    Finally got an offer for an EO role.
    Thank you

      Yep. I had an interview with The Coastguard. It went great. It was relaxed, honest, plenty of examples, we got on well. I later got my score: 1 out of 5. It's all about telling them what they want to hear, not about telling them the truth. Probably why our Civil Service is full of so many useless idiots.

      @@jsmith1561 haha so true. An interview is fundamentally a conversation. What is has become is a bizzare, robotic box ticking excerise. There is no discretion left in society, only mechnisation. It's horrible.

    • @thesixtywalrus
      @thesixtywalrus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jsmith1561 It depends. If you're too robotic and parroting overly rehearsed answers, they hate that too and will find a reason to score you low (e.g. "example didn't quite cover the expectations for this grade"). If you can be relaxed and honest, can give a clear and engaging STAR response, and answer probing questions well, you're more likely to score higher. And let's say you interviewed well and checked all the boxes, but for whatever reason they didn't like you, they can simply say another candidate scored higher.

    Been trying to get a civil service job for a certain department I did work experience at and really enjoyed it there and turns out there were some vacancies at.
    I got to the interview stages and done them (one pre-recorded one for one role and another face to face in another) but have unfortunately failed them both so didn't get the roles 🙈
    There is a new vacancy that popped up which the manager I was with in the work experience at emailed me notifying about it and have currently done the online situational judgement test, passed it, and now am waiting to see if they'll give me an email or not.
    I was talking to my work coach and a few others there too about it and they mentioned as well that the interviews are pretty tedious and are very specific with what they're looking for, especially looking out for certain key words you use as well as the format of how you give examples and whatnot to what they're looking for.
    Anyhow, my work coach actually told me to take a look at your videos so I'll be going through the whole journey of this Civil Service Interview playlist because honestly, I am losing faith in myself and thinking I did the interviews well, it's actually a lot more harder to do without knowing what exactly I should and shouldn't say!

    Hi Jack! Your videos are pretty unique. So, so much help when prepping but also when simply applying to these jobs with the civil service. Just the process of it is so daunting! For those of us who have recently graduated and don't have all that much work experience, could you perhaps make a video with a sort of list of actual questions you get asked for each case and the reply you would give? I find I tend to waffle in these because I feel that my student experiences are not serious enough for a civil service interview :-/

    Hi Jac
    In an interview that I did recently for a non civil service role, I found it very helpful to do extensive research into the company and the recent work that they had done. Do you think that this kind of preparation would be less useful for a civil service interview and do interviewers ever ask questions that will require you to show your passion/ knowledge for the work of that particular department?
    Thank you for making these videos!!! I have found them very useful in preparing for my first civil service interview.

    Very helpful, thank you! - A general question if I may? I'm not in the CS but have achieved quite a senior role (and a lot of experience) in the private sector. I am interested in applying to the CS, for grade 6/7 positions. In your experience, are these grades hired externally? Or does the CS prefer internal candidates for these relatively more senior positions?

    • @JacWilliamsVideo
      @JacWilliamsVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome Lloyd, glad it was helpful. Yes - they are definitely hired externally. Numerous external G6/G7's have been hired recently in my area. Generally there are two types of job advert in the CS. Internal, where the advert is only visible to existing Civil servants in that organisation. Or External, where anyone can apply.

      @@JacWilliamsVideo Thanks for this info! Okay, got it. One other question if you have a moment is: Should the initial (written) application also be submitted with Success Profiles / STAR in mind? eg, the initial personal statement and CV text fields should (in the space available) speak more about the desired behaviours?

    • @JacWilliamsVideo
      @JacWilliamsVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve actually just made a video about this. Will be up on Friday :) i recommend going through the persons criteria and giving example that hit each point. No need to STAR at this stage as the word count won’t allow for a very detailed example for each. There maybe the kind of form which gives a few behaviours and then asks for 250 words for each. In this case use STAR.
