Here's a fun fact for you. Simone was actualy pregnant with her first child during this show. Which makes it even more amazing in my opinion
The growl pitch change is just how he does it. Does that on almost everything he sings on

I’m officially addicted! I’ve listened to this 5 times. Rich, regarding the growls, I’m someone who dislikes groups that use a lot of growling or whatever it’s called. Having said that, the way Epica balances it with the beautiful sound of Simone’s vocals works. It fits and I like it.
I see it. I feel it too. This one was amazing but I still wonder how it would sound without those 2 closed throat parts. Still a wicked tune no doubt!!!!! Loving Epica

One of my favorite bands :D So glad to see Epica here. The whole band is pretty amazing, but the dynamic between Mark growls and Simone's angelical vocals are really really cool and very well done. I really recommend the songs Kingdom of Heaven - live video (it's their ultimate song) and The Essence of Silence - Official live (my personal favorite)
Fan fact, in this show Simone was pregnant (3 months I think), and it's really impressive that she was able to sing this way for 3 hours

So many great songs in their catalogue, but you are right, their ballads are amazing.
That whole live show is totally brilliant. Their 10 th Anniversary show. A whole week of prepraration and rehearsal with band orchestra and choir prior to show. 3 hours of sheer epicaness.
Simon is 1 of a handful of singer who have made me emotional diring live shows - voice of an angel. I am a hardened metalhaead of 4 decades. Great reaction guys.

Cool reaction video. If you guys want to hear a song without the growling then take a look at the song "Once upon a nightmare". The song itself is based upon an old horrific Nordic fairytale transformed to a Poem by Wolfgang von Goethe (basically the German Shakespeare) called The Erlking (Erlkönig) . The musical buildup is like the soundtrack of a movie with of sense forboding of the tragedy about to happen. The story is about a father racing through the night to get help for his sick son. That, in his fever-state, is having visions of a gobling king trying to seduce him to enter the land of the dead. No growling in this song and Simone just sounds devine. The tragic conclusion makes this a piece of art. Beneath you will find the original version and literal English translation of the poem mentioned. About the different types of growling, it just adds to the 'demonesque' feel of his growls, it adds a dimension of not only darkness, but also being 'unhinged' at that. Nothing like a dark character with a multiple personality disorder (actually pretty similar to Smeagol).

#painintheask savatage streets a rock opera. The album tells the story of DT Jesus. The story telling is on point. The guitar work is nothing short of pure genius. The vocals are pure emotion. Savatage was so underrated. Jon Oliva is one of the greatest song writers of all time. I can't suggest this album enough.

One of their masterpieces, for sure. And to answer your question: no, I don't think taking away the growls would do any better to the song, but quite the opposite. Epica is a band full of layers that complement each other. If you take off one of them, the product wouldn't be as good.

Dude, I was about to curse you out for cutting it short. Good thing you didn't. The Beauty and the Beast vocal dynamics between Simone and Mark are what set them apart from all the other Symph bands. As for the screech that Mark does, it is on the album. I don't know if its a third character. I always understood it to be battle of polar opposites between Simone's angelic voice and Mark's demonic growls. Who knows, maybe someone step on Mark's tail and he yelped like a possessed dog, LOL. To be honest, I don't pay attention to lyrics too much. I'm more in it for the musical ride and just treat the vocalists as other instruments. #Epica The Divine Conspiracy. Kel and Rich, have you guys ever done any hardcore punk. I would love to hear you guys do some old Biohazard, Madball or Sick of it All. If you wanted to do an all female band, do something off of Bricks Are Heavy, by L7, preferably the song "Shitlist". Hell, girls can rock too! :)
they had you in that last pause...love your reaction when the base abruptly resumed. Kel's expression was priceless. it is an oldie but a goodie technique very common in metal genre. yah.. that last gutteral distortion is my least favorite as well. it is an element of death metal that can easily be tweaked..for a change in pace please consider reacting to 2 very moving of Simone's ballads: canvas of life or tides of time.

A realy greate song that I feel have been neglected in TH-cam world. I believe I've heard that's there is a story off loss of someone in that song, maby someone can fill in with that story. Might be nice with lyriks, she goes a bit "operetic". Lovely heavy guitars, no growl.
