I don't know why, but I've been checking the comments on all these clips from this podcast, and they are nearly unanimously hating sam. I actually listened to the podcast and thought he explained things very well, sure there are things people have reasonable objections to, but the outright hatred for this man seems unwarranted
I agree. What is the issue with these comments? He is so eloquent and well reasoned. I have always enjoyed his work.

Sam was a huge disappointment through covid.
As I have said from the beginning of COVID: Follow the money.... The money never lies.
Indeed, pretty much the _only_ political question: _Cui bono?_ *_Who benefits?_*
Spoiler: corporate capital (by extension finance capital aka wall street aka privatized currency aka the "invisible hand" "central planners" hiding in plain sight) and more broadly the capitalist class (defined by one's _material_ relation to property in terms of ownership and control) benefits at the zero-sum expense of the working class (shocker).
People aren't like inherently "good" or "bad"...so long as capitalism is the undergirding 'mode of production', it entrenches the broader interests of the capitalist class inherently diametrically opposed aka zero-sum _against_ the working class, this power disparity/class dynamic fuels production but concentrates over time and inevitably yields one class's domination over the other, the state itself idealistically a mediator between these social classes then becomes merely a political cudgel by the capitalist class over the working class. And thus, as some guy put it like 150+ years ago, _"the executive of the modern state is but a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie_ [owning class/capitalist class/employer class]."
This is inevitably what happens when "the market" becomes de facto god, social meaning and trust is hollowed out and sold for profit, consent for a largely ideologically concealed global imperialism manufactured and sublimated into a spectacle of kayfabe entertainment for folks arbitrarily born/located in the "consumer of last resort" US imperial core. Coupled with an inevitably cultivated 'business ontology' that conceives of "rationality" as a narrow tunnel-vision concerned with only one's own self-serving material benefit, and unsurprisingly transient insatiable self-serving narcissism is prioritized above any other values as a result. _"The bourgeoisie has torn away from the family relationship its sentimental veil and has reduced it to a mere money relationship."_
The mode of production of capitalism is at the root here as it alone is what organizes material reality at its most foundational level in terms of ownership/control of property, out of which social relations (language, art, culture, law/government, etc.) emerges layered on top, shaping our entire ontology and thus directing the way we perceive both reality and each other.
Without an awareness of this class dynamic that generates and directs these tidal _material_ forces that shape our external reality and relations to one another, aka a _class_ consciousness, the trajectory of humanity, as everyone knows at some level regardless of their ability to articulate why, has its final destination firmly set toward civilizational collapse, a thanatos embrace toward the _"common ruin of the contending classes."_
As Mussolini's March on Rome illustrates, when analogues to the paramilitary blackshirts posture their support for capital and small-holder bourgeois by beating up labor leaders, this is met by approval from those that stand to benefit from this, which importantly includes a vast majority of supposedly self-declared "left" or "liberal" small-holders/landed-gentry aka the "bourgeoisie". As the adage goes, "scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds". This includes technocratic impersonal structural violence that reinforcing the divine right of "the market" entails (like raising interest rates, a la Volcker shock to increase the "reserve army of the unemployed" to reduce labor power).
The 'fascism' that liberals (or what Sam seems to term the "radical left" lol...support for capitalism is the only question of one's "left" tendencies) are concerned with is merely aesthetic (pretty clearly so as they simultaneously cheerlead support for literal nazi battalions in Ukraine which the US has cultivated since the immediate end of WWII, putting _literal SS_ like Otto Skorzeny or Reinhard Gehlen, who in fact ran the West German intelligence BND, directly on the CIA's payroll; clearly I digress lol but for extremely relevant history of the US empire's political cudgel over Europe aka NATO, see: Operation Gladio, CIA is essentially the SS 2.0 for global corporate/finance capital), not so much the actual content of it which is essentially a more forceful/honest version of what liberals themselves agree with/promote, _"the suppression of the left amidst popular enthusiasm"_ (Paxton in The Anatomy of Fascism). As Michael Parenti perfectly put it,
_"Fascism is a false revolution. It makes a revolutionary appeal without making an actual revolution. It propagates the widely proclaimed New Order while serving the same old moneyed interests."_
To echo Rosa Luxemburg from 1918 Germany, before of course being executed by the freikorps paramilitary (later becoming that SS, shocker) at the behest of Ebert's ostensibly _social democratic_ SPD party, almost immediately resonating the truth of such a succinct political dichotomy to this day:

I wrote on a different Lex Clip criticizing Sam. However, this one was completely reasonable and well articulated so credit to him and Lex for the ping pong of good and evolving discussion. I don’t care for eloquence and am not swayed by flowery language so although a number of commenters have said it’s because he’s well spoken that’s irrelevant to my updated opinion. Cheerio :)

I find it funny the main arguement against Sam Harris is the ad hominem attack "he thinks he knows everything". No contrarians actually attacking his arguments!
Even for the things he's wrong about, Sam is the one being great at Bayesian reasoning, adjusting his priors based on evidence. Instead, the contrarians count the hits where they were right and forget the misses. They chalk up major wins to nothing but coin flip guesses whenever they turn out to be correct; which is the very opposite of Bayseian reasoning when there is limited knowledge.
There's a lot of insane straw men in these comments too. One of the first ones was "Sam admires the governing style of North Korea and would prefer it if he had the choice." Oh, what a mic drop!

I have no fears about the immediate impact of the vaccines. I have been concerned from the beginning about our policies and responses from the virus's emergence to the release of the vaccines. The negative consequences of the lockdowns are abundant. Sam's question about future responses is important. An objective review is necessary to answer the following:
Is a complete shutdown of society and our economy ever justified when a novel virus emerges?
Did officials knowingly exaggerate the potential harm of the virus in order to justify the lockdowns?
How should we judge/examine the recommendations of experts and officials when they are likely to benefit personally, politically, or financially from the results of their recommendations?
How do we balance the benefits to some group of people versus the harm to others when they become evident especially now when we know the good and bad of interventions have not been spread fairly?

If the virus can cause more harm to society and our economy than a shutdown then unquestionably yes.

No, they downplayed the potential harm so that they could half ass the lockdowns, making them ineffective. And at that point I'd suggest not doing lockdowns at all. Either whole ass the lockdowns or not at all IMO.
When an entire system is captured under the threat of expulsion from that system that a person has spent half their life trying to learn in, that's a problem. Sam is so narrow minded and compartmentalized in his thinking. I feel like Lex dropped the ball on this interview. He just sits there and allows Sam to go on and on without pointing out problems that all of us face in the systems he speaks of.

If Sam got cancer I highly recommend he speaks to cancer victims. Like a lot of cancer patients do. They can help with treatment, your family and common sense in what to come. So doctors help but so do people who have it. It's not just experts you should check with. So that example isn't the best. Also Sam named right wing cults but the left wing cults of woke, BLM and antifa he left out. Sam has gone biased and passed reason. But I've seen it with all the podcasters. Tbh Rogen and Lex at least have a mix the most. Also if there is another pandemic we've learnt a lot like vulnerability studies like age are important, we need to know straight away where this came from, tbh Sam should realise that the world did lock down so if there is a deadly pathogen that kills kids the world did ok even with such a financial cost. Then the last one about Kayne I think Lex did well. It's easy for Sam to say that after the podcast. Now most people think Kayne has a huge ego and we saw the real Kanye at that time, someone suffering. That's all I saw. I liked Sam but he's bitter more and more.

I read the comments first, and knew KNEW that Sam had touched on this topic - the egos of many people outweigh their common sense and certainly their intellect because experience and expertise matters from a utility and a risk based perspective. We saw this especially during this pandemic where the impact - the folly associated with the average person making decisions that they amplified across the internet with "like minded" individuals resulting in huge amounts of pain and suffering and death that did not have to occur.

He sees the war in Ukraine the same way as he sees COVID.. because we have experts we can listen to. Thats true on COVID.. but in the western world, we do NOT have unbiased experts on this war (or other wars) that will tell us the truth.
There was so much misinformation from the top from the very beginning of COVID that it became impossible for anyone to be an expert. The Wuhan lab deleted all their data, the Chinese lied and obfuscated at every step, and US health officials prioritized conspiring to cover up their own misdeeds over the public well being. In this setting, one learns quickly to be skeptical of anyone claiming to be an expert.
The “experts” that deluged the news feeds got very little right. The experts that were silenced predicted everything we are seeing today. I suspect the same is happening on the war front as well. Follow the money. We are witnessing war crimes in real time.
