@@Sa3Tv I really like this R8 RWD, even though I am a proud BMW fan, it has the simplicity and clean approach I like.
The reason I have driven BMW's for over 20 years is ultimately because they have been RWD and with straight 6 engines, although now the newer models all seem to be AWD I am starting to look at other cars !
@@DjNikGnashers that's a fair point! I'm hoping to get to a bmw on my channel soon to get the full experience and my own opinion compared to my S3... I've always been curious to see why people have them and why it's more of a "drivers car" gonna be interesting!

@@clubgel the only reason to buy a hurracan over an r8 is to be seen. 90% of lamborghini owners could probably care less about the car, they just have it as a status symbol. But hey, what would I know, im just a jealous normie.

Detuned 🤔, nothing a quick remap couldn't sort to bring back that power, change out the paddle shifters. Seems like a no brainer to have this over the quattro, rwd smiles all day long ☺ ☺ ☺. Great video as always.

Wheels could literally switch out for some nice OZ or BBS etc. The exhaust tips in chrome look more garish, but who wouldn't put a nice exhaust on it.
Just purchased the M4 Competition Joe and I am getting 34.5mph in all the soft settings on the motorway, admittedly it is a new car and still running in prior the 1200 mile service but really impressed at the moment
Guessing it's a DCT, you wouldn't get more than 27-28 in a manual S55

Great review Joe, this is absolutely one of ultimate dream cars and a forever car for me, I love the fact that this is basically a cheaper lighter rwd huracan Evo but more subtle.

I actually like the regular black wheels. They’re attractive, but understated. Looks like they could be the upgrade wheels for a VW Passat.

I remember when I drove the R8 in its very first iteration right after it came out, I just had previously bought an A3 and they asked me if I was interested in going for a drive in it - which was kinda flattering given my young age and customer profile as I actually turned down an insanely good offer for a TT they had on stock at the time I ordered the brand new A3. I ve found the fact they d proactively encourage me to have a go in it surprising and great at the same time and a good idea to make ppl tied to the brand by encouraging them to have a go in what used to be a halo product to them.
I still value this attempt and to a degree it probably had its impact in making me like Audi as a whole even more and sticking to the brand ever since btw...but that clearly wasn t down to the R8 itself.... which was a huge disappointment.
My contact person certainly knew I was into cars but he didn t know I was quite familiar with 911s or the other extreme being a Morgan +8 and a Lotus Super 7 (I could barely fit in being 6ft3 btw). Whilst having loved the opportunity to drive it, I was deeply disappointed...its interior felt insanely dull, steering and driving experience felt much more muted and "safe" in a bad way even compared to its direct competitor at the time aka the 911 with far less practicability (tiny frunk, no real storage space inside) and it was nowhere near the excitement level of driving a Morgan or Lotus. The only upside was the lovely clicking manual gearbox which made me think of great Ferraris.
10y later in its newer - not the newest- iteration, I gave it another go...and again, I didn t find it convincing. Actually,I d be harsher in my critizism now, I find the interior outrageously horrid, the gap between Porsche and Audi has widened and yes, they made the newer R8 feel sharper but I m not even sure if that s such a good thing anymore, it still feels muted whilst being stiffer and it lost this glorious manual that used to be its main asset in my pov.
You haven t rly mentioned it but in my book, the steering is nowhere near Porsche level, neither is the gearbox. It might have the speed (which u mostly can t use) but in all that matters, it s far behind the 911 and let s not bring up every day use coz then it s definitely game over for the R8 in comparison. Look wise, I rly like its sharper new shape but everything else...well, not so much.
Joe my mate is a producer for Top Gear, I'm gonna tell him they need you as a new presenter ...damn sorry I made that up but if I did know a producer then you would get a knock on the door.

Great review Joe. Really these cars are what driving a supercar more than just on a fine day is all about. They are driveable, economical, cheap to insure (in Canada for me $800/yr) and are fast. Thanks from this RWS owner, couldn't agree with you more.

I hated the first R8 and loved the latest version. This basic spec is simply gorgeous, I'd love to drive it once.
Joe. 30mpg on a run is impressive for this car. I spoke to a guy on a garage forecourt when I was filling my TT and I asked him what his R8 did to the gallon and he said about 17.
Yeah it's so much better than the old 2017 plus version that was obviously quattro and had a shorter final drive, they used to sit at around 3000rpm at 70, this one purrs at just over 2000 👌

I like it when you mention the driving position for you in reviews (whilst always mention your height) - I'm the same height so I can now (regrettably) remove the R8 from the dream car list! (Love the car otherwise especially the NA V10)
Glad to hear it mate, I feel like a broken record, but as fortunate it is being tall, it does have its shortfalls too 😉
Also the main reason that this wouldnt feel much different if any to the quatto is the drivetrain losses will be less meaning that wheel horsepower will be better.

Great review Joe! Saw a couple of your videos and subscribed today. For the negative points I agree with you: the base wheels look inadequate, would definitely go for the optional 5-twin-spoke dynamic design, they transform the car. The second point, the paddle shifters, agree with you even more! However, you can buy really good quality aftermarket metal or carbon paddle shifters for the Audi R8 which look and feel like the ones in a Huracan. They are really easy to install. Third, my personal view, in Germany you can spec sideblades in ice silver or black for no additional cost and I think they really belong on a Audi R8 as they are unique for the car. Cheers!

I'm a self proclaimed BMW fan, but that R8 is an incredible car.
I like those wheels too, as diamond cut wheels are on everything, even the cheapest KIA cars etc, they look cheap and nasty. Those wheels look great.
It's not the best looking supercar, and those exhausts are ridiculous, but I like a lot of things about the design, including the less-is-more approach to the exterior trim, much cleaner.
The un-cluttered interior is lovely, driver focussed and easy on the eye.
Interesting to hear your opinions on the way it drives, and it sounds exactly like how I want a supercar to steer and turn. Never really been a fan of AWD in fast cars, because even though it may ultimately be the faster option, it certainly isn't the most fun. The fact you have to actually apply some skill to get off the line (probably more fun to turn EVERYTHING OFF traction control-wise) is the whole point. Just selecting launch and pointing the steering wheel in the right direction is such a boring way to drive, and was the reason I bought my affordable daily (M140i) over an S3 or GolfR.
Not sure I would buy the R8 over a 911 Turbo which start from £134,000 though .....

Rear wheel drive makes it a better drivers car & cheaper to build now if only there was a manual rwd option which would make it even more affordable & enjoyable but unfortunately car manufacturers are catering for all the traffic light drag queens
The rear wheel drive kit is not expensive & not difficult to fit, or should i say to remove. Your get no dashboard fault lights coming up, it a straight forward conversion. Few V8 have been done & it makes the steering a lot lighter. There is a twin supercharged V8 in the UK & there is not much can catch it, i am told.
Great video and content. I Love the R8, and love that road over the moors. I only live a few miles from this location, The lion inn is a great pub, you can easily get snowed in over here in winter time.

3:00 That's not true. Those are forged as well, they're the same weight. Also diamond cutting doesn't make them lighter, in fact diamond cut rims rust quicker and require maintenance.

This one only comes with an automatic. Even if I had the budget I would never buy one. And about the wheels. I would get the cheapest ones because I would replace them with aftermarket ones anyway. And I would put winter tyres on the originals.
Joe another in depth review any one thinking of getting one of this spec should take on board what you said about wheels, and as you will be paying all that money, surely Audi could be asked by the buyer to put parts on to suit the driver, and not just that`s what you get, if you dont`t like it, Tough!!! I mean come on, its`s not tuppence you are spending, I think they would say ye,s they are a much rarer car, you don`t see many, at least I haven`t!!!

Sorry, they have done it wrong in my opinion as they did with the previous model. They have gone for the 'cheaper' R8 entry than 'this is a GT3' competitor. Make it light great, but put a tweaked version of the V10 not the lower BHP one. Revised steering rack, less weight, special seats and you have something more compelling. The seats are poor in this R8 compared to the Mk1 buckets. Enthusiast R8 > entry level R8. They have a racing history with the R8, make a full on version. IMHO

The R8 when it first came out looked great , but as time has gone by the shape has tended to look a little clumsy from certain angles. If you look at it from the front at a 45 degree angle, it looks weird, doesn't seem to flow?
Probably get less transmission loss with the 2 wheel drive as well.
