- A look at Warwick Castles Trebuchet, this 18 meter tall mediaeval siege engine has been at the castle now for 4 years and is fired on a daily basis throughout the season, see the machine the loading sequence and of course the trebuchet being fired 3 times the last shot being a fire shot

only had the one camcorder with me and couldn't see where it landed from where we were sadly but it did make a great noise on the fire shot
So England manage to break the world record for largest trebuchet which was previously held by England for 700 years.
As far as I know the record is still held by the Warwolf, rumored to have been 90m tall. That’s a figure I think is highly exaggerated, but nevertheless it probably was larger than 18m.
Why not show the projectile in flight, or the impact??

It is designed to be capable of hurling projectiles distances of up to 300 metres (980 ft) and as high as 25 metres (82 ft) and can throw projectiles weighing up to 150 kilograms (330 lb).[62]
On 21 August 2006, the trebuchet claimed the record as the most powerful siege engine of its type when it sent a projectile weighing 13 kilograms (29 lb) a distance of 249 metres (817 ft) at a speed of 260 kilometres per hour (160 mph)

2:15 imagine that the trebuchet *does* misfire, and that sling catches you around the leg. For some reason I think that has probably happened before in history, and I can't imagine them living, figuring their leg would either get ripped off or just rip them in half, or at best you'd be launched several hundred feet or more.
Very cool… But I wish there was a shot of the projectile flying through the air and landing - also, the force of impact, and the distance traveled- that would be good information
I have been asked that a lot over the years this video has been on TH-cam and it was not possible with the kit I had at the time trees being in the way and the landing area being obscured
Guess the last use of the trebuchet was when the other side got
cannons and blew the contraption into matchsticks with one shot.
Then the trebuchet guys, (if any were still alive), hollered:
"SACRE BLEU!" WHAT THE FUQUE WAS THAT?!"

I think that it was more a case of not needing trebuchets any more once cannons were available to breach castle walls.
They often used to hide them behind thickets of trees and shrubs so noone saw where they were,where they were aiming and when they were launching.

Because the two squirrel cage wheels which happen to be big wheels by themselves, are enough to hoist anything up to 2 tons with two workers in each wheels.
Gears are probably added for safety measures but aren't necessary in theory.
How do I get it to were my life is that I wake up, fire a trebuchet and then have an ale with my mates everyday

Saw this yesterday in Warwick Castle ... a tacky.. cheesy Americanified version of Medieval times ... but fun!!!!

2:00 - I should just correct you, but there weren't actually any tractors at all in medieval times. Sorry to be pedantic but I'm a bit of a history buff.
I wanna try the giant hamster wheels! they should make jyms like that! each machine should operate something and you can have fun launching rocks, giant water or ice balloons or watermelons at a distant target. it would be so much fun and quite a workout!

One ingenius item's they would launch were dead enemy's cut up left to rot especially heads so those inside would be creeped out and they would secumb to desease themselves.

all depends on what you want to fire rocks are good for knocking down castle walls decaying animals are good to spread disease in a besiged town/castle pots containing oil complete with a wick can start fires fire balls can do the same, even Jeremy clarkson used one once to throw a car range is a bit limited only a few hundred meters
If it can launch an object weighing up to 330 lb, they really ought to offer trebuchet rides. Liabilities, shmiabilities. Zero to 150 mph in 2 seconds? That's more g-force than a drag race or shuttle launch. Adrenaline junkies would be dying to pay for it.
+Kevin Gray landing it would be interesting. Launching a light high speed capable glide craft however....

no gears the 2 wheels are on a solid axle, but there is a person who has a brake that goes under the wheel in case any one falls over to stop the wheels rolling back
Kind of makes sense in a way. Operating a trebuchet does not seem to require fire or ignition of any form....

+TacSav253 I think because it's dangerous to stand in that line. If anything goes wrong, the projectile might go that way. No park or museum would risk having people there.

@TheFartGallery Thanks for the comment i have to agree with the show they put on it used to be a little more serious before Merlin group took it over now its as you say getting americanised bit theme parky still the fire shots impressive
@nashimusD if they had put a fake breakable wall to knock down I would of shown it but unfortunatly they dont and as there arn't any castles under seige getting footage of castle walls tumbling is a little difficult to get, and showing the shot landing in an open meadow (which is what it does ) isn't exactly exciting either.

Don't judge people simply you deny saying a common mistake that even the presenter says it, ask medieval or roman reenactors they'd tell you the same.

I've heard that its incorrect to say 'fire' of a bow (or trebuchet) as well- and I'm no re-enactor.
Did they even have trebuchets with 'hamster wheels' like that to work the mechanism for bringing the arm down? It seems a little impractical and slow to me.

Seems the Merlin Group have not been a good takeover company? The whole experience at Warwick Castle or the WC of the Midlands . as it prefers to be called was cheesier than a Mozarella on cheese and tackier than Blue Tac Extreme but nevertheless it wasnt as bad as expected. We used to have a place called The American Adventure which was as authentic to the real Wild West as this place is to Medieval times in the UK ... it used to be daft but fun ...sadly the daft part took over eventually ...
Bob The Dragon never made it big then .. whew, eh? Pinnacle Studio eh? I remember those days ... well .. its Mac iMovie now for me... and I'm still crap at it! :-) But yes .. . American Adventure had great horse/cowboy/shootout scenarios that the kids really enjoyed and the whole thing was oddly very good ... then it turned into a money based pay as you go type arrangement and extra costs slipped in to the gate price .. then the paint got faded...as did eventually-the public interest accordingly

looking at the map on Google earth and measuring where the shots have landed it ranges from about 120 meters ( 394 feet) to around 160 meters (525 feet)

@TheFartGallery Bob is a Dragon in waiting his time will come (yeah right) still use pinnacle not bad software if you dont mind losing the film you've worked on, I remember those early days at American Adventure those shootouts were quiet good, if I remember rightly a few little stunts with people falling off buildings into covieniently placed haystacks great fun I remember going first when it was Britannia park it was a dive and the fence didnt go all the way round and you could sneak in

@TheFartGallery yeah I know the American Adventure not a lot left of it now went up there few months back, it was very odd walking round there and no rides or buildings only the overgrown crazy golf course and a few bearly recognizeable bases of buildings s Warwick castle yeah definatley that cheesy

But how do you aim it?
You calculate the trajectory based on mass of the counterweight and the projectile. It will always be an arc. More mass == higher distance.
Once placed, you can hardly move it though.

Probably looking at a minimum cost of a small trebuchet at around £10000+. Because you need skilled carpenters to make all the pieces which will have to be custom made. Then you need to hire workers to put the thing together.
