"Sounds like a philosopher" - he has a Masters in psychology if I'm not mistaken. So now you've found out why I'm always sad when people's first encounter with Epica is Sancta Terra. It's a beautiful song don't get me wrong, but it's not what Epica is about, and much too often Epica gets disregarded as "that band that has that one song with Floor Jansen in it". They're so much more than that. Try Essence of Silence (official live).
They are, but you have to admit that F&S create vocal magic together. I'm surprised that they haven't made an album together yet (outside of Ayreon, obviously).
@fnglert Yes! I definitely agree about Sancta Terra! Actually that's why I suggested he react to something like this. Sancta Terra is a good "gateway" song, but doesn't let Epica show their true colors.
Kinda makes me glad I went from Kamelot to Epica instead of Nightwish to Epica. While "The Haunting" was my intro to Simone, I went into Epica's music standalone.

the superb Simone (inspired in her youth by Tarja ) really delivers with her angelic classical beauty...this band, to me, more than just about any other has always embodied the core meaning of symphonic metal perfectly embodying all the its essentials
Man this song is always amazing! and I always get goosebumps when the section "THE TIME HAS COMEEEE" starts too, amazing! One thing EPICA does very well is transitions, from minor ones to complicated ones, their songs really take you on a journey!

Simone is a wonderful singer. She was pregnant at this concert so they probably tried to go easy on her. You really need to listen to "Consign to Oblivion", "Cry for the Moon" and some of their Songs from their Album "The Classical Conspiracy". ESPECIALLY "The Imperial March" :D You won't hear Simone singing in most of the songs, but you'll love the combination of Epica and another Orchestra ;)
This song just speaks to me on such a spiritual level. Take responsibility for your life and your actions, and design your universe. And that chorus. HO. LEE. SHIIIIIT. I mean not only does it sound SO good, but WHOA. We can't undo what we have done so show us now what we've become. Confront us with our viciousness and our weakness. We can't evade our destiny so show responsibility. For we all surely have a sense of our consciousness. 10/10 masterpiece.

Epica are the absolute best at blending real metal and real orchestra. For a different way of doing this though I recommend trying Arkona and tracks from their 'decade of glory' show. It's 3 hours of Russian folk/black metal genius and Masha is a different kind of star front woman.
I think when you hit 10k you should stream a reaction to this entire show. It really is a treat to watch the whole thing. Or one of Nightwish's shows. Waken 2013, Tempere 2015, Wembley 2015, and Buenos Aires 2018 are all good.

Yeah Kingdom of Heaven is fantastic. Mind you I'm not a long time fan only found them out through Nightwish. But some of Epica's stuff is top notch.
