This video shows how you can give feral cats a safe space to raise their young. While the kittens can be socialized and adopted, a feral adult cat cannot be socialized and does not want to be indoors. The safest and best place for them is outdoors - after they have been spayed and vaccinated.

    It’s funny because a few months ago I had the exact OPPOSITE problem. There’s this stray momma cat who always comes around where we live and she grew quite fond of us. For a while she had disappeared and she came back PREGNANT and decided to have her kittens there. The mom is really friendly, so much so that she would even try to call her babies to come and see us. But the kittens were not having it. Finally we lured them into a kennel and took them to a place where they could get trained and used to people and hopefully adopted. She had SIX of them and I find that really funny because the mom is an extremely tiny cat lol. We later got her fixed so no more babies. Guess she’s ours now lol.

      @@GoatSimGang I get that people have mixed feelings about cats and dogs being spayed and neutered. But in reality it actually prevents the world from becoming over populated with domesticated animals without homes who will eventually end up either being on the streets or put in shelters. If we hadn’t done that she would’ve definitely kept having more and more kittens do to all the stray cats in the area. That’s not fair to her or her potential babies because the sad reality is a large majority of kittens don’t end up finding homes even when brought to facilities where they can be adopted.

    One day i woke up in the morning to a constant meowing outdoor. I went out to check and saw a cat hiding in a bush on my frontyard. It's no older than 4 months it seems. She seemed lost and was looking for someone, she was cautious but curious when i tried to approach her. My gf suggests that we feed her, i refused at first because i don't want her to get attached to me, since i've never had any cat before. But in the end, i did end up feeding her, she's so happy that i did too..
    Fast forward half a year later, and she ended up staying here and gave birth to 2 kittens. I guess im a cat owner now

    • @razorransom1795
      @razorransom1795 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      There's definitely a Manx Gene or a Japanese bobtail Gene in there. Though my bet is manx since the other two kittens have full tails, the runt had a stumpy tailed. My mom saved a Manx boy who had kittens to my brothers Turkish Algora, and some of the kittens had similar tails so I researched the Manx breed facts. My little ones are two of the kittens, one who looks like her aunt did and the other is looks like a cat in tux with his rumpy riser tail, my Cutie's.

    • @razorransom1795
      @razorransom1795 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@quinn_catt Possible, however, how the fur lays on the stump points to it being natural. It reminds me of my FLuffy, who's tail is rumpy riser form. It doesn't look like an accidental cut off, it looks like it's been that way since birth. It's possible since Manx cats can be born as no tail, riser, rumpy riser, stubs or full tails. His siblings had three full tails, him was rumpy riser and his bro had a stumpy like their father. We gave away a few, but all are in good health. So it's possible to have a majority of tailed, and a few with the actual Manx Gene. Those kittens didn't look too old and didn't go far and looked well protected by that shed. They also looked really good so it has to be Gene wise.

    A feral mama cat had 3 kittens in a secluded backyard space at my home. It was a junky area behind a gate. A splendid wonderland for the kittens. We left mom with her kittens up to a point where we brought the kittens in to be tamed before spaying. I continued working with the mom giving her wet meal rewards for coming close to me to eat in a quiet place in the yard. Through patience, everyone was spayed, given their shots, and comfortable with our presence. Mama cat has discovered we have cozy laps and seeks us out for cuddling time with lots of petting and chin scratches. The kittens are very tame as well. Emphasis on patience, folks. Early on, I would daily spend some time on a comfortable seat in the junkiest part of our yard just so that everyone was used to my presence. I set up mom with a pleasant layer of towels for a nursing area and the kittens were corralled with sandbags butted up against our shed so they could safely play contentedly or run for cover under the shed when scared. Mom always had dry food on hand with fresh water.
    I’m glad I took the extra time to tame the mom because she is a wonderful addition to our household. She sleeps outdoors in a warm little bed on the covered porch with one of her grown kittens that we kept. The coastal California weather has been very helpful in our taming endeavors and the cats find it fun to come in and sit with me on the couch for evening TV or reading time when we’re home in the winter months. Getting the cats acclimated to coming indoors has also helped on noisy nights around the 4th of July when we want everyone indoors.
    I decided to fix up the junky area in the yard where the kittens were born. All the junk has been tossed or relocated. Now there are lots of flowers and a teeny lawn. I have a big umbrella and a cozy chair there to enjoy the view. Mom has decided that chair is a great place for napping and we can find her there on any warm day. 💜

      How can you just assume that you think you know what the cat wants, because your cat likes being indoors? Feral cats hate being restricted to indoors only, actually a lot of cats hate it. There are studies showing higher incidence of behavioural problems among indoor only cats. And you think you know how a cat feels based on a minute of footage of it playing with its children. You're such an expert that not only do you know it wants to be inside, but you're able to understand the exact feelings of the cat? Please, give me a break.

    I did learn from your video about taming feral kittens, that was great, I was doing it wrong by making physical contact before they were ready. Spent time playing with the 4 feral kittens I have with their feral momma and it went great! They are 10-12 weeks old now.
    I have 5 others that are about 7 weeks, they and their mom aren’t very feral, tho.

    It's crazy how different cats can be. One day a feral cat approached my grandpa and kept meowing at him while he was doing yardwork until he followed her behind the garage. What happened was she had given birth to a litter of 4 kitten in barrel, but it was raining and said barrel was slowly filling with water and the mama cat was smart enough to know she needed help with the kitties. They were all taken in and given this kind of treatment, but the mama cat absolutely loves my grandpa because I guess she knows what happened and was grateful her kitties are safe. She's super affectionate with everybody now, years after and hates being outside now.

      It's because mama's a calico! Basically at a certain point when she was developing, her cells had to decide if they were going to use the X genes they got from mom or the X genes they got from dad. If I remember right, she can pass on either of those copies to her kittens, so the females are often more calicos and the males end up looking like their non-calico grandparents.
      Veritasium did a vid that explains it much better than I am. I think it's called "why women are stripey" if you're interested.

We've seen the kittens all grow into cats and it begins all over again. Frankly we are a little tired of those cats using our flower beds as litter boxes and the males spraying around our house.

    Kinda amazed how many people don't understand the concept of wildness, and think you're somehow forcing the mother to be separated from her kittens. I blame the education system.
    PROTIP: Nobody wants to adopt a fully-grown feral cat, and if they do, then they shouldn't. Ferals hate being indoors, and they're terrified of people. They yearn to be back on the streets where they were born and raised, and where they feel comfortable. This is not a temporary state you can win-over with a show of devotion and lots of treats: you're essentially taming a wild animal taken from it's natural environment. Prior to trap-neuter/spay-release these cats were usually euthanized immediately on capture, and in many places they still are. Thankfully in most places now we have the funding and volunteer expertise to treat them humanely and ensure they don't reproduce before letting them go free.
    Once a mother cat has weaned her kittens she basically stops paying attention to them anyway in the wild, and they will often wander off on their own. She does not mourn their loss, as she is a cat, not a human, and once sterilized she is actually given a new lease on life by not being constantly driven by massive periodic hormone swings in between pregnancies. The benefit to male cats is equally profound (plus they have a lower cancer risk).

She is very sweet and not aggressive for being a stray. She was very kind and trusted me to bring her and her kittens up to my unit.
    They are now chilling in my living room in a makeshift cardboard bed. A tupperware of tuna next to her and a bowl of water on the other side. I'm not sure what to do with her, but I think I'm gonna keep them safe and sheltered until the kittens are alright. Any tips would be great.

      Hi! I work cat rescue! If mom is friendly that’s awesome-kittens will generally start eating wet food around 5 weeks but will still nurse until 8 weeks which is when kittens can be weaned! I’d recommend reaching out to local rescues to help cover vetting of the kittens and momma (at the very least getting them spayed/neutered). Another tip: pellet cat litter (specifically yesterday’s news) won’t produce dust, and is excellent for kittens because it’ll prevent upper respiratory infections, which kittens are prone to!

No one acts the same in all contexts and conditions.
      People act in the same way, that if you have someone who is emotionally out of control, they can do something that they wouldn't normally do, either. Because people are animals, too.
      And most times, when a cat bites you under normal conditions, they don't break skin, etc. It's just a way to communicate to you to stop what you are doing. Only if you keep ignoring what they try to communicate, they will escalate it to get you to stop. If you ignore the body language of animals, their vocalizations, etc., and get scratched or bitten, it is your fault for not paying attention.

      I've done TNR rescues -- we always look very carefully for every possible kitten. They usually stay close together until around five weeks old, so the chance of one wandering off more than a few feet is slim.

      They would probably die. It would actually help if one or two died, but since we are humans and we came to an agreement over killing them or letting them live, we choose to spay/neuter them so they cannot make more. It is sad though, to think of that poor little kitten dying.

    It's always a little sad to watch the mom and babies part, but you can tell with how she acted from the beginning, seemingly very protective, and the end where she was fine with others around that she knew it was time to leave them to grow up.
    I hope both the babies and the mother live great lives, good on you for spaying her too, so many people either dont have the money or aren't educated and you end up with kittens in some pretty dangerous environments. Domesticated animals are not the same as wild ones.

    I got so emotional when you said "She's actually happier outside. This is her home." I adopted a stray cat last year who was so sweet and well-behaved. As much as I wanna keep him indoors, I freed him because I realized he was actually happier outside. I'm just happy that after a day of playing and doing its thing outside, he comes home and wanted snuggles and cuddles and FOOD ahahaha! I love that cat, sadly he passed away a few days ago due to old age and complications. He was my first ever pet. I was always scared of animals but he came to me at the most random time to make me feel that animals are not all scary. They are capable of loving you and healing you and protecting you. Now I wanna cry 😭

      Theres a chance it died because it was outside, indoor cats mostly love longer than outdoors, true that they are happier outside, that doesnt mean they can't be happy indoors, srry if this sounds hurtful but a very close person to me saved a cat snd made it indoors perfectly fine but put it for adoption cuz she had more pets and a mutual friend of ours adopted it, we thought "how lucky we are" it was far from the truth, the former friend of us Let ot roam free cuz he thought it was ok and the cay needed it, the cat got ranover by s truckbbut it doesnt died instantly, it hide in a place where t wasnt reachable and only its meowing was hard and it meowed with pain and died slowly, the person that saved tje cat was devastated when she knew and also got angry and stopped being friends with that irresponsable owner, i did the same because i dont understand that logic. Many people that rescue cats they dont do it so the cats end uo living in the streets Again, dying sooner than they have to. When you do that to an adopted cat you are saying " fuck u" to the person that saved and took care/domesticated the cat/kitten (if strays or ferals) and you are sending the effort and Money that person spended on the cat to the toilet(specially if it dies outside the first few days it got adopted) people that rescue this cats so they can be adopted, do it so the cat can be safe and happy, not necessarily so t can be 70% happy, 30% safer. I hope your next cat is indoor and truly safe, i don't tell you this for your own good but for the sake of your next cat, and so that the effort of the person that saved it doesnt go to waste.

      @dewhuahua 3 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      @Amber Genteman yep that cat was most likely killed, next time givr it to a shelter or person but dont mle it outdoors unless you live in a farm, otherwise, people like to think their cats abandon them but the realityis they ar either dead or got captured by a cat rescuer that thought it was a stray, or got captured to be sold.

      Treasure the memories. Most cats that have been outside for awhile prefer to go back out. It doesn't mean that he/she won't enjoy being inside with their human, it just means they like the outside adventure and exploring because of their natural curiosity.

    • @dewhuahua

      @@gregGould cat lovers should realize this, a cat doesnt effingies if you make it indoors as long as you treat it well and people can walk them from time to time or travel with those Crystaline backpacks to take your cat with you inside there, some cat lovers are so effing dumb, they dont wann figure out how to keeo teir cats indoors when its easy or you can google it too, they want lame as excuses to let them roam free

    It's seriously frustrating to see people in these comments not acknowledge the damage that Feral/outdoor cats do to the local ecosystem. Don't get me wrong cats are awesome. But they are also an invasive species that decimate the local bird populations. Ideally there would be no feral/outside cats. But but this is the world we live in. I, personally, don't give a s*** if the feral cats don't want to come inside. They're coming inside. Even if that's just for their neutering and vaccinations because so help me the last thing we need is to do more damage than we've already done to both the environment and the cats/cat populations themselves.
