  • A ballista is an ancient war machine. Originally the word ballista was used for what we know as a Roman stone-projecting catapult. My ballista would be in Ancient Greece called "oxybeles".
    It has been built according to an old Greek formula from the third century BC. The maximum range is 122m (400ft). It shoots arrows that weight around 100g (1/4 lb) that are capable to pierce 3cm (1,2") thick wood. I have built it with my friend in 2 weeks during my summer holiday in 2009.
    Please send comments. If you are at least a little bit interested in catapults, trebuchets and similar war machines, do not hesitate to contact me.

    It was very difficult in terms of rope. We used a PP 1cm (5/12 inches) thick rope. However, we are going to build another ballista, which is going to be more according to an old manuscript (Belopoica - hope you know), and we will probably use a PAD 1/6 Diametros thick braided rope. It should be better. I am looking forward your ballista!

    This is the best ballista I have seen so far on You tube, excellent job! And I applaud your choice in targets!

    Nice job!!
    You boys gave more attention to the arrows than most builders. Did you hammer the bodkins yourself? Advice: find a welder. Your trigger fulcrum is coming loose. Switch to twisted nylon rope for the bowstring; you are losing power to the elasticity of the braided rope. Use braided rope for the skeins, the elasticity will be more consistent.
    You did your research, well done indeed.

    what a shame I haven't saw this machin live..

    If you used the same type of epizygis, the friction would keep it in a place. Usually it is solved by small pegs inserted through the modiolus.

    You remind me of myself and my cousins, although I admit even we never built a full scale ballista. The scholarship required to research this device, the engineering acuity to replicate it, and the and the dedicated labor to construct it, nevermind your excellent choice in targets, make me hopeful for the future. That you no doubt considered all of this as simply "fun" only increases that. The lazier couch potato types have potential to advance our society, but your kind will lead them.

    that is from 22 yards, and a 300 grain single bevel broadhead, I dont know if you used the full range of the ballista for this though, that would be a nother can of worms and my crossbow well I have not attempted that range and problably wont.

    Yes we did.

    I must admit that the shot was not so powerful as other ones but you should consider that the target was a bit uphill. Let me correct you once more, the wood plank was 3/5 inch thinck.
    Thx very much!!!

    Get The Greek and Roman Artillery: Technical Treatises or The Greek and Roman Artillery: Historical Development by E. W. Marsden. It contains a sheet of dimensions of certain parts of a arrow-shooting catapult. For example - the frame of a Greek catapult is 6.5 D wide and 5.5 D tall..D=diameter of the torsion bundle). It will be also helpful if you watch my other video - Greek Ballista because it is as much a replica of an ancient Greek Catapult as possible.

    This is a scorpio at all!

  • @manga12
    @manga12 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    yes that is a true ballista, built as a torsion engine, but its really scaled down from a real one, the real scorpion had much more power and bigger arms with which to launch with but good job not just making it out of an old bow and caling it a balista since that would just be a giant crossbow and not a true ballista. which is what you actualy have, and good job keeping the bolts thick wood with long bodkin points, this is about what a real one would use, but my cross bow will do the same thing

      I got it from Cambridge University Library - one of the libraries in the UK that receives copies of every book published in English or something like that. I think you call them 'legal deposit libraries'.

    Hey! I'm trying to do a miniature oxybelle for my history class, and I had a couple questions;
    1. How do you trigger the arrow to go off?
    2. What are you using and how do you to get the rope so tight?
    3. When you fire, does that wheel you pulled come loose?
    Well, I think I'll start with that and then ask if I have any more questions.
    Muchly Appreciated!

    I think Ballistas are the coolest of the siege engines. Also the most complex. Yours is very nice.
