The original art direction for TF2 that focused heavily on industrial 50s/60s Americana is one of my favorites in all of visual media. It created a nice balance of gritty cartoonishness that complimented the chaotic yet coordinated gameplay. One of a kind really and timeless.
@damsen978 Americana is a word and it means american culture mostly in relation to the united states. The word is commonly used in reference to the 50's-80's but can be used in many other cases.
Iikka Keranen (the maker of hydro, badlands, doublecross) was one of the best Doom mappers of the 90s, he worked on some very old Doom wads like STRAIN and Requiem, that's how I recognized his name and I had no idea he went on to work at Valve until now
6:53 There was gonna be a CTF version of Badlands, that would be more faithful to the TFC version. it was cut for some reason, but there is concept art and a realized version in the Pre-Fortress 2 mod.
Turbine being originally considered "outstanding quality" really shows how much TF2's community mapping scene has evolved since 2008. I mean, have you SEEN what those madlads did on Embargo?
@@hlibushok it looks sick as he'll but the gameplay kinda sucks on there: sniper sightlines are too long and the flanks aren't really their own thing and make it feel too much like a funnel to the capture points
Embargo's gameplay is way too varied with no genuine themes. Also the new pet item can confuse players with the (actually gameplay relevant) robots on the map. It is just not tf2.

Arena maps are so unfortunate. The game mode obviously flopped hard but the maps are amazing and converting them to KotH would be so simple. I would love to play a KotH version of Offblast or Ravine on official servers.
It's double unfortunate considering how the arena maps are such a part of the external perception of TF2. How many GMOD TF2 animations take place on Lumberyard, Watchtower, Offblast, etc. So many, and it's a shame they aren't used anymore. I 100% agree these Arena maps should be converted to KOTH maps so that we can experience these maps again without the stigma of Arena. They worked for SawMill and Nucleus, it can easily work for the others.
@@BeaverBotics2 The other arena maps are a little small for KOTH right now (which is probably why they were never converted by Valve) but I think they could definitely be turned into decent KOTH maps with some tweaking to expand them a little. New areas, paths, etc.
It didn't flop hard, did you play it at release? Because I'm betting you didn't. Everyone who joined TF2 post-F2P acts like they know anything about the glory days of Arena and assumed no one played it because they didn't implement it into Casual. There are nearly 3 years between the release of Arena & the 1st instance of Matchmaking and it had a healthy playerbase for much of that.
@@SnackPatrol Yeah and where are they now? Even three years in the span of this game is a drop in the bucket. Huff that copium lad, arena sucked and died. I've been playing this series since before TF2 even existed. Arena fizzled.
@@YakYo I have too, and it fizzled over years. 1 or 2 years is not a short period for people to be playing something. If I made a game that many people enjoyed over several years I'd consider it a success, too. Just because something wasn't the most popular game mode doesn't mean it didn't have its audience- the fact that Valve didn't support it with matchmaking was just as much the reason for its end as its lesser player count. It might have had a resurgence, even slightly, when the game went F2P but again it wasn't incorporated into matchmaking. If you have your "ear to the street" of TF2 you'd notice several people longing for some kind of Arena resurgence- it's still fun & Perks and Graveyard proved it last Halloween, even if it's a "change of pace" thing people queue for occasionally like Medieval.

Excellent compilation there, Whomobile! I hope that eventually you can get into the more zany new maps that have been added along with maps beyond 2010!
I get super nostalgic every time I see the arena maps that used to be so common to find a game for. I'll admit it was very frustrating and unforgiving haha. "Skill issue" for sure
14:50 the symbol the wiki references is the one at the bottom in 4th collumn from left. The one shown in the video looks like scout picking up his ball.
fun fact: goldrush had 2 verisons for raid mode 1 verison called Raid_teststage with only stage 2 from goldrush that has a boss arena that is connected to a basement made in red teams spawn which has a elevator that leads to the boss arena it also has respawn closets raid_goldrush a earlier verison when raid was just starting devolpment
"It isn't even on casual map queue" Arena is good and dopamine inducing. I think the problem as to why it isn't featured in Casual isn't because players hated it at the time, but because it's simply not up to the sheer quality of the other modes.
3:40 It`s always bug me is that Red are on the Defensive while Blu is the Attacker. Because their team company is the completely opposite from each others.
Does anyone else find the slight irony(?) (for lack of a better word) in turning vertical shorts into longer widescreen videos when most creators I'm aware of are reworking their existing content into shorts or TikToks? Whomobile is single-handedly saving GenZ's attention spans lol. On a serious note, I really appreciate the work put into this, especially actually using the original widescreen footage instead of just pillarboxing the uploaded shorts like some other people would've. Keep up the good work 👍 but don't feel pressured like you have to make any specific type of content, just whatever makes you happy.
Quick heads-up: your 2nd channel is very difficult to search for, the only way is through a main channel vid that has the link in the description, or by searching the 2nd channel's @. I'd like to ask you to change its name to something more searchable; it's really frustrating. And thanks for compiling all the shorts, it's extremely helpful and much more accessible now.
