At first, I thought the youngster might be the only taker because the others are older & have just become set in their tastes with more familiar nuts. But then along came Bram & some of the other regulars & in they tuck 🤷🏼 I guess macadamia nuts must just be a love/hate food for squirrels 🥜🐿

It's very interesting to see how varied the squirrels are with their preferences. For some reason, it seems unusual that one squirrel would like something and another wouldn't, but it's clearly the case. I happen to agree with Earl. Macadamia nuts are pretty good.
So many coming to stock up, but 2-3 said, "Get a grip Mom- I say 'nay-nay' to this caviar weirdness". Such fun to watch.
Oh, these squirrels are just too adorable! And your kitty is so caring towards them. I don't think the squirrels will manage to crack the macadamia nuts, even though they have very powerful lower jaw muscles. They seem to eagerly take the shelled nuts though. Thank you for taking care of these little fluffballs!
I just love this! I bought a bag of macadamia nuts for our little friends a couple of weeks ago... they took them and ran off... I never actually saw them eating one. 😆

I have a baby squirrel that comes to my window that wouldn't touch the macadamia nuts because he wasn't familiar with them yet. They only get them as a special treat around Christmas. Anyway I put a little almond butter on it knowing he would accidently take a bite. I was right and he loves them ever since. As much as my little ones trust me I am glad they have some fear for the unknown. It helps keep them safe!

I fed these along with walnuts and almonds to my two fox squirrel buddies. They ate them for the first few days and then never again.

I haven't seen any of your darlings eating the macadamias, just taking off with them. Most likely they are hiding them in hopes you will put out the good stuff. The little grey squirrel we had use to hide what he didn't want. One night I heard my husband using expletives and I turned on the light as he took a piece of broccoli out from under his pillow. Well, we knew who put that there.😖 Any way HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and yours and all your fur-babies!! Thank you for making my day a better one!

I’ve tried a few nuts as well. Mine love walnuts, pecans, almonds and peanuts but I got a huge no from them when I offered chestnuts. They didn’t care for pistachios or cashews either. Yesterday I gave my tamest little girl Snoot a Brazil nut and she was in heaven. She sat there eating it making little smacky num num noises as I chatted with her. Afterwards I wanted to kick myself for forgetting to take my phone out. Maybe I’ll be lucky enough she might come around for another one today.
lovely...those macadamia nuts look amazing! Yum I would have eaten them my favorite nuts. I have been feeding my squirrel walnuts in his tree lately as well..but I think the birds are also taking them...since I have some birds near my window as well.
Looks like the jury is still out on the Christmas special nuts. Mine always give me a hard time when I offer something new. Glad to see a few were willing to try.

Macadamias are really expensive. Nuts are, in general, but so is everything. I feed squirrels regular bagged roasted peanuts and even they are about $5/lb

I tried feeding the local squirrels macadamias, too, with mixed results. I'm sticking with walnuts.
My absolute favorite nuts. Chocolate covered nuts imported from Australia used to be a regular at Christmas here in Aotearoa New Zealand but, for some reason, l haven't seen them for a few years. Miss them geaps. Can't say l blame the squirrels for choosing the already shelled ones as the shells on macadamias are a nightmare.
They probably said to each other. Just grab one making her think you liked it. Then just go around the corner and throw it away. She will never know the difference. 😄

Try peanut butter and jam or jelly or a big Christmas cherry the kind that come in a bottle. They say cherries are the most loved fruits of small rodents .
Macadamias are native to Eastern Australia, of course, although grown in other countries now. So, as has been said, not a nut they usually encounter. Soon used to them.

Just a note... Macadamia nut shells are (probably) the hardest known..... I pounded on one with a hammer ans ended up with a crater in concrete.... shell hadn't cracked yet... .

I'm not sure if they can really smell through the Macadamia nut shell ? It's very dense and hard (plus, the nut itself is not so fragrant compared to walnuts for instance)

Hi Natalie, I had one in the garden yesterday and she pinched one of the figs off the tree, (surprised they're still on the tree to be honest) but she sat on the trellis and munched on it, not the trellis the fig. TFS, GB :)
OMG, The other day I was wondering if they ever had Macadamia Nuts!. Cutie was a no, but Youngster loved them, and influenced others.
It’s interesting to see how the squirrels are suspicious of a new kind of nut, even when they are offered by their trusted nut lady! I would think the youngsters would not have had enough time to get set in their ways and would be willing to try them. I think my squirrels would eat them - they demolish anything that is put on the platforms, even old bits of bird suet cakes and worse-for-wear (rainy weather) seed cylinders! They are so cute! Two saw me come out of my front door and scrambled down their tree so they could get to my backyard faster, even though i didn’t have nuts with me at the time! It’s hard to keep up with their appetites!
They seem to like peanut in shell most. Nothing better than peanuts!
Peanuts are ok, but walnuts and pecans are better. The best is to feed them a mix of nuts.
