    I would have appreciated more close-ups. Especially for the wire technique. I can’t seem to get the hang on that loop bending 90 degree angle thingy.

    Love the hints and tips and techniques. I like taking old jewelry and taking it apart and making new things for gifts and giveaways. I have tons of pearls that I have bought at garage sales and I am going to try restringing.

    I watched a video where the person used a crimp tool the wrong way, but I didn’t realize that until now. No wonder I was having issues with the crimp beads breaking at times. I’ll be less stressed next time I use crimp tubes and beads now that I’ve seen this video.

    Love the videos and Love your enthusiasm however like the other comments, some of Us just need that “Wire Looping” shown a wee bit Slower Pleeease. The part of initial looping in the beginning is understood, it’s just the first pick up of our tool then replacing the wire then turning our needle nose pliers then twisting again it just gets to be complicated.

    definitely cheaper to learn how to wire wrap and create your own head pins, eye pins, open/close jump rings. But as for creating decorative chains from wire i tend to favor just buying them as making them is very very tedious. Though i am curious if you have any good methods or perhaps a cheap home user machine that can make different decorative chains? Industry machines pump these out by the kg daily.

    Thank you, Susan! I'm glad you agree with me on the Easy Knotter. I love it, because I don't have to think through the steps (easiest to use), plus get the knots right up against the beads with ease. Just want to mention, you didn't say anything about pre-stretching the elastic cord. I was always told it is necessary, but is it?

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think you meant the silk cord since you are talking about knotting. Yes. Absolutely always wet and stretch silk cord before knotting. If you do not, it will stretch later and you will end up with space between the knots and the beads. If you meant the elastic here is an answer I previously posted addressing this. “The jury is out on this one! I use elasticity and I have never found that I have to do that, but many people swear by this trick. It certainly does not hurt the elastic to pre-stretch it so stretch away!”

    Would flat nose pliers work as crimping pliers?

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Here is a comment about this from Susan Thomas: "Flat crimping works for crimp beads (not the tubes). You can use a flat nose plier - although the tip is a bit bulky and may get in the way a bit. A chain nose plier would be better." Hope this helps!

    I am crafting some simple jewelry pieces for my outdoor sales stand. I’ve been making pies and jams but with COVID-19 a lot of people are afraid to even approach the table. So I am branching out into including jewelry on the front table and putting the Pie And Jam in the shade which is probably better anyway for the food. I’m just looking for simple techniques and your tutorial gave me everything that I will probably need.

    Have to agree with others on here ...
    More zoom in needed, slow down & also items in the background too distracting ... and ... as with other videos of yours ... the materials that you are working with often blend into the background colour or your hands ... and cannot be clearly seen !
    Other similar channels seem to have these points in check.
    I think you need to check ... because you clearly think that your viewers can see your demonstrations better than they really can !

    I have a question. Instead of the bead stopper, why wouldn't you just put a clasp on one end before you start beading? Seems like it would waste less wire.

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Katy! I prefer a bead stopper in case I want to change up the design - add a little more to one end, mix it up, or completely start over - but adding one half of the clasp is a fine way to do it too!

    hi, I was wondering, what is the difference between the soft wire and hard wire, I guess uses. I see some projects and sometimes don’t know if its a hard or soft wire your using. I’d like to do some heavier wired earrings with swirls, I’m just a little confused about which to use and when, all the way down to making earring hoops and the hooks you use , do you use a hard wire for the hooks on earrings and soft for bending swirl type decorative loops. Hope this makes sense. Thanks, Lori

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally makes sense, Lori! Check out this swirl earring tutorial with soft wire. It describes how to make post more stiff by twisting it. facebook.com/jewelschool/posts/2928301597192781?mcid=XSOjsyt
      In general, we recommend using half hard or hard for earring hoops and hooks. Good luck!

      Just find a thin nail and hammer it into some thin wood, then use a ruler and marker to make the measuring lines. You can file the nail flat and make a cap with whatever you want. Like an old cork or dried clay/playdough(does not last long, playdough crumbles ).

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ellen! This is from Susan: Any wire will eventually break if you stress a certain point over and over again. Bending it work hardens it to the point if being brittle. Some wire just does it faster. Hope this helps!

    • @JewelSchool

      This will largely depend on the size of the hole in your pumpkin bead coupled with the type of design you are trying to accomplish. Honestly, you'll just have to test it out with a few different gauges, but most beads will require 20ga wire or smaller.

      Great question! I add a clasp juts the same as always -- thread the silk through a crimp bead, then the clasp finding and back through the crimp bead (on both ends). Crimp, snip, and go!

    My wire necklaces break for no reason. I use 26 gauge wire ? What is wrong?

      you need to use coated wire.... regular wire can only be moved/bent so many times and it will break. add chain on the end w/closure so you don't have to bend the wire

      This is a tough one without seeing what is happening! You may be using too small a wire gauge for your project. When wire wrapping, you should use the largest gauge that will fit through the hole in the stone so there is not a lot of wiggle room for the wire. The more the wire can move in the hole the more it can twist, bend and break. The other possibility is you may be scoring your wire with your tools. Whenever possible when making connectors with wire, you should switch from round nose pliers to chain nose or flat nose pliers to hold the wire. Round nose pliers can score wire, making a weak spot that will break more easily and in the case of very fine wires like 26 or 28 gauge, round nose pliers can even cut the wire!

      Mine dont breake but more the wire slips off the crimp bead or whatever is called, even when i place good pressure to it. 🤔
      But, in another channel i saw there are some special pliers, that can clamp those metal beads but that same plier has a section in the tip that after flating the metal bead, it will turn it into a circle.

      Hi Marianne! The Jewel School gave you good advice regarding this problem. However, I would add that craft wire is weaker than sterling silver wire. Additionally, any time you bend wire it changes the integrity of the wire. More specifically, the movement causes heat which means you can easily overwork a wire. For instance, sterling wire becomes stiffer with movement and will weaken and break when it’s overworked. Craft wire becomes wobbly and softer as it is overworked. anything smaller than 24 gauge wire is most appropriate for earrings. This is because earrings are lightweight and not exposed to the pulling and adjustments that the wearer makes when putting on and taking off. As mentioned, choose a wire that fits the stones properly. Usually 26 gauge and smaller is needed for very small (2mm or less) precious and semiprecious gemstones, and pearls. However, keep in mind, that anything smaller than 24 gauge is not especially functional for weight bearing designs. Finally, metal weakens as it oxidizes and the main culprits of corrosion are oxygen and water. Storing jewelry in dry, airtight containers will ensure your designs have the opportunity for a longer life.

    Great video; thanks! Since I am not interested in buying a cheap set of two or three pieces for under twenty dollars which is what I keep seeing other places, can you please tell me what brand(s) of tools you are using in this video? I have done a descriptive text search on line as well as a logo and image search and cannot find the brand. Thank you~

    What is the name of cement you used? My hearing is off! I reversed the video to listen again. I looked on links, didn't see a tube that looked like your tube of cement.
    Thank you again for great video.
