole process. He hasn’t used it in years. Watching your videos are a real pleasure. Thank you Amanda. Have a very Merry Christmas., and stay safe. Looking forward to getting your Calendar.

Thanks for confirming it’s not just me!
I thought it was user error and have been so frustrated…..
Mine would keep recording audio but the picture would freeze.
So many trips and hardly any footage to make stories of for 2021.

Really interesting video Amanda - sounds like you had a nightmare with the 7. Harry and I have been long time GoPro users, and every version they bring out feels like it becomes another kick to motorcycle riders. The giant adapter you need to connect your mic. Now with the 10 you need to disassemble your entire set up to change a battery. I think we are like the iPhone users who refuse to switch to Android.
We also use the insta360 for different shots on our rides, but I find it so power hungry and fussy to edit that the footage mostly gets left on the cutting floor. Maybe I am making it hard for myself as everyone else seems to get great 360 shots into their edits.

I love my osmo action. It never lets me down and has become my most used camera. I used it on an 8 day ride from Da Nang to Hanoi on the old Ho Chi Min Trail.(now a sort of road) Through rain, hot to cold and it worked for hours on end without a glich. One of the best values around. Not so sure about the new version yet though.

Ugh brutal, can't believe you had to put up with so many GoPro issues! I've used the Tascam setup for a little over a year and I think it's phenomenal. I record to two tracks by default too so I never overload it

Have to agree Amanda. I simply can’t trust the GoPro 7s I have. I’ve now got one mounted on my helmet chinbar so I can see the red light flashing - a distraction I really don’t need. It’s now the secondary camera as an Insta360 One R on a monopod out front of the bike does all the hard work and allows me to never miss a shot or angle. Really appreciate your update and hope GoPro take your concerns seriously. Take Care. Bart

For my vids I used my Samsung phone in the beginning and spend time to investigate what setup would work and tick all the boxes. Dji Osmo Action with Movo mic ... works like a charm. To bad the follow up of the Action doesn't tick it all. So I might get a second one too. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

I bought a GoPro 7 for my trip coast to coast 2020 based on brand recommendations. To date still never got a video for same reasons you've sighted. The only things I have from the trip where stop and use my phone. I added a phone mount to the handlebars in Sturgis on the way back to the East Coast. You've suggested the Osmo before and I will probably be going with that in the future. 👍😎 PS: Enjoy your Christmas at home.

Thanks for this! Very informative. End screen. I now use my Insta3601 X2 exclusively for my vlog. I team it up with the synco wireless mic. (G1A1) The mic adapter for the Insta is great. (Downside, It does render my camera NOT waterproof). The wireless mic set up is super easy. I Velcro the transmitter to inside my chin guard with the mic portion jammed into the chin pad which cuts out the wind noise at highway speeds. I clip the receiver to the ram mount run the audio cable to the mic adapter. The 360 stitches that out. On the rainy days I use SJ7 cams in waterproof housings and plug a mic into the camera that’s mounted on the chin guard. ( currently doing a video on my set up and will be posted in a. Couple of weeks). Have a great visit with your family.

Great video as always, informative and fun.
End Screen Crew. This next season I will be trying out grabbing some video of my rides, most especially my Ride to RMR. Not because I want to become any kind of a motovlogger but because for this next trip to the Zito ranch I will be riding with others to the event. I am not going to say who that is because I don't know what is in the wings as far as their plans for announcements etc. on their channel. But it is a group you know and I have been so impressed with. I can't describe to you how excited I am to be invited to ride along with them. This footage will be captured with an Osmo Action not only because you recommended it, but because MANY have switched and shown the problems with their Gopro Hero (XX) which model, it seems, does not matter after the 6 came out. ALL Gopro cameras seem to have similar issues plus more. See you at RMR 7 and of course Merry Christmas or whatever holiday you and yours celebrate. Even if you don't celebrate anything at all. My sentiment is always the same

I went from the GoPro and Sena Evo 2 to an Akaso Brave 7 and Iphone 11 Pro Max. The Akaso does 4k, has image stabilization and a cinch to download. I had a rocky start with Akaso, but it was sorted out with the distributer replacing it with one that had the latest firmware upgrades. I went through 2 Sena Evo combo camera intercoms and finally gave up on them. They periodically got “Hot” as if the batteries were shorting out. Since I didn’t want my face burned off I settled for a Sena 50c in an even exchange through the Sena warranty. I am not on youtube except to support adventurers like you Amanda, also FTA Tim and Noraly aka Itchy Boots. I do some camera work and my Akaso does it flawlessly. You might want to check them out yourself.

I have never owned a GoPro so my only experience with them has been watching other peoples frustration being voiced on TH-cam about them. I have however used a Sony Action cam for the last13 years, first a HDR AS15 then my present one FDR X3000. I use the camera every time I ride and have never lost a file to corruption by either camera. The only footage I've lost was a complete 128GByte set from a couple of rides due to some bonehead leaving the SD card on his tank bag following a swap, and then riding off. Never really got the fascination with GoPro. IMHO the form factor of the Sony is way better. Tucks into the side of the helmet really well. Also never had a camera failure due to rain. Glad you got that sorted Amanda, means more great footage for us to watch.

Yeah I'm done with GoPro too, currently using a couple of Hero 5 blacks, a black 7 and a black 8. For me, my Hero 7 has been the best of the lot, the 8 is my problem child. (The Hero 5's are reliable, just not very capable.) It's apparent that GoPro's QC is sub-par; some units OK others not. GoPro's warrantee service has been OK too but it doesn't make up for lost video/images. I'm glad for your positive review on the DJI, maybe that'll be my next.

I use Two GoPro 8's and a GoPro 10 - Lucky for me I have not had the issues you have...maybe it was a bad device but that stinks losing all that footage....I do use a DJI A2 mini for drone footage...may not be the best but I think it does a great job for what it is...for some of the "B" footage stuff - I have to say my iPhone 13max in cinematic mode for video...is pretty spectacular even against my Canon EOS 90D not to mention less to travel and pack with....Merry Christmas and happy Holidays....thanks for the insights...would like to know more about the 360 camera...interested in getting one of those!!! - Safe Travels!!!!

I get it, it has to perform all the time! I have been fortunate with my go pro 7 but I use a osmo action for a second view camera and any short garage videos. I replaced it in Butte, but I could not get the brand new Hero 8 to work properly. Sadly I don't have footage for most of our ride from Butte, Mt. to Colorado and then home. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to have video that is currupted and unable to use. Especially since that video is your livelyhood! End screen question: I don't currently video my rides but I'm thinking about starting to. I wanted to get a chin mount but after taking pictures while holding the phone where the camera would sit, the windscreens on both bikes bisect the shot. So now I'm researching on the top of the helmet or to the side. I was looking at the Go Pros and thinking of picking up a used one just to try it out but now I'm thinking the Osmo. On a side note: Love the cats wondering around the tent, the look on their faces!😂 Have a Merry Christmas!

you've convinced me; my next action camera will be a DJI OSMO. many moons ago, my wife bought me a gopro hero3+. that's what i've used for years. even a new battery only lasts a little over 2 hours, which is pretty useless for any kind of dirt or street ride. i need to hook up power to the camera so i can charge it in flight, but since i mount the camera on my helmet, that presents a wiring challenge. good times.

I just use cheap action cams in the 50 dollar range with whatever cards I can find. They usually work ok and don't really let me down. Amanda, Amanda, Amanda! It's so unfortunate the experiences you've had with GoPro - your channel is one that inspired me to launch one to record my travels for my grandson. LOL - I actually got my GoPro Hero 10 as I saw how great your videos were. That said, actually dropped my during a recent trip to the Davis Mountains in West Texas (don't ask) and after a thorough search - I found it and...although the lens I added and battery box had come off - it still worked - and still works like a charm. Oh well...Glad the DJI Osmo is working out for you. Keep on keeping. Thanks for the inspiration.

I use a drift ghost x , For the most part it has been great. The audio is super simple and easy. Ive never understood why gopro or even osmo use adapters when a simple 3mm jack mic works great with in-camera volume control. THe whole mic adapter thing to me is just a way for you to have to spend more money.

I had an older version of the Drift Ghost that came off my helmet and was lost...my fault. I replaced it with a Ghost X but the slot that the card slides into broke and that was the end of that one. Had good results overall and may go back to one since the sound and video were quite good. My earliest videos are all Drift products.

Yeah, I was looking forward to Magpie's video to see if it would be more people telling me I made a mistake buying another GoPro! Just bought the 10 and straight away have started seeing lots of reviews of why it is less than ideal for motorcycle riders. I think in this case, we don't have the same trouble as Amanda with reliability (and we get redundancy by both recording at the same time) - although I do find the waterproofing is a real problem on the 7.

I have the GoPro Hero 9 Black and have the same issues with audio cutting out, the camera randomly powering off, the media mod not working. GoPro is nothing but a one hit wonder that has an amazing marketing team. The best action camera I've used is the Garmin VIRB Ultra 30. It's a real shame the Garmin didn't continue the development of that camera.

Very informative video. I have a hunch that GoPro is living off their past success. They spend millions on advertising so they have to charge more for their stuff. They probably have cut corners on their quality to help pay for the massive advertising budget. I use a Drift Ghost XL on my helmet. I have a channel with a few videos but mainly I use it as a dash cam. After getting screwed over by a Harley rider crashing into me head on I use a dash cam all the time.. keep the content coming. Love how you give little shout outs to other channels once in a while. Just watched Beards live stream last night.

I still rock an ancient GoPro Hero4 Black. They just went downhill from there for our purposes.
But what I want to know is what’s your helmet mount? We have the same helmet and I’ve always stuck with a side mount because of the vent and release on the chin bar. You seem to be working around those! How?

I never thought the GoPros were worth their costs. Went with Veho Muvi K2s for a few years and now mostly shooting with an Akaso Brave 7LE, Akaso V50 Elite and an XTU S3. I've never had a camera fail while shooting. I have lost a week's footage with a hard drive failure. Lost some nice video. Backup to a 2nd drive every 2nd day.

The Hero 7 itself isn't waterproof. They attempted to do much to keep water from easily getting inside of the camera, but it can stand a little bit of moisture. Aside from that, the 7 has been plagued with firmware issues. The updates don't really seem to do anything. It's nearly impossible to use it with the app. When it works, it's flaky and never stays connected for long. After all of that, I rarely had issues recording. I made a trip to West Virginia and recorded video on it exclusively and there was one time that it would record 1 or 2 seconds then turn off. I am still not entirely sure what made it do that or what happened to make it stop doing that, but it eventually fixed itself. All of the video I recorded with it was perfect and pretty clear. The on-board audio kind of stinks because it has a wind cut feature that automatically turns on when it shouldn't (and it really doesn't do well at that). I think the biggest problem with the 7 is the heat. It generates a ton of heat and for electronics, that's not a good thing. Used about the best SD card I could find and worked well. I couldn't record for long else it would discharge the battery quickly. Mine is broken. I threw it away. It was far from ever working again. What killed it? Water. Water kills both the battery and the camera.

I used a GoPro 5 for quite a while, and was ready to find something with more stabilization. Luckily, ended up with the osmo instead of getting another gopro. I was able to sell my GoPro 5 to someone that didn't need stabilization as much.
Thanks for talking about the mic volume level. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with that. I also use an at950 and a short boom mic. The audio is almost unusable because it picks up my breathing too well.

I really feel like the 5 was the last reliable go pro haha 🤣 *controversial*
I would try that Koss volume controller, and also tape off the inside chin bar vents and you're using the chin curtain right? I mean I can't use highway speed audio but stuff under 45 is normally is ok

    • @JCrozier1
      @JCrozier1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@AstheMagpieFlies I snapped out the vent and put a sticky pad in that spot. It works really well there, but does have two wide open holes right behind the camera. I have the boom attached to the flip up part using a little piece of Velcro that allows the mic to move as the camera gets angled differently.

I used a CamPark V30 for most of my forward-looking videos but, unfortunately, it went missing during our move to GA, as did my VanTop Moment 3 which was handlebar mounted. The moving company sent me a Victure AC700 which is a so-so handlebar camera. I also purchased a CamPark ACT74A which is a so-so helmet camera. I ordered a new CamPark V30 which was replaced by a V30A which does not have noise supression so it kind of sucks. I am currently seaching for a primary camera. I would like to use an external mic to stuff down the front of my outer clothes with a dead cat....the same thing I used with my original V30 and got good engine sounds and minimal wind noise. Sorry for the long story but I'm still searching for the right camera that will do what the old V30 did well. Thanks for listening....hope you did. ryde safe!

I didn't like it when GoPro got rid of the waterproof case. For one, the old case has a curv3d lense cover, so water would no stay on. With the new GoPro, the lense is flat, water just stays there, blocking the view. I won't buy another. I've also had the same issue with my 7 corrupting files. Not to mention how sensitive they are to damage.

I've always had really good luck with my GoPros. I know plenty of folks that have had freeze issues, but knock on wood, I've not. For me the biggest issue with the GoPro line since the Hero 3+ Black, has been no way to plug a mic into it for vlogging. You have to buy a dongle or some contraption that makes the camera bigger than it needs to be. On top of that, the audio has defects, snaps, pops, and sound drops here and there when using those dongles, cages and attachments.
To get around that, and leave the GoPro truly weatherproof, I've take to just using a zoom type recorder and running my mic from that. It takes a few more minutes in post production, but then at least I know I've got decent audio.
For me, the video and form factor for Gopro has been great though. Strange how it is so hit and miss for different people.
I looked into the DJI products and was a little unnerved by the privacy statements in the TOS. Has any of that given you any concern?
