- Talking Scripture is please to present this series by Bryce Dunford: The Atonement of Christ: a weekly study. Given President Nelson’s invitation to study the atonement of Christ each week for the rest of our lives, Bryce would like to share what he has discovered in his study of His atonement. A new episode will post each Sunday.
This is Episode 11: Restored Thru Repentance
Many misunderstandings exist regarding repentance. Some view is as a check-list. In this video, Bryce contends that the Book of Mormon presents a different idea: repentance is about restoring a damaged relationship with Christ, damaged by something we have done. And then we change our behavior so that we do not lost His presence again.

Wonderful Brother Bryce! There’s a primary song called “As I Walk With Jesus”.
As I walk with Jesus
To my home above,
He will bless me with His Spirit
And fill me with His love.
Change my heart forever
And help me clearly see
As I walk with Jesus
He will walk with me.
Thank you for filling my 3rd hour reservoir! Loved this. Amen.

Thank you 🙏 I’ve watched all of your atonement videos and I just love the way you teach and every time I watch you I feel the Holy Spirit testify that this is truth.
Question: do you have a video on fasting? If not can you make one. I’ve never comprehended the need of it in my life. But if it will bring me and my family closer to Christ then I want to understand it and do it.
I can do that.
Yes! Im so intrigued on how our savior did fast for 40 days will you be so kind to help us understand how He achived that? Please...is a genuine question that I haven't been able to answer to this day.
Thanks Brother Bryce.
@@brendabowers3792 I know brother Dunford will have a great teaching of this topic. I just want to share my own expérience about fasting. I noticed each fasting day the 'natural' part of me is less strong. My 'spiritual' part goes stronger. So if I want to become like Christ, meaning a total change of heart, I need to fast. Even if it is so hard to fast. Days before each fast Sunday I ask Heavenly Father to help me because I know that by myself I do not have the strenght to do it. Each time at the end of fasting I am amazed to have been able to do it and I know it is because God helped me.
@@brendabowers3792 another thing. When I was taught the gospel by the missionaries décades ago m'y désire was great to receive a strong testimony. I read all the scripture available in my langage at that time and I fasted for 3 days. I received a strong answer from God. Fasting is a strong tool to get closer to Deity.
Thank you.
Bryce, I absolutely love your teachings about repentance. The spirit strongly testified of their truthfulness. But I must confess that I fall into the group of people that believed there was a “checklist” of steps to complete in order to fully repent, thus leading to not feeling joy in daily repentance.
My question is, why is this mindset so prevalent among members of the church of Jesus Christ? How did it come about that so many of us misunderstood the repentance process?
We have an enemy that wants to destroy what would help us the most. Just like “the evil spirit teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him that he must not pray…” he also wants to confuse repentance.
Once again, a wonderful lesson! I just read 3 Nephi and I think these scriptures are perfect:
3 Nephi 9:13 - will ye not now return unto me, and repent of your sins, and be converted, that I may heal you?
3 Nephi 9:20- offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit.
3 Nephi 10:6 - repent and return unto me with full purpose of heart.
What if, after repairing the relationship with Christ, other people won’t accept it, or allow you to ever forget or believe you’ve done enough?
Let them think what they want. If you have His forgiveness, nothing else matters.
Stawanda, I had two thoughts. If the broken relationship was just between you and the Lord, then it's not anyone else's business. But if the broken relationship with the Lord also broke other relationships in your life, then that can be especially difficult for the person ( or persons) involved. I think that restitution, wherever possible, is vital. And, it takes time for people to trust that they can again put their faith in someone who has broken trust. So it requires being newly trustworthy again and again and again until the fear in their hearts is gone.
Secondly, maybe you can get the people in your life to watch the wonderful talk " Remember Lot's wife " by Elder Holland. He makes a heartfelt plea to everyone to LET PEOPLE REPENT and change and grow. It's beautiful. 😊
Sometimes you need to let the people you hurt cry out to you about what you did. And you need to let compassion take over and let them be angry with you. Be patient and serve them even if they don’t know you are serving them. Always pray for them…and you! Keep all names on the rolls of the Temple. Live the Gospel. And don’t give up on them or on yourself. Some things take time.
The sin of being “implacable”
“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6: 14-15
Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: ROMANS 1:31
Implacable: unwilling to extend mercy, holding others hostage because of their former sins, unwilling to forgive and taking judgement upon others while excusing their own sins, void of compassion and love
Sometimes on our journey in life, we stumble and fall and on occasions we might struggle and find it most difficult getting up especially when someone is watching us. Then there’s the situation where the circumstance renders us incapacitated for a considerable amount of time and the only way to arise is from a helping hand.
Imagine finding yourself prostrate and in pain on the ground having eyes glaring at you, seeking solace yet the bystanders are murmuring to each other and pointing the finger and walk on, without the arm of mercy extended.
They know not the reason of your fall nor do they seek to investigate to consider or are willing to intercede on your behalf.
And in your hour of sorrow, you call out for relief, but finding your plea fallen on deaf ears.
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. Romans 1:31-32
Perhaps you or a loved one have felt the scorn and rebuke of others who after committing a transgression are seen as “unclean” and unworthy of mercy, and subject to further judgement. Denied the blessing of forgiveness through the repentance process.
The Saviour’s rebuke is His discourse condemns such actions. “Implacable-those who are not willing to forgive and at times heap on grievous burdens on the suffering.
Holding a grudge or seeking to sustain guilt on those seeking relief and redemption, who find no such relief. We see them on social media and in our communities and sadly in our homes. Unfortunately, at times the callous and unmerciful, walk beside us in the ranks of faith. Hence Paul’s admonition to the faithful who are unguarded in their judgements.
Stephen was one such victim, being a fellow citizen yet his accusers and those who chose stones to smite him unto death withheld mercy but pronounced justice on the innocent.
And they stoned Stephen, (Stephen) calling upon God, and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit”. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge”. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. Acts 7:59-60
When we refuse to forgive, “neither will your Father forgive your trespasses”. Not only is the condemnation that Lord places on the individual for being “implacable” (merciless) but the personal sins of the individual compound the judgements upon their own heads.
Let us, like unto Him that showed us the greatest of mercies and paid our debts so that we may be free and lifted us from our fallen state and nourished us with tender mercies, so that we may do the same to those who cross our paths and repay with the same honour.
“Wherefore I say unto thee, her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little”. Luke 7:47
We find malice, hate and derision in social media and in individuals who delight in the suffering of others or in retribution of so-called justice without merit or evidence; imprison emotionally or incarcerate physically and in some extremes taking the life of others because “self” defence is excused for supposed, “self” judicial right and condemnation, holding others hostage to their past sins while claiming moral superiority. To such comes the justice of a just God and the weight of the greater sin.
Dógma kai Diathíkes 64:8-
There are those among you who have sinned; but verily I say, for this once, for mine own glory, and for the salvation of souls, I have forgiven you your sins. I will be merciful unto you, for I have given unto you the kingdom.
There are those who have sought occasion…….without cause;
……. but verily I say unto you, I, the Lord, forgive sins unto those who confess their sins before me and ask forgiveness, who have not sinned unto death.
My disciples, in days of old, sought occasion against one another and forgave not one another in their hearts; and for this evil they were afflicted and sorely chastened.
Wherefore, I say unto you, that ye ought to forgive one another; for he that forgiveth not his brother, his trespasses standeth condemned before the Lord; for there remaineth in him the greater sin.
I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men.
I'm afraid of God...that's why repent.
Anytime we repent, it’s a good thing. But repenting out of fear has significant limitations. I would encourage you to go back and watch video 4 in this series.
I'm a little confused. Because if there is no checklist for repentance, then why do young people feel that they have to go talk to the bishop for certain mistakes? And why does the bishop have them stop taking the sacrament for a couple of weeks or have them read a book and give him a book report or some similar thing, and then the person is declared righteous again?
Why can't our young people just turn again to the Lord without the bishop?
That has to do with membership in the church. There is a standard you have to meet for membership. When you came in, you had an interview to make sure your life was above that standard. Any time your life dips below that standard, you need to reconcile with a representative of the church to see if you can still maintain your membership. That’s why not just young people, but all people whose life dips below that standard need to talk to their bishop. That has to do with membership in the church.
That forgiveness is forgiveness on behalf of the church in order to maintain your membership.
The problem is that that becomes seen as the essence of repentance. Maintaining my membership in the church is very important. But if I forget that repentance for justification is about my relationship with the Savior, I am missing something much higher.
Repenting for major mistakes that threaten my membership in the church should not be very frequent. But repenting for things that I did today that pulled me away from the Savior is a daily activity. Far more common than going to confess to my bishop. That should be seen as the standard of repentance.
I believe that if we focus on the daily acts of repentance that restore that relationship with the Savior, our need for confessing to the bishop will dramatically diminish.
@@talkingscripture Thank you so much. That clears up the confusion that I had. I really appreciate it 🙏
@@talkingscripture That is by far the most clear description/distinction/explanation I have ever found between the two. Thank you!
