    I would really appreciate a tutorial on the different types of wire eg, gold plated, sterling silver, etc. Which ones tarnish?

      That's exactly what I was wondering. I'm not confused by the size, but if I'm to sell jewelry at a higher price, it needs to last and not tarnish.

      Hello! Thanks for asking about this. Unless wire has a tarnish-resistant coating added during manufacturing, all metal tarnishes over time to varying degrees. You can use polishing cloths to keep your metals polished! And here is a video about different kinds of jewelry-making wire :) th-cam.com/video/tAZFeAQ8iIE/w-d-xo.html?mcid=XSOjsyt

    Can you please tell me which is better, tinted copper (with silver colour) or non tarnish silver colour plated wire from artistic wire? and also which brand is the best for these wires Parawire or Artistic wire (or if you can recommend another brand I can find in local shops that would be great). And lastly, I bought a couple of wires that were stainless steel not knowing they were stiff and hard to work with, so I was wondering if using a one step looper would help make things faster and easier or would it just damage the plier? I bought a flush cutter and can already see dents and its not as sharp as it was when I first bought it. Do you think the same thing would happen to the one step looper? Thank you for your time! 💓💓

    I just discovered Susan’s videos and have been binge watching them. So skilled, clear, insightful and such beautiful designs. Unfortunately, I bought a lot of wire before watching her videos, so I have a lot of 22 gauge wire. I haven’t seen any tutorials that use this size yet. Does Susan have any tutorials using 22 gauge wire (aside from eyepins)? Or does anyone else have a favorite tutorial that uses this wire size? Thank you in advance!

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't fret about having too much 22ga. You can use it for all sorts of things because it is a good general-purpose wire. It's a bit too thick to fit through most beads, BUT it has excellent durability and is easy to work with for most jewelry projects. We'll see if we can't feature it in a video for you! By the way, You can never have too many eye pins or head pins! Jewel School is always sold out of the pre-made ones. Take this opportunity to make a bunch of them. You might even be able to sell some to fellow crafters in need!

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Martha! It depends on the type of allergy. Usually, it's best to stick to a pure metal like gold or silver. You can see if a gold plated wire 14k, 10k, etc.(where the gold is touching your skin and not the base metal) might work. Good luck!

    Love your videos. I completely new to jewelry making and your videos are my number 1 go to. I use silver plated wire to make the items in ur video. I am noticing nicks and scratch’s. When I try to buff out it seems to show a light copper underneath. You don’t use the plastic on ur tools. Wondering what I am doing wrong. And when I burnish an end it takes off the silver completely. Advice would be greatly appreciated

    Thank you for the information. Silver plated, gold plated do tarnish overtime so how or what is needed to clean those tarnished silver plated or gold plated jewellery to bring back its shine? While cleaning those plated wires beads do come in contact, so will beads get damaged while cleaning those plated wires?

  • @LateBoomer1964

    The reason gauge goes from the highest number for the thinnest wire to the smallest number for the thickest wire is...The tool used to measure wire thickness is called a "gauge" which is a round ring with a hole inside. It takes less thicker wires to fill that gauge. so the number is smaller. It takes more of a thinner wire to fill that hole so the number is higher. I hope this helps with a visual to remember the gauge of wires.

    That's funny. The different gages are just like in healthcare then in terms of the gage of the needle. An 18G is a larger needle to draw up solution & a 25 gage is a smaller needle we use to administer medication. I didn't realize it crossed over into other industries. Very informative video.

    @JewelSchool can you do gemstone beading on silver wire of 0,5mm? will it last in time? and also all the bending in the making process?

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! This is probably a 24/25 gauge. So, this is a hard question to answer because it totally depends on what type of beading you’re doing and the size of the holes in the gemstones. 24g is flexible but not the most flexible. You can definitely bead with it but again, wire selection is completely dependent on the project, the technique, and the beads. Wish there was a more straightforward answer, but hopes this helps!

    Learning gauge is essential, but plz I want more! Chains are crazy, so many different types, and I imagine as many uses. But 1 thing I am stumped on, types of wire. What I would like to know is what wire is silver coloured, tarnish resistant will not lose its colour. Sterling silver, silver plated, silver coated and silver filled! Copper core or iron? Stainless steel looks it. And I would love to try antique bronze. But above all, I would love it if the pieces I will be making do not tarnish, rust, lose colour, have their core exposed and not turn anyones skin a different colour. I have also heard there is an anti tarnish wipe for your metals? But most metals are not alone, they come with beads, gems and othr goodies. How safe is it for them? Any tutorisls along these lines? Or books? I am so new to this, I have not even made 1 piece of jewelry yet, but very hopeful. Help plz!

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Patricia! Beadalon’s artistic wire. Parawire’s plated wire. Both are great tarnish resistant, plated wires that hold their finish. If you want your sterling, copper or brass NOT to oxidize, you can spray with an acrylic sealer, which generally speaking does not hurt the beads. You can also consider using Argentium silver which is less likely to tarnish. I oxidize everything…so problem solved

      Hi Monique! We are currently working on this very tutorial!. However a quick answer for you would be:
      1. Dead soft wire is basically be used for wire wrapping projects.
      2. Half hard is for making components, like headpins, ear wires and jump rings that need to hold their shape.
      Hope this helps!

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Glad you're enjoying the videos! I think your design is going to depend on your design. If you're going to have some wire wrapping, you will need a wire that 1) fits the hold in your beads (should you be using them) and 2) that is malleable enough to wrap tight. 22ga, 24g, 26ga and up would work. The higher the gauge, the more flexible the wire. The base that goes into the hair should be a bit sturdier like 16ga. Check out this tutorial that specifically shows you how to make a basic hair pin. You can add your own special touches after that! th-cam.com/video/3xKd3LX-qFw/w-d-xo.html

      @@JewelSchool Thanks for responding. I already ordered a .45mm wire, that would be 25 gauge I guess? I hope I get the correct wire. And yes, I'll be using beads of different sizes but mostly would be 3 or 4mm. Would that be okay? Tbh, I've been making diy jewelries, nothing special, just for myself, before but I really don't bother knowing the sizes or names of the things I use. I just use my mom's tools or just grab anything at a store that I think I would be needing. So these videos are really helpful educating me. Thanks again for the links. I will check it out later.

    The wires you have in this video, are they dead-soft, half-hard, or full-hard?

    Hi there, thank you for a super & instructive video. Does this same technique apply to using sterling silver wire? (The video did not disclose what wire material was used and it would be great to know what the demo contained) Thank you :)

      @JewelSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can use sterling silver wire. The wire in the video is a plated wire, meaning it has a metal alloy as a base and is coated in sterling silver.

    Is it super thin the 30 Gauge wire to wrap murano beads around necklaces? The reason I like very thin wire is because I want it pretty much to be invisible.

    0:25 the way I remember this (higher # = thinner wire & smaller seed beads)
    Picture an inch on a ruler. If you were to line up wire pieces from 1 end to the other, you'd only need 16 of the thicker wire (16 gauge) but you'd need 24 pieces of the thinner wire(24gauge)
    This goes for seed beads too ! i.e. it'd take 15¿gauge? itty bitty seed beads to fill the same space that it'd take only 6larger beads to fill.
    I don't know if this makes sense outside my brain; I only got about 45 mins/sleep last night bc of sick baby girl

    Need some advice..
    I'm making a Japamala with 108 tigers eye beads. ( 10 mm beads) . I want a very durable thread because my purpose is to wear it on shoulder where pressure is applied daily when I sit and etc.. so it's gonna be a tough time for the thread and the last thing I want is me collecting 108 beads on spread on the floor like a maniac. And I'm new to this whole beading world full of threads and know nothing about them. Yeah , so can you please recommend the most durable and suitable brand , thread and size for the purpose. Lots of love for this video 🤘

      Hi Lakmal! Here is some advice from Katy:
      1. Easiest method : silk cord that has needle attached BDWE07E - use the largest size that will fit through your beads…I would start with size 8 or size 10 or maybe even size 12…it just depends on the hole size.
      Here is one option: www.jtv.com/product/griffin-silk-thread-size-08-70-mm-028-in-in-brown-with-needle-2-m-6-5-ft-/BDW070E?mcid=XSOjsyt
      2. This silk JMBKIT574 along with the gum arabic JMBKIT596 to dip the end into and create a hard end to string your beads through.

    Thanks for this great video. Question.... are you using hard or soft wire?

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sally! It depends on the project. Hard wire is used for components that you need them to hold their shape like ear wires and jump rings. Soft wire is used more for wrapping projects since is more malleable. Hope this helps!

    have you done or will you do a video about the soft, half hard wire etc.??

      @JewelSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a great video that explains different kinds of wire for jewelry-making. Check it out! th-cam.com/video/tAZFeAQ8iIE/w-d-xo.htmlmcid=XSOjsyt
      In general, you are not going to want to use dead soft wire for anything that needs to hold shape, like a jump ring, ring, headpines, etc.

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is specifically a tarnish resistant plated craft wire. They have a base metal, usually copper or brass and then permanently colored with a silver tone. The wire brand is Parawire. Sterling Silver and Gold plating is also available as well as a range of different colors. www.jtv.com/category/jewelry-making/wire/_/N-451581875
